    Advanced manned space flight simulation and training: An investigation of simulation host computer system concepts

    The findings of a preliminary investigation by Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) in simulation host computer concepts is presented. It is designed to aid NASA in evaluating simulation technologies for use in spaceflight training. The focus of the investigation is on the next generation of space simulation systems that will be utilized in training personnel for Space Station Freedom operations. SwRI concludes that NASA should pursue a distributed simulation host computer system architecture for the Space Station Training Facility (SSTF) rather than a centralized mainframe based arrangement. A distributed system offers many advantages and is seen by SwRI as the only architecture that will allow NASA to achieve established functional goals and operational objectives over the life of the Space Station Freedom program. Several distributed, parallel computing systems are available today that offer real-time capabilities for time critical, man-in-the-loop simulation. These systems are flexible in terms of connectivity and configurability, and are easily scaled to meet increasing demands for more computing power

    This document is a collection of selected technical papers produced by participants in the Software Engineering Laboratory (SEL) from November 1990 through October 1991. The purpose of the document is to make available, in one reference, some results of SEL research that originally appeared in a number of different forums. This is the ninth such volume of technical papers produced by the SEL. Although these papers cover several topics related to software engineering, they do not encompass the entire scope of SEL activities and interests. For the convenience of this presentation, the eight papers contained here are grouped into three major categories: (1) software models studies; (2) software measurement studies; and (3) Ada technology studies. The first category presents studies on reuse models, including a software reuse model applied to maintenance and a model for an organization to support software reuse. The second category includes experimental research methods and software measurement techniques. The third category presents object-oriented approaches using Ada and object-oriented features proposed for Ada. The SEL is actively working to understand and improve the software development process at GSFC

    A Study of Members of a Public Health Nutrition Practice Group: How Education, Training, and Experience Influence Competency in Practice

    This research was conducted to identify the self-reported continuing education needs of members of the Public Health Nutrition Practice Group of the American Dietetic Association and to determine the relationships between education, training, and experience factors and public health nutrition practice. The three categories (nutrition, public health, and social/behavioral science and education) of knowledge and skill statements identified in the public health nutrition graduate curriculum guide, Strategies for Success, were adapted for use in a survey which asked respondents to self-report the level and degree of use in the job of each knowledge/skill using a Likert-like scale. Respondents were asked also a series of demographic questions and questions concerning continuing education format. Results showed respondents needed basic continuing education programs dealing with public health competencies and more advanced programs for nutrition topics. In terms of public health nutrition practice, the factors which appeared to have the greatest influence in self-reported level and use of competencies were years experience in public health nutrition and primary position. Recommendations were made regarding qualifications for three positions in public health nutrition: administrator/manager, direct care service provider, and a combination of the two. Finally, future research needs in the field of public health nutrition were identified

    Computer science curriculum in the community college: an evaluative study

    The purpose of this study was to assess the sufficiency of the Computer Studies curriculum at Camden County College in meeting the needs of its local job market. A questionnaire was distributed to 106 computer-based businesses in southern New Jersey, northern Delaware, and the greater Philadelphia area. The purpose of the survey was twofold. it was first necessary to ascertain whether or not these businesses would hire individuals possessing an associate\u27s degree in Computer Science and if so, how many such positions might they have available in any given year. The survey then questioned respondents about the individual needs of their organization with regard to entry level positions in the areas of software design and implementation. Fifty-seven, 54 percent, of the surveys were completed and returned. The researcher also investigated several areas of rapidly changing technology which included CASE Tool Technology, Object-Oriented Programming, Client/Server Systems, Hypermedia, Database Programming, and Graphical User interface. The survey results coupled with the author\u27s literary search led to the conclusion that Camden County College should update its Computer Studies program and that faculty and administrators must be aware of the need to continually modify this curriculum as the technology evolves

    Factors Associated with Successful High School Distance Education Programs.

    The purposes of this research project were to identify the extent to which online courses are available to high school students in Tennessee, to describe the characteristics of current online programs, to identify barriers to the implementation of online courses in school systems that are not currently offering such programs, and to offer recommendations that could facilitate implementation of these programs. The research went in two directions. A study of past and current online educational programs was completed in order to learn the nature of successful programs across the country. Then, a survey was constructed and sent to appropriate technology personnel in Tennessee schools to evaluate both their current online programs and to determine those needed in the state. There are only two school systems in Tennessee that allow students to earn online credits to be used towards high school graduation. One is a larger school system and the other is a medium sized school system; both are in the eastern region of the state. One survey respondent summed it up by saying: I really think the State Department of Education should step up and provide some direction. Florida has a vanguard program; I’d like to see the same type of program implemented in Tennessee. If individual school districts are left to design their own programs, then there is going to be a lot of duplicated effort, a wide range of implementation strategies, and varying degrees of quality. That’s likely to breed confusion and disillusionment
