Summary of the Proceedings of the AquaKnow E-conference on Knowledge Management for Technical Cooperation in the Water Sector in Developing Countries

In the framework of the EC project called ¿AquaKnow¿ an e-conference was organised on knowledge management for technical cooperation in the water sector in developing countries. The e-conference was organised by DG AIDCO and DG JRC and was held in June 2008. The chairman of the conference was Dr. Jay Bhagwan, Director of the Water Use and Waste Management in the Water Research Commission in South Africa. Some 145 participants from 67 organisations active in the water sector in Africa, in Europe and in Latina America participated to this e-conference. The organisations were public, private, NGOs, research and high education institutions, etc... This e-conference was an unique event to bring together an important amount of field experiences in treating the knowledge related to the water sector in the context of technical cooperation oriented to capacity building in developing countries. The Times They are (Not?) A-Changing: Recent Trends of Knowledge Management Literature

After almost 3 decades, the literature on knowledge management (KM) has gained importance. Today, many journals and international conferences are explicitly oriented to KM research, and many others propose special issues or special tracks on KM. The increasing number of studies and publications raises the question of what direction KM research is taking. This paper aims to explore the current trends in KM research by providing an analysis of the literature. It is based on two sources of data: first, some existing reviews of the KM literature, with the goal to analyse if these studies converge towards consistent conclusions; second, the proceedings of a long-running and popular international Conference on KM (the European Conference on Knowledge Management), where a quantitative analysis was carried out to understand the main streams in this field of study. The overall picture is that of a field of study with a flourishing literature and lively debate, but that it is still struggling to define its \u201cidentity\u201d

Enterprise information portals: potential for evaluating research for knowledge management and human capital assets using social network analysis

Business Process Management Education in Academia: Status, challenges, and Recommendations

In response to the growing proliferation of Business Process Management (BPM) in industry and the demand this creates for BPM expertise, universities across the globe are at various stages of incorporating knowledge and skills in their teaching offerings. However, there are still only a handful of institutions that offer specialized education in BPM in a systematic and in-depth manner. This article is based on a global educators’ panel discussion held at the 2009 European Conference on Information Systems in Verona, Italy. The article presents the BPM programs of five universities from Australia, Europe, Africa, and North America, describing the BPM content covered, program and course structures, and challenges and lessons learned. The article also provides a comparative content analysis of BPM education programs illustrating a heterogeneous view of BPM. The examples presented demonstrate how different courses and programs can be developed to meet the educational goals of a university department, program, or school. This article contributes insights on how best to continuously sustain and reshape BPM education to ensure it remains dynamic, responsive, and sustainable in light of the evolving and ever-changing marketplace demands for BPM expertise

XML for Domain Viewpoints

Within research institutions like CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research) there are often disparate databases (different in format, type and structure) that users need to access in a domain-specific manner. Users may want to access a simple unit of information without having to understand detail of the underlying schema or they may want to access the same information from several different sources. It is neither desirable nor feasible to require users to have knowledge of these schemas. Instead it would be advantageous if a user could query these sources using his or her own domain models and abstractions of the data. This paper describes the basis of an XML (eXtended Markup Language) framework that provides this functionality and is currently being developed at CERN. The goal of the first prototype was to explore the possibilities of XML for data integration and model management. It shows how XML can be used to integrate data sources. Model for interoperability evaluation in e-government services

The aim of the research consists of identifying the essential aspects to take into consideration to guarantee the information and knowledge interoperability in e-government services.
