    Estimation and detection of transmission line characteristics in the copper access network

    The copper access-network operators face the challenge of developing and maintaining cost-effective digital subscriber line (DSL) services that are competitive to other broadband access technologies. The way forward is dictated by the demand of ever increasing data rates on the twisted-pair copper lines. To meet this demand, a relocation of the DSL transceivers in cabinets closer to the customers are often necessary combined with a joint expansion of the accompanying optical-fiber backhaul network. The equipment of the next generation copper network are therefore becoming more scattered and geographically distributed, which increases the requirements of automated line qualification with fault detection and localization. This scenario is addressed in the first five papers of this dissertation where the focus is on estimation and detection of transmission line characteristics in the copper access network. The developed methods apply model-based optimization with an emphasis on using low-order modeling and a priori information of the given problem. More specifically, in Paper I a low-order and causal cable model is derived based on the Hilbert transform. This model is successfully applied in three contributions of this dissertation. In Paper II, a class of low-complexity unbiased estimators for the frequency-dependent characteristic impedance is presented that uses one-port measurements only. The so obtained characteristic impedance paves the way for enhanced time domain reflectometry (a.k.a. TDR) on twisted-pair lines. In Paper III, the problem of estimating a nonhomogeneous and dispersive transmission line is investigated and a space-frequency optimization approach is developed for the DSL application. The accompanying analysis shows which parameters are of interest to estimate and further suggests the introduction of the concept capacitive length that overcomes the necessity of a priori knowledge of the physical line length. In Paper IV, two methods are developed for detection and localization of load coils present in so-called loaded lines. In Paper V, line topology identification is addressed with varying degree of a priori information. In doing so, a model-based optimization approach is employed that utilizes multi-objective evolutionary computation based on one/two-port measurements. A complement to transceiver relocation that potentially enhances the total data throughput in the copper access network is dynamic spectrum management (DSM). This promising multi-user transmission technique aims at maximizing the transmission rates, and/or minimizing the power consumption, by mitigating or cancelling the dominating crosstalk interference between twisted-pair lines in the same cable binder. Hence the spectral utilization is improved by optimizing the transmit signals in order to minimize the crosstalk interference. However, such techniques rely on accurate information of the (usually) unknown crosstalk channels. This issue is the main focus of Paper VI and VII of this dissertation in which Paper VI deals with estimation of the crosstalk channels between twisted-pair lines. More specifically, an unbiased estimator for the square-magnitude of the crosstalk channels is derived from which a practical procedure is developed that can be implemented with standardized DSL modems already installed in the copper access network. In Paper VII the impact such a non-ideal estimator has on the performance of DSM is analyzed and simulated. Finally, in Paper VIII a novel echo cancellation algorithm for DMT-based DSL modems is presented

    Demonstration of wireless backhauling over long-reach PONs

    An IEEE 802.16e-2005 (WiMAX) compliant, longreach passive optical network is demonstrated, focusing on the development of next generation optical access with transparent wireless backhauling. In addition to the extended feeder reach, a wavelength band overlay is used to enhance network scalability by maintaining passive splitting in the field and with some design modification at the optical line terminal and remote base station. Radio-over-fiber is used to minimize network installation and maintenance costs through the use of simple remote radio heads complemented by frequency division multiplexing to address individual base stations. The implementation of overlapping radio cells/sectors is also proposed to provide joint signal processing at wireless user terminals. Experimental measurements confirmed EVMs below -30 and -23 dB downstream and upstream, respectively, over fiber link lengths of up to 84.6 km. In addition, adjacent channel leakage ratio measurements demonstrated that a figure of -45 dB with 40 MHz subcarrier spacing, as specified by the standard, can be readily achieved.Peer reviewe

    Belle II Technical Design Report

    The Belle detector at the KEKB electron-positron collider has collected almost 1 billion Y(4S) events in its decade of operation. Super-KEKB, an upgrade of KEKB is under construction, to increase the luminosity by two orders of magnitude during a three-year shutdown, with an ultimate goal of 8E35 /cm^2 /s luminosity. To exploit the increased luminosity, an upgrade of the Belle detector has been proposed. A new international collaboration Belle-II, is being formed.     A robust, reliable and deployable framework for In-vehicle security

    Cyber attacks on financial and government institutions, critical infrastructure, voting systems, businesses, modern vehicles, etc., are on the rise. Fully connected autonomous vehicles are more vulnerable than ever to hacking and data theft. This is due to the fact that the protocols used for in-vehicle communication i.e. controller area network (CAN), FlexRay, local interconnect network (LIN), etc., lack basic security features such as message authentication, which makes it vulnerable to a wide range of attacks including spoofing attacks. This research presents methods to protect the vehicle against spoofing attacks. The proposed methods exploit uniqueness in the electronic control unit electronic control unit (ECU) and the physical channel between transmitting and destination nodes for linking the received packet to the source. Impurities in the digital device, physical channel, imperfections in design, material, and length of the channel contribute to the uniqueness of artifacts. I propose novel techniques for electronic control unit (ECU) identification in this research to address security vulnerabilities of the in-vehicle communication. The reliable ECU identification has the potential to prevent spoofing attacks launched over the CAN due to the inconsideration of the message authentication. In this regard, my techniques models the ECU-specific random distortion caused by the imperfections in digital-to-analog converter digital to analog converter (DAC), and semiconductor impurities in the transmitting ECU for fingerprinting. I also model the channel-specific random distortion, impurities in the physical channel, imperfections in design, material, and length of the channel are contributing factors behind physically unclonable artifacts. The lumped element model is used to characterize channel-specific distortions.     A high speed Tri-Vision system for automotive applications

    Purpose: Cameras are excellent ways of non-invasively monitoring the interior and exterior of vehicles. In particular, high speed stereovision and multivision systems are important for transport applications such as driver eye tracking or collision avoidance. This paper addresses the synchronisation problem which arises when multivision camera systems are used to capture the high speed motion common in such applications. Methods: An experimental, high-speed tri-vision camera system intended for real-time driver eye-blink and saccade measurement was designed, developed, implemented and tested using prototype, ultra-high dynamic range, automotive-grade image sensors specifically developed by E2V (formerly Atmel) Grenoble SA as part of the European FP6 project – sensation (advanced sensor development for attention stress, vigilance and sleep/wakefulness monitoring). Results : The developed system can sustain frame rates of 59.8 Hz at the full stereovision resolution of 1280 × 480 but this can reach 750 Hz when a 10 k pixel Region of Interest (ROI) is used, with a maximum global shutter speed of 1/48000 s and a shutter efficiency of 99.7%. The data can be reliably transmitted uncompressed over standard copper Camera-Link® cables over 5 metres. The synchronisation error between the left and right stereo images is less than 100 ps and this has been verified both electrically and optically. Synchronisation is automatically established at boot-up and maintained during resolution changes. A third camera in the set can be configured independently. The dynamic range of the 10bit sensors exceeds 123 dB with a spectral sensitivity extending well into the infra-red range. Conclusion: The system was subjected to a comprehensive testing protocol, which confirms that the salient requirements for the driver monitoring application are adequately met and in some respects, exceeded. The synchronisation technique presented may also benefit several other automotive stereovision applications including near and far-field obstacle detection and collision avoidance, road condition monitoring and others.Partially funded by the EU FP6 through the IST-507231 SENSATION project.peer-reviewe

    Five-Axis Machine Tool Condition Monitoring Using dSPACE Real-Time System

    This paper presents the design, development and SIMULINK implementation of the lumped parameter model of C-axis drive from GEISS five-axis CNC machine tool. The simulated results compare well with the experimental data measured from the actual machine. Also the paper describes the steps for data acquisition using ControlDesk and hardware-in-the-loop implementation of the drive models in dSPACE real-time system. The main components of the HIL system are: the drive model simulation and input – output (I/O) modules for receiving the real controller outputs. The paper explains how the experimental data obtained from the data acquisition process using dSPACE real-time system can be used for the development of machine tool diagnosis and prognosis systems that facilitate the improvement of maintenance activities
