    Candida auris is an enigmatic yeast that continues to stimulate interest within the mycology community due its rapid and simultaneous emergence of distinct clades. In the last decade, almost 400 manuscripts have contributed to our understanding of this pathogenic yeast. With dynamic epidemiology, elevated resistance levels and an indication of conserved and unique pathogenic traits, it is unsurprising that it continues to cause clinical concern.     Making the Passionate Mind: An Inquiry into Mental Health and Crisis in Education

    This dissertation investigates the passionate qualities of emotional life for the challenges they pose to theories of teaching, learning, and mental health in education. While orientations to mental health frequently manifest in the phantasy of mastery over the mind and the body, this dissertation offers an orientation that conceives of the unknown qualities of the mind from the vantage of unconscious life. Drawing on Julia Kristevas study of passion and maladies and Deborah Britzmans theory of education as an emotional situation, the dissertation offers a study of breakdowns in emotional life as a site for investigating the passionate qualities of teaching and learning. This research investigates such moments of breakdown through a study of three figurations: the mad student, the mad group, and the mad teacher. Through each, the research interprets phantasies of mastery, compliance, omnipotence, control, and cure as unconscious responses to narratives of passionate object relating. Methodologically, the investigation makes use of aesthetic objects, namely film, to interpret phantasies that passionately drive meaning-making even as they also threaten this creative work. The research posits the passionate mind as what binds education to its unconscious underside and argues that education may support mental health by allowing both time and space for its symbolization

    A Transatlantic Bargain for the 21st Century: The United States, Europe, and the Transatlantic Alliance

    In the 21st century, the transatlantic bargain that has framed the relationship between the United States and its NATO allies is under more scrutiny than ever before. In a changed geopolitical environment, one characterized by the complexity of modern military operations, the growing power of China, and a climate of economic austerity in the West, a consensus has emerged on both sides of the Atlantic as to the need for a revised bargain to accommodate the changing dynamics of global politics. Washington is becoming less and less willing to tolerate what it sees as fundamental gaps within the Alliance—in defense spending, capabilities, and military transformation—and is sending clear signals to its European allies, as well as NATO partners, that they must take on a greater share of Alliance burdens, accelerate efforts to generate capabilities and resources, and move away from a deeply-entrenched culture of dependency. European allies are learning they must approach transatlantic relations with a new maturity, and as efforts at multinational defense collaboration accelerate across Europe, there is evidence of a new approach to thinking about transatlantic relations.     The United States' civil space program was rather hurriedly formulated some three decades ago on the heels of the successful launch of the Soviet Sputnik. A dozen humans have been placed on the Moon and safely returned to Earth, seven of the other eight planets have been viewed at close range, including the soft landing of two robot spacecraft on Mars, and a variety of significant astronomical and other scientific observations have been accomplished. Closer to Earth, a network of communications satellites has been established, weather and ocean conditions are now monitored and reported as they occur, and the Earth's surface is observed from space to study natural resources and detect sources of pollution. Problems and perspectives of the program are given as seen by the committee. The committee finds that there are nine concerns about the space program which are deserving of attention. The responsibilities of the agency are given. The space agenda becomes one of what can and should the U.S. afford for its space program. Also given is a concept of what the committee believes is a balanced space program. The programs international role is defined and some final observations and recommendations are made

    Form, function, mind: what doesn't compute (and what might)

    The applicability of computational and dynamical systems models to organisms is scrutinized, using examples from developmental biology and cognition. Developmental morphogenesis is dependent on the inherent material properties of developing tissues, a non-computational modality, but cell differentiation, which utilizes chromatin-based revisable memory banks and program-like function-calling, via the developmental gene co-expression system unique to metazoans, has a quasi-computational basis. Multi-attractor dynamical models are argued to be misapplied to global properties of development, and it is suggested that along with computationalism, dynamicism is similarly unsuitable to accounting for cognitive phenomena. Proposals are made for treating brains and other nervous tissues as novel forms of excitable matter with inherent properties which enable the intensification of cell-based basal cognition capabilities present throughout the tree of life
