Role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) art in care of ageing society: focus on dementia

    Get PDF
open access articleBackground: Art enhances both physical and mental health wellbeing. The health benefits include reduction in blood pressure, heart rate, pain perception and briefer inpatient stays, as well as improvement of communication skills and self-esteem. In addition to these, people living with dementia benefit from reduction of their noncognitive, behavioural changes, enhancement of their cognitive capacities and being socially active. Methods: The current study represents a narrative general literature review on available studies and knowledge about contribution of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in creative arts. Results: We review AI visual arts technologies, and their potential for use among people with dementia and care, drawing on similar experiences to date from traditional art in dementia care. Conclusion: The virtual reality, installations and the psychedelic properties of the AI created art provide a new venue for more detailed research about its therapeutic use in dementia

Intelligence Augmentation: Towards Building Human-Machine Symbiotic Relationship

Artificial intelligence, which people originally modeled after human intelligence, has made significant advances in recent years. These advances have caused many to fear that machines will surpass human intelligence and dominate humans. Intelligence augmentation (IA) has the potential to turn the tension between the two intelligence types into a symbiotic one. Although IA has not gained momentum until recent years, the idea that machines can amplify human abilities has existed for many decades. Expanded from a panel discussion on Intelligence Augmentation at the 2020 International Conference of Information Systems (ICIS), we define IA in light of its history and evolution and classify IA based on its capabilities, roles, and responsibilities. Based on reviewing the IA literature in terms of research themes, enabling technology, and applications, we identify key research issues, challenges, and future opportunities

What Are We Augmenting? A Multidisciplinary Analysis of AI-based Augmentation for the Future of Work.

While augmentation is commonly presented as a desirable path in AI development and implementation, we have not yet found a shared definition for this concept. As the verb “to augment” needs to be followed by a target, we raise the question: What is augmented with AI? Building on a literature review of the augmentation narratives in five different disciplines – i.e., labor economics, computer science, philosophy, management, and information systems – we identify eleven distinct augmentation perspectives taken by scholars of those fields, including the underlying theoretical concepts that indicate what is intended to be augmented. This paper contributes to theory by “going beyond augmentation as collaboration” and helping us to move “towards collaboration for augmentation”

The design of artifacts for augmenting intellect

Fifty years ago, Doug Engelbart created a conceptual framework for augmenting human intellect in the context of problem-solving. We expand upon Engelbart's framework and use his concepts of process hierarchies and artifact augmentation for the design of personal intelligence augmentation (IA) systems within the domains of memory, motivation, decision making, and mood. This paper proposes a systematic design methodology for personal IA devices, organizes existing IA research within a logical framework, and uncovers underexplored areas of IA that could benefit from the invention of new artifacts

Intelligence Augmentation: Human Factors in AI and Future of Work

The availability of parallel and distributed processing at a reasonable cost and the diversity of data sources have contributed to advanced developments in artificial intelligence (AI). These developments in the AI computing environment are not concomitant with changes in the social, legal, and political environment. While considering deploying AI, the deployment context and the end goal of human intelligence augmentation for that specific context have surfaced as significant factors for professionals, organizations, and society. In this research commentary, we highlight some important socio-technical aspects associated with recent growth in AI systems. We elaborate on the intricacies of human-machine interaction that form the foundation of augmented intelligence. We also highlight the ethical considerations that relate to these interactions and explain how augmented intelligence can play a key role in shaping the future of human work

This article emphasizes the increasing importance of artificial intelligence (AI) in military and national security policy making. It seeks to inform interested individuals about the proliferation of publicly accessible U.S. government and military literature on this multifaceted topic. An additional objective of this endeavor is encouraging greater public awareness of and participation in emerging public policy debate on AI\u27s moral and national security implications.

Towards an artificial intelligence (AI)-driven government in the United Arab Emirates (UAE): a framework for transforming and augmenting leadership capabilities

The UAE Government has recently launched a strategy for Artificial Intelligence (AI) that transitions the government to a new phase of becoming an AI-driven government. This strategy aimed to adopt AI-based technologies to boost the overall performance of the government. AI- based technologies have the capability to perform a wide range of human cognitive functions such as voice recognition, image recognition, and prediction. However, to achieve the vision of becoming an AI-driven government, the UAE has to prepare effectively for the transformation by anticipating the various challenges that accompany the adoption of AI-based technologies. Previous research indicated that infusing AI-based technologies will stimulate major shifts in organizations such as reshaping the nature of work, changing how work was previously done, and, more importantly, redefining the measurements of effective leadership. Hence, to particularly address the major shifts triggered by the adoption of AI-based technologies in terms of organizational leadership, this research study explored aspects of effective leadership in the UAE’s future AI-driven government. For this purpose, the study employed an explanatory sequential mixed methods design that incorporated the collection of both quantitative and qualitative data. The key findings of this study contributed to the development of a framework for transforming and augmenting leadership capabilities that could be implemented in UAE’s AI- driven government. This study found that public entities within the UAE government will need to redefine their organizational leadership structure by essentially incorporating roles that foster a culture of innovation and establish a data-driven organization as a major cornerstone for a successful AI-transformation. Equally important, AI-based technologies will enable leaders to become more efficient and productive through the concept of augmented intelligence. The findings of this study also indicated that agile mindset, AI-technology proficiency, data intelligence, and qualities associated with transformational leadership theory are the 4 main competencies which define an effective leader in UAE’s AI-driven government. Finally, this study highly recommends the implementation of more innovative development methods as a key step to build and prepare the leaders needed for the UAE’s AI-driven government

Swarm intelligence via the internet of things and the phenomenological turn

    Get PDF
Considering the current advancements in biometric sensors and other related technologies, as well as the use of bio-inspired models for AI improvements, we can infer that the swarm intelligence paradigm can be implemented in human daily spheres through the connectivity between user gadgets connected to the Internet of Things. This is a first step towards a real Ambient Intelligence, but also of a Global Intelligence. This unconscious (by the user) connectivity may alter the way by which we feel the world. Besides, with the arrival of new augmented ways of capturing and providing information or radical new ways of expanding our bodies (through synthetic biology or artificial prosthesis like brain-computer connections), we can be very close to a change which may radically affect our experience of ourselves and of the feeling of collectivity. We call it the techno-phenomenological turn. We show social implications, present challenges, and and open questions for the new kind of swarm intelligence-enhanced society, and provide the taxonomy of the field of study. We will also explore the possible roadmaps of this next possible situation
