    A study of System Interface Sets (SIS) for the host, target and integration environments of the Space Station Program (SSP)

    System interface sets (SIS) for large, complex, non-stop, distributed systems are examined. The SIS of the Space Station Program (SSP) was selected as the focus of this study because an appropriate virtual interface specification of the SIS is believed to have the most potential to free the project from four life cycle tyrannies which are rooted in a dependance on either a proprietary or particular instance of: operating systems, data management systems, communications systems, and instruction set architectures. The static perspective of the common Ada programming support environment interface set (CAIS) and the portable common execution environment (PCEE) activities are discussed. Also, the dynamic perspective of the PCEE is addressed

    Trust management for mobile computing platforms

    Providing a trustworthy mobile computing platform is crucial for mobile communications, services and applications. In this dissertation, we study methodologies and mechanisms that can be used to provide a trustworthy mobile computing platform. We also present an autonomic trust management solution for a component software middleware platform targeting at an embedded device, such as a mobile phone. In the first part of the dissertation, we firstly overview the literature background of trust modeling and trust management. We propose research methodologies on the basis of a conceptual architecture of a trusted mobile environment. Further, we present a methodology to bridge disjoint trusted domains in mobile computing and communications into a trustworthy system. The second part of the dissertation contains a mechanism to sustain trust among computing platforms. The mechanism builds up a trust relationship based on the Root Trust (RT) module at a trustee platform and ensures trust sustainability according to pre-defined conditions. These conditions are approved at the time of trust establishment and enforced through the use of the pre-attested RT module until the intended purpose is fulfilled. Through applying this mechanism, we introduce a Trusted Collaboration Infrastructure (TCI) for peer-to-peer devices in order to establish trust collaboration among distributed peers. In addition, this mechanism contributes to a mobile Virtual Private Network (VPN) for trusted mobile enterprise networking. The third part of the dissertation presents an autonomic trust management solution that can manage trust adaptively in a middleware component software platform. We develop a formal trust model to specify, evaluate, set up and ensure trust relationships that exist among system entities. We further present a trust management architecture that supports the implementation of the above model and adopts a number of algorithms for autonomic trust management at system runtime. In particular, special control modes can be applied into the platform to ensure trustworthiness. We develop a methodology for trust control mode prediction and selection on the basis of an adaptive trust control model in order to support autonomic trust management.reviewe

    International reviews of countries’ progress at tackling climate change show that Ireland is making small levels of progress on tackling issues associated with climate change. This paper will highlight the pivotal role the State performs, both at national and local level, in creating the conditions essential for the establishment of community-owned renewable energy district heating systems. In particular, the State can provide funding for these initiatives to acquire the management and technical expertise essential for their establishment and maintenance. This paper will also examine a theoretical framework, referred to as capacity analysis, to explain the capacities that need to be in place for the successful implementation of community-owned renewable energy district heating initiatives.The theoretical framework employed here is based on the ‘conceptual framework’ developed by Middlemiss and Parrish (2010) which consists of four categories of capacity.The research methodology involves a case study with cases from Austria, Ireland, Northern Ireland, Wales, and Scotland. The research indicates that the State needs to provide a range of supports for communities to establish community-owned renewable energy district heating initiatives - including management supports and training principals in managing such initiatives. The research also points to the importance of engaging with a number of stakeholders. Managers need to value engagement with residents living in local communities and also perform a key role in ensuring community-owned renewable energy district heating initiatives become financially sustainable

    Security Strategies to Prevent Data Breaches in Infrastructure as a Service Cloud Computing

    Due to the ever-growing threat of security breaches that information technology (IT) organizations continually face, protecting customer information stored within the cloud is critical to ensuring data integrity. Research shows that new categories of data breaches constantly emerge; thus, security strategies that build trust in consumers and improve system performance are a must. The purpose of this qualitative multiple case study was to explore and analyze the strategies used by database administrators (DBAs) to secure data in a private infrastructure as a service (IaaS) cloud computing. The participants comprised of 6 DBAs from 2 IT companies in Baltimore, Maryland, with experience and knowledge of security strategies to secure data in private IaaS cloud computing. The disruptive innovation theory was the conceptual framework for this study. Data were collected using semistructured interviews and a review of 7 organizational documents. A thematic analysis was used to analyze the data. Four key themes emerged: importance of well-defined security measures in cloud computing, measures to address security controls in cloud computing, limitations of existing security controls in cloud computing, and future and potential security measures solutions in cloud computing. The findings may benefit DBAs and IT organizations by providing strategies to prevent future data breaches. Well-defined security strategies may protect an individual’s data, which in turn may promote individual well-being and build strong communities

    A Surprising Symbiosis: Examining the Mutualism in Department of Defense Conservation Partnerships

    Because of the DoD’s unique and significant role in the conservation of natural resources, military leaders and natural resource managers need a trail guide to frame interagency collaboration in a way that shapes productive partnerships. The purpose of this research was to examine successful DoD conservation partnerships in order to identify key success factors (KSFs) and the most prominent challenges faced, and how those characteristics enable the accomplishment of each partner’s objectives. The research questions were answered through a comprehensive literature review and the use of the multiple-case study method. 19 key informants from three installations participated in semi-structured interviews, and the solicitation of documentation and archival records from the same installations provided additional data. The research identified four themes of KSFs that enhance a partnership’s ability to overcome four key groups of challenges. The presence of these KSFs, and the partnership’s ability to overcome the challenges, leads to the achievement of three main categories of organizational objectives. The culmination of this effort was the development of a collaborative guide and framework to outline the key elements in the formation and maintenance of successful partnerships. Finally, recommendations to implement this framework, along with recommendations for future research, are discussed

    Randy Lia Weil made two highly unusual decisions about the 5millionshelefttobedonatedafterherdeath.Thefirstwasthatsheappointed14peoplesheknewandtrustedtoselecttheorganizationsandindividualswhowouldreceivefunding.Mostofthemwerelifelongactivistswithdecadesofpassionatededicationtoenvironmental,culturalandsocialjusticeissues.Thesecondunusualthingwasthatsheleftnoinstructionsforhowortowhomtheyshouldgiveherbequest.Shetrustedthemtodecide.Thiswouldprovetobeanadventureandadiscovery,andnotwithoutitschallengesfortheparticipants.EveryonesincerelywantedtobearesponsiblegrantmakeranddowhatRandywouldhavewanted.Butitwasacomplexjourneytoturnagroupofpassionateindividualsintoagroupofeffectivefunders.Beforetheycouldmakeanygrants,theyhadtoagreeontheirmission,vision,andvalues.TheyalsohadtodecidehowtheywouldoperateandmakedecisionsinawaythathonoredRandyandthevaluesthatledhertochoosethem.Itwasatallorder.AfterspendingayearplanningtoestablishtheFoundation,TheLiaFundawardedgrantsto107organizationsfrom2007to2013.Mostofthegrantsrangedfrom5 million she left to be donated after her death. The first was that she appointed 14 people she knew and trusted to select the organizations and individuals who would receive funding. Most of them were lifelong activists with decades of passionate dedication to environmental, cultural and social justice issues. The second unusual thing was that she left no instructions for how or to whom they should give her bequest. She trusted them to decide.This would prove to be an adventure and a discovery, and not without its challenges for the participants. Everyone sincerely wanted to be a responsible grantmaker and do what Randy would have wanted. But it was a complex journey to turn a group of passionate individuals into a group of effective funders. Before they could make any grants, they had to agree on their mission, vision, and values. They also had to decide how they would operate and make decisions in a way that honored Randy and the values that led her to choose them. It was a tall order.After spending a year planning to establish the Foundation, The Lia Fund awarded grants to 107 organizations from 2007 to 2013. Most of the grants ranged from 5,000 to 25,000.IntotaltheFoundationgaveaway25,000. In total the Foundation gave away 5 million. This is the story of what The Lia Fund did, how they did it, and what they learned. It describes the impact of this type of grantmaking on some of the most important issues of our time. It also looks at what foundations and individual donors might learn from this adventure in philanthropy
