У статті розглядаються специфіка викладання англійської мови як другої іноземної у контексті багатокультурності Канади. Підкреслюється значення інноваційних методик в організації індивідуального підходу та освітньої політики. Описується педагогічна майстерність викладача англійської мови у контексті міжкультурної комунікації. (The article envisages teaching English as a second language in the context of multiculturalism in Canada. The value of innovative methods of teaching in terms of individualization and multicultural education policy are underlined. The professional skills of teacher of English as a second language in the context of cross-cultural communication are embraced.

Blog-based online journals for English As A Second Language learners

The research on the use of blogs as online journals was carried out with a group of twenty five Form Four students in a secondary school in Kuantan, Pahang. The aim of the research is to find out the effects of blogs as a tool in developing writing in English as A Second Language. The instruments include questionnaire, semi-structured interviews and analysis of the blogs content. The research covered students’ perspectives of blogs as the medium for online journals, the effectiveness of blogs as a tool to assist students’ writing skill and to what extent blogs could help students to enhance their writing skills. From the findings, it is discovered that there is a positive impact on the development of students’ writing throughout the research as gained through the instruments. From the research, the students claimed that blogs is an interesting medium for them to write their journals as compared to writing in their log books. Blogs also could help them developed their writing skill in English Language; and through the various features in blogs, students were able to write more effectively

Trung Institute of English as a Second language

Governmental and social pressures in Vietnam have increased the demand for English speakers within the workforce. With insufficient English programs in the public school system, many seek the education elsewhere. The Trung Institute will be a private school in Vietnam, specializing in teaching English as a second language (ESL). Currently ESL programs exist in Vietnam but most employ native English speakers with little teaching background as instructors. Teachers will be recruited from Teaching and ESL programs at Washington State University and Concordia for one-year stints in Vietnam. Teachers will be selected each year through an application process. The Institute is set apart through the use of certified teachers rather than untrained volunteers, and will be marketed as a higher level of education. The institute will prepare students for the Test of English as a Foreign Language, a requirement for citizens of Vietnam to receive their high school diploma. The curriculum will be designed to give students the edge in the workforce. The school will open in Ho Chi Minh. Due to the construction of the new international airport the surrounding area is going through significant development, and is expected to see a large economic boom. The initial investment is projected at $300,000. This will be used in the construction of the school, faculty residences and for operational funds, with high return in the long run from tuition and uniform sales. Once the first school is deemed a success, the model of this institute will be duplicated throughout Vietnam.
