A Secure and Low-Energy Zone-based Wireless Sensor Networks Routing Protocol for Pollution Monitoring
[EN] Sensor networks can be used in many sorts of environments. The increase of pollution and carbon footprint are nowadays an important environmental problem. The use of sensors and sensor networks can help to make an early detection in order to mitigate their effect over the medium. The deployment of wireless sensor networks (WSNs) requires high-energy efficiency and secures mechanisms to ensure the data veracity. Moreover, when WSNs are deployed in harsh environments, it is very difficult to recharge or replace the sensor's batteries. For this reason, the increase of network lifetime is highly desired. WSNs also work in unattended environments, which is vulnerable to different sort of attacks. Therefore, both energy efficiency and security must be considered in the development of routing protocols for WSNs. In this paper, we present a novel Secure and Low-energy Zone-based Routing Protocol (SeLeZoR) where the nodes of the WSN are split into zones and each zone is separated into clusters. Each cluster is controlled by a cluster head. Firstly, the information is securely sent to the zone-head using a secret key; then, the zone-head sends the data to the base station using the secure and energy efficient mechanism. This paper demonstrates that SeLeZoR achieves better energy efficiency and security levels than existing routing protocols for WSNs.Mehmood, A.; Lloret, J.; Sendra, S. (2016). Performance Analysis of Hierarchical Routing Protocols in Wireless Sensor Networks
This work focusses on analyzing the optimization strategies of routing
protocols with respect to energy utilization of sensor nodes in Wireless Sensor
Network (WSNs). Different routing mechanisms have been proposed to address
energy optimization problem in sensor nodes. Clustering mechanism is one of the
popular WSNs routing mechanisms. In this paper, we first address energy
limitation constraints with respect to maximizing network life time using
linear programming formulation technique. To check the efficiency of different
clustering scheme against modeled constraints, we select four cluster based
routing protocols; Low Energy Adaptive Clustering Hierarchy (LEACH), Threshold
Sensitive Energy Efficient sensor Network (TEEN), Stable Election Protocol
(SEP), and Distributed Energy Efficient Clustering (DEEC). To validate our
mathematical framework, we perform analytical simulations in MATLAB by choosing
number of alive nodes, number of dead nodes, number of packets and number of
CHs, as performance metrics.Comment: NGWMN with 7th IEEE International Conference on Broadband and

MODLEACH: A Variant of LEACH for WSNs
Wireless sensor networks are appearing as an emerging need for mankind.
Though, Such networks are still in research phase however, they have high
potential to be applied in almost every field of life. Lots of research is done
and a lot more is awaiting to be standardized. In this work, cluster based
routing in wireless sensor networks is studied precisely. Further, we modify
one of the most prominent wireless sensor network's routing protocol "LEACH" as
modified LEACH (MODLEACH) by introducing \emph{efficient cluster head
replacement scheme} and \emph{dual transmitting power levels}. Our modified
LEACH, in comparison with LEACH out performs it using metrics of cluster head
formation, through put and network life. Afterwards, hard and soft thresholds
are implemented on modified LEACH (MODLEACH) that boast the performance even
more. Finally a brief performance analysis of LEACH, Modified LEACH (MODLEACH),
MODLEACH with hard threshold (MODLEACHHT) and MODLEACH with soft threshold
(MODLEACHST) is undertaken considering metrics of throughput, network life and
cluster head replacements.Comment: IEEE 8th International Conference on Broadband and Wireless

Analyzing Energy-efficiency and Route-selection of Multi-level Hierarchal Routing Protocols in WSNs
The advent and development in the field of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) in
recent years has seen the growth of extremely small and low-cost sensors that
possess sensing, signal processing and wireless communication capabilities.
These sensors can be expended at a much lower cost and are capable of detecting
conditions such as temperature, sound, security or any other system. A good
protocol design should be able to scale well both in energy heterogeneous and
homogeneous environment, meet the demands of different application scenarios
and guarantee reliability. On this basis, we have compared six different
protocols of different scenarios which are presenting their own schemes of
energy minimizing, clustering and route selection in order to have more
effective communication. This research is motivated to have an insight that
which of the under consideration protocols suit well in which application and
can be a guide-line for the design of a more robust and efficient protocol.
MATLAB simulations are performed to analyze and compare the performance of
LEACH, multi-level hierarchal LEACH and multihop LEACH.Comment: NGWMN with 7th IEEE Inter- national Conference on Broadband and

AM-DisCNT: Angular Multi-hop DIStance based Circular Network Transmission Protocol for WSNs
The nodes in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) contain limited energy
resources, which are needed to transmit data to base station (BS). Routing
protocols are designed to reduce the energy consumption. Clustering algorithms
are best in this aspect. Such clustering algorithms increase the stability and
lifetime of the network. However, every routing protocol is not suitable for
heterogeneous environments. AM-DisCNT is proposed and evaluated as a new energy
efficient protocol for wireless sensor networks. AM-DisCNT uses circular
deployment for even consumption of energy in entire wireless sensor network.
Cluster-head selection is on the basis of energy. Highest energy node becomes
CH for that round. Energy is again compared in the next round to check the
highest energy node of that round. The simulation results show that AM-DisCNT
performs better than the existing heterogeneous protocols on the basis of
network lifetime, throughput and stability of the system.Comment: IEEE 8th International Conference on Broadband and Wireless

Energy-Efficient Multi-Level and Distance-Aware Clustering Mechanism for WSNs
[EN] Most sensor networks are deployed at hostile environments to sense and gather specific information. As
sensor nodes have battery constraints, therefore, the research community is trying to propose energyefficient
solutions for wireless sensor networks (WSNs) to prolong the lifetime of the network. In this paper,
we propose an energy-efficient multi-level and distance-aware clustering (EEMDC) mechanism for WSNs.
In this mechanism, the area of the network is divided into three logical layers, which depends upon the
hop-count-based distance from the base station. The simulation outcomes show that EEMDC is more energy
efficient than other existing conventional approaches. This work has been partially supported by the 'Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovacion', through the 'Plan Nacional de I+D+i 2008-2011' in the 'Subprograma de Proyectos de Investigacion Fundamental', project TEC2011-27516, and by the Polytechnic University of Valencia, through the PAID-15-11 multidisciplinary projectsMehmood, A.; Khan, S.; Shams, B.; Lloret, J. M-GEAR: Gateway-Based Energy-Aware Multi-Hop Routing Protocol for WSNs
In this research work, we advise gateway based energy-efficient routing
protocol (M-GEAR) for Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). We divide the sensor
nodes into four logical regions on the basis of their location in the sensing
field. We install Base Station (BS) out of the sensing area and a gateway node
at the centre of the sensing area. If the distance of a sensor node from BS or
gateway is less than predefined distance threshold, the node uses direct
communication. We divide the rest of nodes into two equal regions whose
distance is beyond the threshold distance. We select cluster heads (CHs)in each
region which are independent of the other region. These CHs are selected on the
basis of a probability. We compare performance of our protocol with LEACH (Low
Energy Adaptive Clustering Hierarchy). Performance analysis and compared
statistic results show that our proposed protocol perform well in terms of
energy consumption and network lifetime.Comment: IEEE 8th International Conference on Broadband and Wireless

Energy Consumption Rate based Stable Election Protocol (ECRSEP) for WSNs
In recent few yearsWireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) have seen an increased
interest in various applications like border field security, disaster
management and medical applications. So large number of sensor nodes are
deployed for such applications, which can work autonomously. Due to small power
batteries in WSNs, efficient utilization of battery power is an important
factor. Clustering is an efficient technique to extend life time of sensor
networks by reducing the energy consumption. In this paper, we propose a new
protocol; Energy Consumption Rate based Stable Election Protocol (ECRSEP). Our
CH selection scheme is based on the weighted election probabilities of each
node according to the Energy Consumption Rate (ECR) of each node. We compare
results of our proposed protocol with Low Energy Adaptive Clustering Hierarchy
(LEACH), Distributed Energy Efficient Clustering (DEEC), Stable Election
Protocol (SEP), and Enhanced SEP(ESEP). Our simulation results show that our
proposed protocol, ECRSEP outperforms all these protocols in terms of network
stability and network lifetime
