    Multi-Channel Two-way Time of Flight Sensor Network Ranging

    Two-way time of flight (ToF) ranging is one of the most interesting approaches for localization in wireless sensor networking since previous ToF ranging approaches using commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) devices have achieved good accuracy. The COTS-based approaches were, however, evaluated only in line-of-sight conditions. In this paper, we extend ToF ranging using multiple IEEE 802.15.4 channels. Our results demonstrate that with multiple channels we can achieve good accuracy even in non line-of-sight conditions. Furthermore, our measurements suggest that the variance between different channels serves as a good estimate of the accuracy of the measurements, which can be valuable information for applications that require localization information

    Robust Localization from Incomplete Local Information

    We consider the problem of localizing wireless devices in an ad-hoc network embedded in a d-dimensional Euclidean space. Obtaining a good estimation of where wireless devices are located is crucial in wireless network applications including environment monitoring, geographic routing and topology control. When the positions of the devices are unknown and only local distance information is given, we need to infer the positions from these local distance measurements. This problem is particularly challenging when we only have access to measurements that have limited accuracy and are incomplete. We consider the extreme case of this limitation on the available information, namely only the connectivity information is available, i.e., we only know whether a pair of nodes is within a fixed detection range of each other or not, and no information is known about how far apart they are. Further, to account for detection failures, we assume that even if a pair of devices is within the detection range, it fails to detect the presence of one another with some probability and this probability of failure depends on how far apart those devices are. Given this limited information, we investigate the performance of a centralized positioning algorithm MDS-MAP introduced by Shang et al., and a distributed positioning algorithm, introduced by Savarese et al., called HOP-TERRAIN. In particular, for a network consisting of n devices positioned randomly, we provide a bound on the resulting error for both algorithms. We show that the error is bounded, decreasing at a rate that is proportional to R/Rc, where Rc is the critical detection range when the resulting random network starts to be connected, and R is the detection range of each device.Comment: 40 pages, 13 figure

    How would GW150914 look with future GW detector networks?

    The first detected gravitational wave signal, GW150914, was produced by the coalescence of a stellar-mass binary black hole. Along with the subsequent detection of GW151226, GW170104 and the candidate event LVT151012, this gives us evidence for a population of black hole binaries with component masses in the tens of solar masses. As detector sensitivity improves, this type of source is expected to make a large contribution to the overall number of detections, but has received little attention compared to binary neutron star systems in studies of projected network performance. We simulate the observation of a system like GW150914 with different proposed network configurations, and study the precision of parameter estimates, particularly source location, orientation and masses. We find that the improvements to low frequency sensitivity that are expected with continued commissioning will improve the precision of chirp mass estimates by an order of magnitude, whereas the improvements in sky location and orientation are driven by the expanded network configuration. This demonstrates that both sensitivity and number of detectors will be important factors in the scientific potential of second generation detector networks.Comment: 18 pages, 5 figures, 2 table

    Design and realization of precise indoor localization mechanism for Wi-Fi devices

    Despite the abundant literature in the field, there is still the need to find a time-efficient, highly accurate, easy to deploy and robust localization algorithm for real use. The algorithm only involves minimal human intervention. We propose an enhanced Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) based positioning algorithm for Wi-Fi capable devices, called the Dynamic Weighted Evolution for Location Tracking (DWELT). Due to the multiple phenomena affecting the propagation of radio signals, RSSI measurements show fluctuations that hinder the utilization of straightforward positioning mechanisms from widely known propagation loss models. Instead, DWELT uses data processing of raw RSSI values and applies a weighted posterior-probabilistic evolution for quick convergence of localization and tracking. In this paper, we present the first implementation of DWELT, intended for 1D location (applicable to tunnels or corridors), and the first step towards a more generic implementation.     Practical Accuracy Limits of Radiation-Aware Magneto-Inductive 3D Localization

    The key motivation for the low-frequency magnetic localization approach is that magnetic near-fields are well predictable by a free-space model, which should enable accurate localization. Yet, limited accuracy has been reported for practical systems and it is unclear whether the inaccuracies are caused by field distortion due to nearby conductors, unconsidered radiative propagation, or measurement noise. Hence, we investigate the practical performance limits by means of a calibrated magnetoinductive system which localizes an active single-coil agent with arbitrary orientation, using 4 mW transmit power at 500 kHz. The system uses eight single-coil anchors around a 3m x 3m area in an office room. We base the location estimation on a complex baseband model which comprises both reactive and radiative propagation. The link coefficients, which serve as input data for location estimation, are measured with a multiport network analyzer while the agent is moved with a positioner device. This establishes a reliable ground truth for calibration and evaluation. The system achieves a median position error of 3.2 cm and a 90th percentile of 8.3 cm. After investigating the model error we conjecture that field distortion due to conducting building structures is the main cause of the performance bottleneck.     Gravitational Waves from Mergin Compact Binaries: How Accurately Can One Extract the Binary's Parameters from the Inspiral Waveform?

    The most promising source of gravitational waves for the planned detectors LIGO and VIRGO are merging compact binaries, i.e., neutron star/neutron star (NS/NS), neutron star/black hole (NS/BH), and black hole/black-hole (BH/BH) binaries. We investigate how accurately the distance to the source and the masses and spins of the two bodies will be measured from the gravitational wave signals by the three detector LIGO/VIRGO network using ``advanced detectors'' (those present a few years after initial operation). The combination M≡(M1M2)3/5(M1+M2)−1/5{\cal M} \equiv (M_1 M_2)^{3/5}(M_1 +M_2)^{-1/5} of the masses of the two bodies is measurable with an accuracy ≈0.1%−1%\approx 0.1\%-1\%. The reduced mass is measurable to ∼10%−15%\sim 10\%-15\% for NS/NS and NS/BH binaries, and ∼50%\sim 50\% for BH/BH binaries (assuming 10M⊙10M_\odot BH's). Measurements of the masses and spins are strongly correlated; there is a combination of μ\mu and the spin angular momenta that is measured to within ∼1%\sim 1\%. We also estimate that distance measurement accuracies will be ≤15%\le 15\% for ∼8%\sim 8\% of the detected signals, and ≤30%\le 30\% for ∼60%\sim 60\% of the signals, for the LIGO/VIRGO 3-detector network.Comment: 103 pages, 20 figures, submitted to Phys Rev D, uses revtex macros, Caltech preprint GRP-36

    Massive MIMO-based Localization and Mapping Exploiting Phase Information of Multipath Components

    In this paper, we present a robust multipath-based localization and mapping framework that exploits the phases of specular multipath components (MPCs) using a massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) array at the base station. Utilizing the phase information related to the propagation distances of the MPCs enables the possibility of localization with extraordinary accuracy even with limited bandwidth. The specular MPC parameters along with the parameters of the noise and the dense multipath component (DMC) are tracked using an extended Kalman filter (EKF), which enables to preserve the distance-related phase changes of the MPC complex amplitudes. The DMC comprises all non-resolvable MPCs, which occur due to finite measurement aperture. The estimation of the DMC parameters enhances the estimation quality of the specular MPCs and therefore also the quality of localization and mapping. The estimated MPC propagation distances are subsequently used as input to a distance-based localization and mapping algorithm. This algorithm does not need prior knowledge about the surrounding environment and base station position. The performance is demonstrated with real radio-channel measurements using an antenna array with 128 ports at the base station side and a standard cellular signal bandwidth of 40 MHz.     Space-Time diversity for NLOS mitigation in TDOA-based positioning systems

    This paper studies the potential impact of using space-Time information in the mitigation of the Non-LineOf-Sight condition in mobile subscriber's positioning systems. First of all, this work discusses the positioning problem based on measures of Time Differences Of Arrival departing from a more exact characterization of the signal statistics and including some geometrical restrictions to achieve an improved accurate. Furthermore, a novel approach that integrates signal propagation characteristics to information provided by a suitable timing estimation model based on Cramer Rao Bound for a Rayleigh-fading channel, when antenna arrays are used at the receiver and when a set ofchannel vector estimates are available, has been introduced to study the positive benefits of space-Time diversity.
