Bit error rate analysis of different digital modulation schemes in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing systems
This study presents the design of an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system and analyses the performance of the different digital modulation techniques employed in the system. The OFDM system was modelled and different modulation schemes: M-ary phase shift keying (M-PSK) and M-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (M-QAM) were employed over two different channels: additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN), and Rayleigh multipath fading channels. Bit error rate (BER) analysis was carried out for the different digital modulation schemes over the two channels, and the number of fast Fourier transform (FFT) points used during the transmission was examined. Generally, results showed that over both AWGN and Rayleigh fading channels, lower order modulation schemes perform better than the higher order schemes. This comes at the detriment of the data rate, as lower order schemes have lower data rates compared with their higher order counterparts. In addition, it was observed that the system performed better over AWGN channel than Rayleigh fading channel for all modulation schemes used. On the number of FFT points used during the transmission, findings revealed that the performance of the system is more or less not really affected by the number of FFT points employed during transmission.Key words: Digital modulation, bit error rate, orthogonal frequency division multiplexing, additive white Gaussian noise, modulation schemes, fast Fourier transform
A resource management scheme for multi-user GFDM with adaptive modulation in frequency selective fading channels
The topic is "Low-latency communication for machine-type communication in LTE-A" and need to be specified in more detail. This final project focus on designing and evaluating a resource management scheme for a multi-user generalized frequency division multiplexing (GFDM) system, when a frequency selective fading channel and adaptive modulation is used. GFDM with adaptive subcarrier, sub-symbol and power allocation are considered. Assuming that the transmitter has a perfect knowledge of the instantaneous channel gains for all users, I propose a multi-user GFDM subcarrier, sub-symbol and power allocation algorithm to minimize the total transmit power. This work analyzes the performance of using a specific set of parameters for aligning GFDM with long term evolution (LTE) grid. The results show that the performance of the proposed algorithm using GFDM is closer to the performance of using OFDM and outperforms multiuser GFDM systems with static frequency division multiple access (FDMA) techniques which employ fixed subcarrier allocation schemes. The advantage between GFDM and OFDM is that the latency of the system can be reduced by a factor of 15 if independent demodulation is considered.

Performance evaluation of fixed WiMax physical layer under high fading channels
This thesis was submitted for the degree of Master of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel University.A radio channel characteristic modelling is essential in every network planning. This project deals with the performance of WiMax networks in an outdoor environment while using fading channel models. The radio channels characteristics are analyzed by simulations have been done using Matlab programming. Stanford University Interim(SUI) Channels set was proposed to simulate the fixed broadband wireless access channel environments where IEEE 802.16d is to be deployed. It has six channel models that are grouped into three categories according to three typical different outdoor Terrains, in order to give a comprehensive study of fading channels on the overall performance of the system, WiMax system has been tested under SUI channels that modified into account for 30o directional antennas, with 90% cell coverage and with 99.9% reliability in its geographical covered area. Furthermore, in order to combat the fading which occurs in urban areas and improve the capacity and the throughput of the system, multiples antennas at both ends of communication link are used, the transmission gain obtained when using multiple antennas instead of only a single antenna. Space-time coding and maximum ratio combining for more than one transmit and receive antenna is implemented to allow performance investigations in various MIMO scenarios. It has been concluded that uses multiple antennas at the receiver offers a significant improvement of 3 dB of gain in the channel SNR. This thesis also contain implementation of all compulsory features of the WiMax OFDM physical layer specified in IEEE 802.16-2004 using Matlab coding. In order to combat the temporal variations in quality on a multipath fading channel, an adaptive modulation technique is used. This technique employs multiple modulation schemes to instantaneously adapt to the variations in the channel SNR, thus maximizing the system throughput and improving BER performance. WiMax transceiver has been tested with and without encoding and studied the effect of encoding on multipath channel. Testing the system with flexible channel bandwidth has been part of this thesis. Finally it has been explained in this thesis the affect of increasing the size of cyclic prefix on overall performance of WiMax system
A new hybrid model of dengue incidence rate using negative binomial generalised additive model and fuzzy c-means model: a case study in Selangor
Dengue is one of the top reason for illness and mortality in the world with beyond oneÂthird of the world's population living in the risk areas of dengue infection. In this study, there are five stages to achieve the research objectives. Firstly, the verification of predetem1ined variables. Secondly, the identification of new datasets after clustered by district and Fuzzy C-Means Model (FCM). Thirdly, the development of models using the existing dataset and the new datasets which clustered by the two different clustering categories. Then, to assess the models developed by using three measurement methods which are deviance (D), Akaike Jnfonnation Criteria (AIC) and Bayesian Infonnation Criteria (BIC} Lastly, the validation of model developed by comparing the value of D, AIC and BIC between the existing model and the new models developed which used the new datasets. There are two different clustering techniques applied which are clustering the data by district and by FCM. This study proposed a new modelling hybrid framework by using two statistical models which are FCM and negative binomial Generalised Additive Model (GAM). This study successfully presents the significant difference in the climatic and non-climatic factors that influenced dengue incidence rate (DIR) in Selangor, Malaysia. Results show that the climatic factors such as rainfall with current month up to 3 months and number of rainy days with current month up to lag 3 months are significant to DIR. Besides, the interaction between rainfall and number of rainy days also shows strong positive relationship to DIR. Meanwhile, non-climatic vaiiables such as population density, number of locality and lag DIR from I month until 3 months also show significant relationship towards DIR For both clustering techniques, there are two clusters fonned and there are four new models developed in this study. After comparing the values of D, AIC ai1d BIC between the existing model and the new models, this study concluded that four new models recorded lower values compared to the existing model. Therefore, the four new models are selected to present the dengue incidence in Selangor
Secure OFDM System Design for Wireless Communications
Wireless communications is widely employed in modern society and plays an increasingly important role in people\u27s daily life. The broadcast nature of radio propagation, however, causes wireless communications particularly vulnerable to malicious attacks, and leads to critical challenges in securing the wireless transmission. Motivated by the insufficiency of traditional approaches to secure wireless communications, physical layer security that is emerging as a complement to the traditional upper-layer security mechanisms is investigated in this dissertation. Five novel techniques toward the physical layer security of wireless communications are proposed. The first two techniques focus on the security risk assessment in wireless networks to enable a situation-awareness based transmission protection. The third and fourth techniques utilize wireless medium characteristics to enhance the built-in security of wireless communication systems, so as to prevent passive eavesdropping. The last technique provides an embedded confidential signaling link for secure transmitter-receiver interaction in OFDM systems
Performance Analysis of Adaptive Filter Channel Estimated MIMO OFDM Communication System
Advanced Communication Systems are wideband systems to support multiple applications such as audio, video and data so and so forth. These systems require high spectral efficiency and data rates. In addition, they should provide multipath fading and inter-symbol interference (ISI) free transmission. Multiple input multiple output orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (MIMO OFDM) meets these requirements Hence, MIMO-OFDM is the most preferable technique for long term evaluation advanced (LTE-A). The primary objective of this paper is to control bit error rate (BER) by proper channel coding, pilot carriers, adaptive filter channel estimation schemes and space time coding (STC). A combination of any of these schemes results in better BER performance over individual schemes. System performance is analyzed for various digital modulation schemes. In this paper, adaptive filter channel estimated MIMO OFDM system is proposed by integrating channel coding, adaptivefilter channel estimation, digital modulation and space time coding. From the simulation results, channel estimated 2×2 MIMO OFDM system shows superior performance over individual schemes
