On-line transformer condition monitoring through diagnostics and anomaly detection

    Get PDF
This paper describes the end-to-end components of an on-line system for diagnostics and anomaly detection. The system provides condition monitoring capabilities for two in- service transmission transformers in the UK. These transformers are nearing the end of their design life, and it is hoped that intensive monitoring will enable them to stay in service for longer. The paper discusses the requirements on a system for interpreting data from the sensors installed on site, as well as describing the operation of specific diagnostic and anomaly detection techniques employed. The system is deployed on a substation computer, collecting and interpreting site data on-line

Informative frequency band identification method using bi-frequency map clustering for fault detection in rotating machines

In presented work the problem of local damage detection in rolling element bearings is addressed. Usually such issues require the usage of the techniques of decomposition, separation etc. In such real industrial cases main difficulty lies in relatively low signal-to-noise ratio as well as unpredictable distribution of damage-related information in the frequency domain, hence the typical methods cannot be used. In this paper such industrial scenario is addressed and a simple yet effective approach to underlying component extraction will be discussed. Proposed method analyzes Cyclic Spectral Coherence map as starting data representation, and Expectation-Maximization is used as analytical tool to determine the informative frequency band (IFB) for impulsive component localization in the carrier frequency spectrum. Finally, based on identified IFB, the bandpass filter is constructed to extract the impulsive component from the input signal

Learning models of plant behavior for anomaly detection and condition monitoring

Providing engineers and asset managers with a too] which can diagnose faults within transformers can greatly assist decision making on such issues as maintenance, performance and safety. However, the onus has always been on personnel to accurately decide how serious a problem is and how urgently maintenance is required. In dealing with the large volumes of data involved, it is possible that faults may not be noticed until serious damage has occurred. This paper proposes the integration of a newly developed anomaly detection technique with an existing diagnosis system. By learning a Hidden Markov Model of healthy transformer behavior, unexpected operation, such as when a fault develops, can be flagged for attention. Faults can then be diagnosed using the existing system and maintenance scheduled as required, all at a much earlier stage than would previously have been possible

    Does query-based diagnostics work?

Query-based diagnostics (Agosta, Gardos, & Druzdzel, 2008) offers passive, incremental construction of diagnostic models that rest on the interaction between a diagnostician and a computer-based diagnostic system. Effectively, this approach minimizes knowledge engineering, the main bottleneck in practical application of Bayesian networks. While this idea is appealing, it has undergone only limited testing in practice. We describe a series of experiments that subject a prototype implementing passive, incremental model construction to a rigorous practical test. We show that the prototype's diagnostic accuracy reaches reasonable levels after merely tens of cases and continues to increase with the number of cases, comparing favorably to state of the art approaches based on learning
