    How does the Universe expand?

Quantization of gravity suggests that a finite region of space has a finite number of degrees of freedom or `bits'. What happens to these bits when spacetime expands, as in cosmological evolution? Using gravity/field theory duality we argue that bits `fuse together' when space expands.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, harvmac (This essay received an "honorable mention" in the 2003 Essay Competition of the Gravity Research Foundation.

Why Does the Universe Expand ?

The purpose of the paper is five-fold: (a) Argue that the question in the title can be presented in a meaningful manner and that it requires an answer. (b) Discuss the conventional answers and explain why they are unsatisfactory. (c) Suggest that a key ingredient in the answer could be the instability arising due to the `wrong' sign in the Hilbert action for the kinetic energy term corresponding to expansion factor. (d) Describe how this idea connects up with another peculiar feature of our universe, viz. it spontaneously became more and more classical in the course of evolution. (e) Provide a speculative but plausible scenario, based on the thermodynamic perspective of gravity, in which one has the hope for relating the thermodynamic and cosmological arrows of time.Comment: revtex; 5 pages; no figure

In an expanding universe, what doesn't expand?

The expansion of the universe is often viewed as a uniform stretching of space that would affect compact objects, atoms and stars, as well as the separation of galaxies. One usually hears that bound systems do not take part in the general expansion, but a much more subtle question is whether bound systems expand partially. In this paper, a very definitive answer is given for a very simple system: a classical "atom" bound by electrical attraction. With a mathemical description appropriate for undergraduate physics majors, we show that this bound system either completely follows the cosmological expansion, or -- after initial transients -- completely ignores it. This "all or nothing" behavior can be understood with techniques of junior-level mechanics. Lastly, the simple description is shown to be a justifiable approximation of the relativistically correct formulation of the problem.Comment: 8 pages, 9 eps figure

Expand an existing on-site garden to provide fresh seasonal produce on demand

Studies have shown that school gardens can increase interest in and preference for eating fruits and vegetables among students. That's important to the overall goals preventing and reducing food waste in school food service operations because fruits and vegetables comprise a large portion of food wasted. School gardens also provide opportunities for experiential learning and host of other benefits including increased respect for nature, increased science achievement scores, and improved social skills and behavior. If you are purchasing local and/or organic produce for use in your operations, you may also realize cost savings by growing some of that produce onsite.Funded by U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 5Ope

How to expand the Hamilton market for mutual benefit

The main business of Mument, is to sell maternal and infant products. It is a one- stop store, where customers can find baby and children’s items from new-born until nearly 12 years old, Mument has a membership system, which means customer can deposit 500,thenenjoy15500, then enjoy 15% off for each single shopping time, or use a scorecard, with one point equal to 1. getting 15% off when they reach 300 points.. The aims of the research were to improve sales and selling skills, and to develop better marketing methods. The questions for Mument are how to gain better sales and select effective marketing methods. For this research, I have selected quantitative methods, and use a questionnaire to get the primary research results. 18% of customers find a long wait for their order unacceptable, 30% of customers think Mument sales-people lack professional information, and find having only one sales-person in the store at weekends insufficient. 64% customers know about mother and baby product information through friends, and 58% customers know about Mument from friends. Most member’s babies’ birthdays are in April, May, September and October. I recommend that the owner analyse what kind of products customers require frequently, and order these before they ask, have a longer training time to allow sales-persons to acquire professional information, and have sales promotions at specific times
