    ERP implementation methodologies and frameworks: a literature review

    Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) implementation is a complex and vibrant process, one that involves a combination of technological and organizational interactions. Often an ERP implementation project is the single largest IT project that an organization has ever launched and requires a mutual fit of system and organization. Also the concept of an ERP implementation supporting business processes across many different departments is not a generic, rigid and uniform concept and depends on variety of factors. As a result, the issues addressing the ERP implementation process have been one of the major concerns in industry. Therefore ERP implementation receives attention from practitioners and scholars and both, business as well as academic literature is abundant and not always very conclusive or coherent. However, research on ERP systems so far has been mainly focused on diffusion, use and impact issues. Less attention has been given to the methods used during the configuration and the implementation of ERP systems, even though they are commonly used in practice, they still remain largely unexplored and undocumented in Information Systems research. So, the academic relevance of this research is the contribution to the existing body of scientific knowledge. An annotated brief literature review is done in order to evaluate the current state of the existing academic literature. The purpose is to present a systematic overview of relevant ERP implementation methodologies and frameworks as a desire for achieving a better taxonomy of ERP implementation methodologies. This paper is useful to researchers who are interested in ERP implementation methodologies and frameworks. Results will serve as an input for a classification of the existing ERP implementation methodologies and frameworks. Also, this paper aims also at the professional ERP community involved in the process of ERP implementation by promoting a better understanding of ERP implementation methodologies and frameworks, its variety and history

    A formal ontology for industrial maintenance

    International audienceThe rapid advancement of information and communication technologies has resulted in a variety of maintenance support systems and tools covering all sub-domains of maintenance. Most of these systems are based on different models that are sometimes redundant or incoherent and always heterogeneous. This problem has lead to the development of maintenance platforms integrating all of these support systems. The main problem confronted by these integration platforms is to provide semantic interoperability between different applications within the same environment. In this aim, we have developed an ontology for the field of industrial maintenance, adopting the METHONTOLOGY approach to manage the life cycle development of this ontology, that we have called IMAMO (Industrial MAintenance Management Ontology). This ontology can be used not only to ensure semantic interoperability but also to generate new knowledge that supports decision making in the maintenance process. This paper provides and discusses some tests so as to evaluate the ontology and to show how it can ensure semantic interoperability and generate new knowledge within the platform

    Service-Oriented Process Models in Telecommunication Business

    The thesis concentrates on to evaluate challenges in the business process management and the need for Service-oriented process models in telecommunication business to alleviate the integration work efforts and to reduce total costs of ownership. The business aspect concentrates on operations and business support systems which are tailored for communication service providers. Business processes should be designed in conformance with TeleManagement Forum's integrated business architecture framework. The thesis rationalizes the need to transform organizations and their way of working from vertical silos to horizontal layers and to understand transformational efforts which are needed to adopt a new strategy. Furthermore, the thesis introduces service characterizations and goes deeper into technical requirements that a service compliant middleware system needs to support. At the end of the thesis Nokia Siemens Networks proprietary approach – Process Automation Enabling Suite is introduced, and finally the thesis performs two case studies. The first one is Nokia Siemens Networks proprietary survey which highlights the importance of customer experience management and the second one is an overall research study whose results have been derived from other public surveys covering application integration efforts

    Business Intelligence within Large Companies - Challenges and Maturity

    Purpose: The purpose of the thesis is to create a Business Intelligence maturity model based on eight examined operational BI propositions. Furthermore it is to explore the recognition level and business impact of these propositions. Methodology: The work process consisted of an initial explorative phase where a theoretical framework was created based on literature research. Founding on that the maturity model was developed, and then further tested in a survey. The survey also examined the recognition level of the propositions. To explore the business impact of the propositions three in depth interviews were held. Conclusion: The main conclusions in the project are that the eight examined propositions are common challenges among large Scandinavian companies. The developed maturity model covers these challenges and can be used by organizations to see where they are at in their maturity curve and what the next step in the maturity process is. The higher the BI maturity is, the less recognized the propositions are. The recognition level of propositions and the BI maturity impact the business success, and the BI maturity among large Scandinavian companies is somewhat moderate. Other conclusions are that a well functioning BI environment is essential for any large organization since it enables the achieving of strategic goals such as efficient and effective processes. However, efficientBI-­processes and a functioning IT landscape can be difficult to establish, especially for large companies. There are extensive amounts of data to process, the implementation costs are high, and the needed change management resources are often overlooked

    Supporting distributed product configuration by integrating heterogeneous variability modeling approaches

    Context In industrial settings products are developed by more than one organization. Software vendors and suppliers commonly typically maintain their own product lines, which contribute to a larger (multi) product line or software ecosystem. It is unrealistic to assume that the participating organizations will agree on using a specific variability modeling technique—they will rather use different approaches and tools to manage the variability of their systems. Objective We aim to support product configuration in software ecosystems based on several variability models with different semantics that have been created using different notations. Method We present an integrative approach that provides a unified perspective to users configuring products in multi product line environments, regardless of the different modeling methods and tools used internally. We also present a technical infrastructure and a prototype implementation based on web services. Results We show the feasibility of the approach and its implementation by using it with the three most widespread types of variability modeling approaches in the product line community, i.e., feature-based, OVM-style, and decision-oriented modeling. To demonstrate the feasibility and flexibility of our approach, we present an example derived from industrial experience in enterprise resource planning. We further applied the approach to support the configuration of privacy settings in the Android ecosystem based on multiple variability models. We also evaluated the performance of different model enactment strategies used in our approach. Conclusions Tools and techniques allowing stakeholders to handle variability in a uniform manner can considerably foster the initiation and growth of software ecosystems from the perspective of software reuse and configuration.Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad TIN2012-32273Junta de Andalucía TIC-186

    Semantic discovery and reuse of business process patterns

    Patterns currently play an important role in modern information systems (IS) development and their use has mainly been restricted to the design and implementation phases of the development lifecycle. Given the increasing significance of business modelling in IS development, patterns have the potential of providing a viable solution for promoting reusability of recurrent generalized models in the very early stages of development. As a statement of research-in-progress this paper focuses on business process patterns and proposes an initial methodological framework for the discovery and reuse of business process patterns within the IS development lifecycle. The framework borrows ideas from the domain engineering literature and proposes the use of semantics to drive both the discovery of patterns as well as their reuse

This study was focused on 80 leading Libyan business organisations catering to local and international trade, manufacturing, trade, banking and hotel services.
