The Research Space: using the career paths of scholars to predict the evolution of the research output of individuals, institutions, and nations
In recent years scholars have built maps of science by connecting the
academic fields that cite each other, are cited together, or that cite a
similar literature. But since scholars cannot always publish in the fields they
cite, or that cite them, these science maps are only rough proxies for the
potential of a scholar, organization, or country, to enter a new academic
field. Here we use a large dataset of scholarly publications disambiguated at
the individual level to create a map of science-or research space-where links
connect pairs of fields based on the probability that an individual has
published in both of them. We find that the research space is a significantly
more accurate predictor of the fields that individuals and organizations will
enter in the future than citation based science maps. At the country level,
however, the research space and citations based science maps are equally
accurate. These findings show that data on career trajectories-the set of
fields that individuals have previously published in-provide more accurate
predictors of future research output for more focalized units-such as
individuals or organizations-than citation based science maps
Continuous Biochemical Processing: Investigating Novel Strategies to Produce Sustainable Fuels and Pharmaceuticals
Biochemical processing methods have been targeted as one of the potential renewable strategies for producing commodities currently dominated by the petrochemical industry. To design biochemical systems with the ability to compete with petrochemical facilities, inroads are needed to transition from traditional batch methods to continuous methods. Recent advancements in the areas of process systems and biochemical engineering have provided the tools necessary to study and design these continuous biochemical systems to maximize productivity and substrate utilization while reducing capital and operating costs.
The first goal of this thesis is to propose a novel strategy for the continuous biochemical production of pharmaceuticals. The structural complexity of most pharmaceutical compounds makes chemical synthesis a difficult option, facilitating the need for their biological production. To this end, a continuous, multi-feed bioreactor system composed of multiple independently controlled feeds for substrate(s) and media is proposed to freely manipulate the bioreactor dilution rate and substrate concentrations. The optimal feed flow rates are determined through the solution to an optimal control problem where the kinetic models describing the time-variant system states are used as constraints. This new bioreactor paradigm is exemplified through the batch and continuous cultivation of β-carotene, a representative product of the mevalonate pathway, using Saccharomyces cerevisiae strain mutant SM14.
The second goal of this thesis is to design continuous, biochemical processes capable of economically producing alternative liquid fuels. The large-scale, continuous production of ethanol via consolidated bioprocessing (CBP) is examined. Optimal process topologies for the CBP technology selected from a superstructure considering multiple biomass feeds, chosen from those available across the United States, and multiple prospective pretreatment technologies. Similarly, the production of butanol via acetone-butanol-ethanol (ABE) fermentation is explored using process intensification to improve process productivity and profitability. To overcome the inhibitory nature of the butanol product, the multi-feed bioreactor paradigm developed for pharmaceutical production is utilized with in situ gas stripping to simultaneously provide dilution effects and selectively remove the volatile ABE components. Optimal control and process synthesis techniques are utilized to determine the benefits of gas stripping and design a butanol production process guaranteed to be profitable

"In these pages you will learn about the fascinating research endeavors that each of our faculty members is undertaking. We have divided their research into the broad categories of health, sustainability, information, and systems. While we recognize the imperfect nature of categorizing research that, by its very nature may be interdisciplinary or transdisciplinary, we nonetheless believe it will be helpful as a way to see the depth and breadth of our research endeavors within each grouping. As you read the profiles on these pages, I know you will begin to appreciate that, taken as a whole, the research spectrum at Columbia Engineering is exceptional and that, as our professors go about their work, they are at the cusp of making breakthroughs that will have a major impact on the way we live our lives today and tomorrow.

Sustainable Materials and Chemical Processes for Additive Manufacturing
Unformatted postprintAdditive manufacturing (AM) is energizing the fields of chemistry and materials science to develop new inks for new applications within fields such as aerospace, robotics, and healthcare. AM enables the fabrication of innumerable 3D geometries that cannot be easily produced by other means. In spite of the great promise of AM as an advanced form of future manufacturing, there are still fundamental challenges with respect to sustainability that need to be addressed. Some of the material needs for AM include sustainable sources of printing inks, resins, and filaments, as well as pathways for polymer recycling, upcycling, and chemical circularity. Furthermore, the combination of bio-sourced and biodegradable polymers with additive manufacturing could enable the fabrication of objects that can be recycled back into feedstock or degraded into non-toxic products after they have served their function. Herein, we review the recent literature on the design and chemistry of the polymers to that enable sustainability within the field of AM, with a particular focus on biodegradable and bio-sourced polymers. We also discuss some of the sustainability-related applications that have emerged as a result of AM technologies.E.S.-R. thanks the European funding by the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Individual Fellowships (MSCA-IF-GF) 841879-4D Biogel. The doctoral research abstracts. Vol:11 2017 / Institute of Graduate Studies, UiTM
Foreword:
Congratulation to IGS on the continuous effort to publish the 11th issue of the Doctoral Research
Abstracts which highlights the research in various disciplines from science and technology, business
and administration to social science and humanities. This research abstract issue features the abstracts
from 91 PhD doctorates who will receive their scrolls in this 86th UiTM momentous convocation
ceremony. This is a special year for the Institute of Graduate Studies where we are celebrating our
20th anniversary. The 20th anniversary is celebrated with pride with an increase in the number of PhD
graduates.
In this 86th convocation, the number of PhD graduates has increased by 30%
compared to the previous convocation. Each research produces an innovation
and this year, 91 research innovations have been successfully recognized to have
made contributions to the body of knowledge. This is in line with this year UiTM
theme that is “Inovasi Melonjak Persaingan Global (Innovation Soars Global
Competition)”.
Embarking on PhD research may not have been an easy decision for many of
you. It often comes at a point in life when the decision to further one’s studies
is challenged by the comfort of status quo. I would like it to be known that you
have most certainly done UiTM proud by journeying through the scholarly
world with its endless challenges and obstacles, and by persevering right
till the very end.
Again, congratulations to all PhD graduates. As you leave the university
as alumni we hope a new relationship will be fostered between you
and UiTM to ensure UiTM soars to greater heights. I wish you all the
best in your future endeavor. Keep UiTM close to your heart and be
our ambassadors wherever you go. / Prof Emeritus Dato’ Dr Hassan Said
