Performance analysis of bandwidth efficient coherent modulation schemes with L-fold MRC and SC in Nakagami-m fading channels
This paper presents the average symbol error rates (SERs) of the 16-ary phase shift keying (16PSK), 16-ary amplitude phase shift keying (16APSK) and 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (16QAM) with L-fold maximal ratio combining (MRC) and selection combining (SC) space diversity receptions over Nakagami-m fading channels. Numerical results manifested error performance improvement when L-fold MRC and SC diversity receptions were employed. Error performance improvement attributed to an L=2 MRC diversity reception is comparable with that attributed to an L=4 SC diversity reception for the above three 16-ary modulation systems in a Nakagami-m fading channel with m of 5.published_or_final_versio
Performance of generalized selection combining for mobile radio communications with mixed cochannel interferers
The performance of generalized selection combining (GSC) space diversity for mobile radio systems in the presence of multiple cochannel interferers is studied. Two cochannel interference models are considered: 1) L cochannel interferers consisting of L-N Nakagami-m interferers and N Rayleigh interferers and 2) L cochannel interferers in which each interferer follows Nakagami-m distribution for a fraction of time and Rayleigh distribution for the remaining of time. The fading parameters of the Nakagami-m interferers are limited to integer values only. The desired signal is assumed to be Rayleigh faded. Also, all the desired signals and the cochannel interferers received on each branch are independent of each other. Closed-form expressions are derived for the probability density functions (pdfs) of the instantaneous signal-to-interference power ratio (SIR) at the output of the GSC for the two cochannel interference models. Using these SIR pdfs, closed-form expression for evaluating the outage probability and the average bit error probability (BEP) are subsequently derived. A differential phase-shift keying scheme is considered in the derivation. Numerical results showing the influences of various system parameters on the outage probability and the average BEP are then presented.published_or_final_versio
Diversity receiver design and channel statistic estimation in fading channels
The main goal of this thesis is to provide an in-depth study of two important techniques that are effective in improving the performance, data rate, or bandwidth-efficiency in wireless communication systems. The two techniques are, first, diversity combining equipped with quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM), and second, the estimation of fading channel statistical properties; To effectively combat the adverse effect of fading and to improve the error rate performance in wireless communications, one of the major approaches is to employ diversity combining techniques. In the first part of this thesis, we focus on the equal gain combining (EGC) and hybrid-selection equal gain combining (HS/EGC) for bandwidth-efficient wireless systems (i.e. QAM systems). For EGC QAM systems, we propose the receiver structure and the corresponding decision variables, and then study the effects of imperfect channel estimation (ICE) and quantify the loss of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) gain caused by ICE. For HS/EGC QAM system, we develop a general approach to derive unified error rate and outage probability formulas over various types of fading channels based on the proposed HS/EGC receiver. The main contribution of this work lies in that it provides effective hybrid diversity schemes and new analytical approaches to enable thorough analysis and effective design of bandwidth efficient wireless communication systems which suffer from ICE and operate in realistic multipath channels;Channel statistic information is proven to be critical in determining the systems design, achievable data rate, and achievable performance. In the second part of this thesis, we study the estimation of the fading channel Statistics and Probability; We propose several iterative algorithms to estimate the first- and second-order statistics of general fading or composite fading-shadowing channels and derive the Cramer-Rao bounds (CRBs) for all the cases. We demonstrate that these iterative methods are efficient in the sense that they achieve their corresponding CRBs. The main contribution of this work is that it bridges the gap between the broad utilization of fading channel statistical properties and the lack of systematic study that makes such statistical properties available
Ultra-Reliable Short Message Cooperative Relaying Protocols under Nakagami-m Fading
In the next few years, the development of wireless communication systems
propel the world into a fully connected society where the Machine-type
Communications (MTC) plays a substantial role as key enabler in the future
cellular systems. MTC is categorized into mMTC and uMTC, where mMTC provides
the connectivity to massive number of devices while uMTC is related to low
latency and ultra-high reliability of the wireless communications. This paper
studies uMTC with incremental relaying technique, where the source and relay
collaborate to transfer the message to a destination. In this paper, we compare
the performance of two distinct cooperative relaying protocols with the direct
transmission under the finite blocklength (FB) regime. We define the overall
outage probability in each relaying scenario, supposing Nakagami-m fading. We
show that cooperative communication outperforms direct transmission under the
FB regime. In addition, we examine the impact of fading severity and power
allocation factor on the outage probability and the minimum delay required to
meet the ultra-reliable communication requirements. Moreover, we provide the
outage probability in closed form

Performance analysis of energy detector over generalised wireless channels in cognitive radio
This thesis was submitted for the award of Doctor of Philosophy and was awarded by Brunel University London. This thesis extensively analyses the performance of an energy detector which is
widely employed to perform spectrum sensing in cognitive radio over different generalised
channel models. In this analysis, both the average probability of detection and
the average area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) are derived
using the probability density function of the received instantaneous signal to noise
ratio (SNR). The performance of energy detector over an ŋ --- µ fading, which is used
to model the Non-line-of-sight (NLoS) communication scenarios is provided. Then,
the behaviour of the energy detector over к --- µ shadowed fading channel, which is
a composite of generalized multipath/shadowing fading channel to model the lineof-
sight (LoS) communication medium is investigated. The analysis of the energy
detector over both ŋ --- µ and к --- µ shadowed fading channels are then extended to
include maximal ratio combining (MRC), square law combining (SLC) and square
law selection (SLS) with independent and non-identically (i:n:d) diversity branches.
To overcome the problem of mathematical intractability in analysing the energy
detector over i:n:d composite fading channels with MRC and selection combining
(SC), two different unified statistical properties models for the sum and the maximum
of mixture gamma (MG) variates are derived. The first model is limited by the value
of the shadowing severity index, which should be an integer number and has been
employed to study the performance of energy detector over composite α --- µ /gamma
fading channel. This channel is proposed to represent the non-linear prorogation
environment. On the other side, the second model is general and has been utilised to
analyse the behaviour of energy detector over composite ŋ --- µ /gamma fading channel.
Finally, a special filter-bank transform which is called slantlet packet transform
(SPT) is developed and used to estimate the uncertain noise power. Moreover, signal
denoising based on hybrid slantlet transform (HST) is employed to reduce the noise
impact on the performance of energy detector. The combined SPT-HST approach
improves the detection capability of energy detector with 97% and reduces the total
computational complexity by nearly 19% in comparison with previously implemented
work using filter-bank transforms. The aforementioned percentages are measured at
specific SNR, number of selected samples and levels of signal decompositionMartyrs Foundatio
Performance Analysis of Maximal-Ratio Combining and Space-Time Block Codes with Transmit Antenna Selection over Nakagami-m Fading Channels
The latest wireless communication techniques such as highspeed wireless internet application demand higher data rates and better quality of service (QoS). However, transmission reliability is still degraded by harsh propagation channels. Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems can increase the system capacity and improve transmission reliability. By transmitting multiple copies of data, a MIMO system can effectively combat the effects of fading. Due to the high hardware cost of a MIMO system, antenna selection techniques have been applied in MIMO system design to reduce the system complexity and cost. The Nakagami-m distribution has been considered for MIMO channel modeling since a wide range of fading channels, from severe to moderate, can be modeled by using Nakagami-m distribution. The Rayleigh distribution is a special case of the Nakagami-m distribution. In this thesis, we analyze the error performance of two MIMO schemes: maximal-ratio combining with transmit antenna selection (the TAS/MRC scheme) and space-time block codes with transmit antenna selection (the TAS/STBC scheme) over Nakagami-m fading channels. In the TAS/MRC scheme, one of multiple transmit antennas, which maximizes the total received signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), is selected for uncoded data transmission. First we use a moment generating function based (MGF-based) approach to derive the bit error rate (BER) expressions for binary phase shift keying (BPSK), the symbol error rate (SER) expressions for M-ray phase shift keying (MPSK) and M-ray quadrature amplitude modulation (MQAM) of the TAS/MRC scheme over Nakagami-m fading channels with arbitrary and integer fading parameters m. The asymptotic performance is also investigated. It is revealed that the asymptotic diversity order is equal to the product of the Nakagami fading parameter m, the number of transmit antenna Lt and the number of receive antenna Lr as if all transmit antenna were used. Then a Gaussian Q-functions approach is used to investigate the error performance of the TAS/STBC scheme over Nakagami-m fading channels. In the TAS/STBC scheme, two transmit antennas, which maximize the output SNR, are selected for transmission. The exact and asymptotic BER expressions for BPSK are obtained for the TAS/STBC schemes with three and four transmit antennas. It is shown that the TAS/STBC scheme can provide a full diversity order of mLtLr
