    Characterization of UAV-based Wireless Channels With Diverse Antenna Configurations

    In the next wave of swarm-based applications, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) need to communicate with peer drones in any direction of a three-dimensional (3D) space. On a given drone and across drones, various antenna positions and orientations are possible. We know that, in free space, high levels of signal loss are expected if the transmitting and receiving antennas are cross polarized. However, increasing the reflective and scattering objects in the channel between a transmitter and receiver can cause the received polarization to become completely independent from the transmitted polarization, making the cross-polarization of antennas insignificant. Usually, these effects are studied in the context of cellular and terrestrial networks and have not been analyzed when those objects are the actual bodies of the communicating drones that can take different relative directions or move at various elevations. In this work, we show that the body of the drone can affect the received power across various antenna orientations and positions and act as a local scatterer that increases channel depolarization, reducing the cross-polarization discrimination (XPD). In addition to communicating with other UAVs in a swarm, UAVs can also serve users on the ground. For example, at ultra-low altitudes, an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) can act as a personal base station where it communicates only with one or two users on the ground. The communication device used by a user can be in their pocket, held by hand, or attached to their bodies. In these scenarios, the wireless channel can go through different fading levels, depending on the UAV’s location, user orientation, the location of the UE near the user’s body, and the frequency of the transmitted signal. The extent to which these factors can affect Air-to-Ground channels at ultra-low altitudes is studied in this work. We answer questions regarding how the human body and different use-cases of holding a communication device on the ground can affect the quality of the wireless channel and the optimal UAV hovering location. Furthermore, we demonstrate how the observed effects can be leveraged to our advantage and increase the physical layer security of UAV-assisted networks relying on the human-induced effects. Finally, in situations where a UAV swarm needs to communicate with a target that is far or surrounded by undesired receivers, beamforming can be an attractive solution. With beamforming, the transmitted signal becomes shaped towards a certain direction confining its spatial signature and increasing the received signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR) at the receiver. However, phase synchronization across the swarm is difficult to achieve and there will always exist some degree of phase incoherency across the transmitted signals from the distributed UAVs. Phase differences between the distributed nodes would result in signals arriving at different times and their phases might not align with each other resulting in reductions in beamforming gain. Hence, a method to increase phase coherency at the receiver with limited channel overhead is desired. To this end, we propose a UAV rotation-based method through which the UAV, relying on its heterogeneous body structure, can alter the phase of the incoming signals and increase the beamformed signal level

    Empirical Models of 3D Air-to-Air Communication Channels

    Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) often lack the size, weight, and power to support large antenna arrays or a large number of radio chains. Despite such limitations, emerging applications that require the use of swarms, where UAVs form a pattern and coordinate towards a common goal, must have the capability to transmit in any direction in three-dimensional (3D) space from moment to moment. In this work, we design a measurement study to evaluate the role of antenna polarization diversity on UAV systems communicating in arbitrary 3D space. To do so, we construct flight patterns where one transmitting UAV is hovering at a high altitude (80 m) and a receiving UAV hovers at 114 different positions that span 3D space at a radial distance of approximately 20 m along equally-spaced elevation and azimuth angles. To understand the role of diverse antenna polarizations, both UAVs have a horizontally-mounted antenna and a vertically-mounted antenna---each attached to a dedicated radio chain---creating four wireless channels. Using the data from this channel-sounding experiment we are able to estimate the air-to-air (A2A) channel and build a model of the channel for arbitrary azimuth and elevation angles. We use this model to analyze the effect antenna orientation and UAV relative position have on channel magnitude. First, we quantify the different ways in which the UAV body can alter the radiation pattern of a dipole antenna depending on whether the antenna is perpendicular or parallel to the body of the UAV. Then, we analyze the effect the change in the radiation pattern has on the cross-polarization discrimination (XPD). Finally, we calculate the overlapping index, a distance measure, between the distribution of channel magnitude in two symmetric regions of 3D space and observe that the two distributions are further apart when the receiver (Rx) is below the transmitter (Tx), suggesting an asymmetry in the way the Tx and Rx UAV body affect the channel. To demonstrate the impact these effects could have on communication systems, we compute the average throughput at each location based on the channel estimates, show how to optimally select an antenna orientation, and quantify the gains in such selections

    A Survey of Air-to-Ground Propagation Channel Modeling for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles

    In recent years, there has been a dramatic increase in the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), particularly for small UAVs, due to their affordable prices, ease of availability, and ease of operability. Existing and future applications of UAVs include remote surveillance and monitoring, relief operations, package delivery, and communication backhaul infrastructure. Additionally, UAVs are envisioned as an important component of 5G wireless technology and beyond. The unique application scenarios for UAVs necessitate accurate air-to-ground (AG) propagation channel models for designing and evaluating UAV communication links for control/non-payload as well as payload data transmissions. These AG propagation models have not been investigated in detail when compared to terrestrial propagation models. In this paper, a comprehensive survey is provided on available AG channel measurement campaigns, large and small scale fading channel models, their limitations, and future research directions for UAV communication scenarios

    Application of systems engineering to complex systems and system of systems

    2017 Spring.Includes bibliographical references.This dissertation is an investigation of system of systems (SoS). It begins with an analysis to define, with some rigor, the similarities and differences between complex systems and SoS. With this foundation, the baseline concept is development for several different types of systems and they are used as a practical approach to compare and contrast complex systems versus SoS. The method is to use a progression from simple to more complex systems. Specifically, a pico hydro electric power generation system, a hybrid renewable electric power generation system, a LEO satellites system, and Molniya orbit satellite system are investigated. In each of these examples, systems engineering methods are applied for the development of a baseline solution. While these examples are complex, they do not rise to the level of a SoS. In contrast, a multi-spectral drone detection system for protection of airports is investigated and a baseline concept for it is generated. The baseline is shown to meet the minimum requirements to be considered a SoS. The system combines multiple sensor types to distinguish drones as targets. The characteristics of the drone detection system which make it a SoS are discussed. Since emergence is considered by some to be a characteristic of a SoS, it is investigated. A solution to the problem of determining if system properties are emergent is presented and necessary and sufficient conditions for emergence are developed. Finally, this work concludes with a summary and suggestions for additional work

    FLAMINGO – Fulfilling enhanced location accuracy in the mass-market through initial GalileO services

    This paper discusses FLAMINGO, an initiative that will provide a high accuracy positioning service to be used by mass market applications. The status and future for the initiative are discussed, the required accuracies and other location parameters are described, and the target applications are identified. Finally, the currently achieved accuracies from today’s Smartphones are assessed and presented. FLAMINGO (Fulfilling enhanced Location Accuracy in the Mass-market through Initial GalileO services), part funded through the European GNSS Agency, is a collaborative venture comprising NSL (as lead organization), Telespazio France, University of Nottingham, Rokubun, Thales Alenia Space France, VVA, BQ, ECLEXYS and Blue Dot Solutions. The initiative is developing the infrastructure, solutions and services to enable the use of accurate and precise GNSS within the mass-market, thereby operating predominantly in an urban environment. Whilst mass-market receivers are yet to achieve accuracies below one metre for standard positioning, the introduction of Android raw GNSS measurements and the Broadcom dual frequency chipset (BCM47755), has presented the devices such an opportunity. FLAMINGO will enable and demonstrate the future of high accuracy positioning and navigation information on mass-market devices such as smartphones and Internet of Things (IoT) devices by producing a service delivering accuracies of 50cm (at 95%) and better, employing multi-constellation, PPP and RTK mechanisms, power consumption optimisation techniques. Whereas the Galileo High Accuracy Service targets 10cm precision within professional markets, FLAMINGO targets 30-50cm precision in the mass-market consumer markets. By targeting accuracies of a few decimetres, a range of improved and new applications in diverse market sectors are introduced. These sectors include, but are not limited to, mapping and GIS, autonomous vehicles, AR environments, mobile-location based gaming and people tracking. To obtain such high accuracies with mass market devices, FLAMINGO must overcome several challenges which are technical, operational and environmental. This includes the hardware capabilities of most mass-market devices, where components such as antennas and processors are prioritised for other purposes. We demonstrate that, despite these challenges, FLAMINGO has the potential to meet the accuracy required. Tests with the current Smartphones that provide access to multi-constellation raw measurements (the dual frequency Xiaomi Mi 8 and single frequency Samsung S8 and Huawei P10) demonstrate significant improvements to the PVT solution when processing using both RTK and PPP techniques

    Calibration Instrumentation for the Hydrogen Intensity and Real-Time Analysis eXperiment

    The Hydrogen Intensity and Real-time Analysis eXperiment (HIRAX) is a 21 cm neutral hydrogen intensity mapping experiment to be deployed in the Karoo Desert in South Africa. It aims to improve constraints on the dark energy equation of state through measurements of large-scale structure at high redshift, while doubling as a state-of-the-art fast radio burst (FRB) detector. This dissertation focuses on two aspects of the HIRAX instrument characterization: (1) optimizing the signal-to-noise of antennas, through the design and implementation of a custom test-bed for determining the noise temperature of radio antennas operating between 400-800MHz, and (2) mapping the HIRAX telescope beam pattern with a custom drone calibration system. The work described is critical to HIRAX\u27s development, both by informing final antenna design and providing the tools to generate beam maps that will factor into all cosmological analysis

    Evaluation of mmWave 5G Performance by Advanced Ray Tracing Techniques

    Technological progress leads to the emergence of new concepts, which can change people’s everyday lives and accelerate the transformation of many industries. Among the more recent of these revolutionary concepts are big data analysis, artificial intelligence, augmented/virtual reality, quantum computing, and autonomous vehicles. However, this list would be incomplete without referring to fifth-generation (5G) technology, which is driven by several trends. First, the exponential growth of the worldwide monthly smartphone traffic up to 50 petabytes during the next three years will require the development of mobile networks supporting high datasharing capabilities, excellent spectral efficiency, and gigabits per second of throughput. Another trend is Industry 4.0/5.0 (also called the smart factory), which refers to advanced levels of automation requiring millions of distributed sensors/devices connected into a scalable and smart network. Finally, the automation of critical industrial processes, as well as communication between autonomous vehicles, will require 99.999% reliability and under 1 ms latency as they also become the drivers for the emergence of 5G. Besides traditional sub-6 GHz microwave spectrum, the 5G communication encompasses the novel millimeter-wave bands to mitigate spectrum scarcity and provide large bandwidth of up to several GHz. However, there are challenges to be overcome with the millimeter-wave band. The band suffers from higher pathloss, more atmospheric attenuation, and higher diffraction losses than microwave signals. Because the millimeter-wave band has such a small wavelength (< 1 cm), it is now feasible to implement compact antenna arrays. This enables the use of beamforming and multi-input and multi-output techniques. In this thesis, advanced ray tracing methodology is developed and utilized to simulate the propagation mechanisms and their effect on the system-level metrics. The main novelty of this work is in the introduction of typical millimeter-wave 5G technologies into channel modelling and propagation specifics into the system-level simulation, as well as the adaptation of the ray tracing methods to support extensive simulations with multiple antennas

    1-D broadside-radiating leaky-wave antenna based on a numerically synthesized impedance surface

    A newly-developed deterministic numerical technique for the automated design of metasurface antennas is applied here for the first time to the design of a 1-D printed Leaky-Wave Antenna (LWA) for broadside radiation. The surface impedance synthesis process does not require any a priori knowledge on the impedance pattern, and starts from a mask constraint on the desired far-field and practical bounds on the unit cell impedance values. The designed reactance surface for broadside radiation exhibits a non conventional patterning; this highlights the merit of using an automated design process for a design well known to be challenging for analytical methods. The antenna is physically implemented with an array of metal strips with varying gap widths and simulation results show very good agreement with the predicted performance
