    Real-time control for manufacturing space shuttle main engines: Work in progress

    During the manufacture of space-based assemblies such as Space Shuttle Main Engines, flexibility is required due to the high-cost and low-volume nature of the end products. Various systems have been developed pursuing the goal of adaptive, flexible manufacturing for several space applications, including an Advanced Robotic Welding System for the manufacture of complex components of the Space Shuttle Main Engines. The Advanced Robotic Welding System (AROWS) is an on-going joint effort, funded by NASA, between NASA/Marshall Space Flight Center, and two divisions of Rockwell International: Rocketdyne and the Science Center. AROWS includes two levels of flexible control of both motion and process parameters: Off-line programming using both geometric and weld-process data bases, and real-time control incorporating multiple sensors during weld execution. Both control systems were implemented using conventional hardware and software architectures.     Event-triggered robust control for multi-player nonzero-sum games with input constraints and mismatched uncertainties

    In this article, an event-triggered robust control (ETRC) method is investigated for multi-player nonzero-sum games of continuous-time input constrained nonlinear systems with mismatched uncertainties. By constructing an auxiliary system and designing an appropriate value function, the robust control problem of input constrained nonlinear systems is transformed into an optimal regulation problem. Then, a critic neural network (NN) is adopted to approximate the value function of each player for solving the event-triggered coupled Hamilton-Jacobi equation and obtaining control laws. Based on a designed event-triggering condition, control laws are updated when events occur only. Thus, both computational burden and communication bandwidth are reduced. We prove that the weight approximation errors of critic NNs and the closed-loop uncertain multi-player system states are all uniformly ultimately bounded thanks to the Lyapunov's direct method. Finally, two examples are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the developed ETRC method

    Multiple Loop Self-Triggered Model Predictive Control for Network Scheduling and Control

    We present an algorithm for controlling and scheduling multiple linear time-invariant processes on a shared bandwidth limited communication network using adaptive sampling intervals. The controller is centralized and computes at every sampling instant not only the new control command for a process, but also decides the time interval to wait until taking the next sample. The approach relies on model predictive control ideas, where the cost function penalizes the state and control effort as well as the time interval until the next sample is taken. The latter is introduced in order to generate an adaptive sampling scheme for the overall system such that the sampling time increases as the norm of the system state goes to zero. The paper presents a method for synthesizing such a predictive controller and gives explicit sufficient conditions for when it is stabilizing. Further explicit conditions are given which guarantee conflict free transmissions on the network. It is shown that the optimization problem may be solved off-line and that the controller can be implemented as a lookup table of state feedback gains. Simulation studies which compare the proposed algorithm to periodic sampling illustrate potential performance gains.Comment: Accepted for publication in IEEE Transactions on Control Systems Technolog

    Deep Reinforcement Learning for Event-Triggered Control

    Event-triggered control (ETC) methods can achieve high-performance control with a significantly lower number of samples compared to usual, time-triggered methods. These frameworks are often based on a mathematical model of the system and specific designs of controller and event trigger. In this paper, we show how deep reinforcement learning (DRL) algorithms can be leveraged to simultaneously learn control and communication behavior from scratch, and present a DRL approach that is particularly suitable for ETC. To our knowledge, this is the first work to apply DRL to ETC. We validate the approach on multiple control tasks and compare it to model-based event-triggering frameworks. In particular, we demonstrate that it can, other than many model-based ETC designs, be straightforwardly applied to nonlinear systems
