A stochastic geometry analysis of cooperative wireless networks powered by energy harvesting
textEnergy harvesting technology is essential for enabling green, sustainable and autonomous wireless networks. In this report, a large-scale wireless network with energy harvesting transmitters is considered, where a group of transmitters forms a cluster to cooperatively serve a desired user in the presence of co-channel interference and noise. Using stochastic geometry, simple closed-form expressions are derived to characterize the outage performance at the user as a function of important parameters such as the energy harvesting rate, the energy buffer size and the cluster size for a given cluster geometry. The analysis is further extended to characterize the delay due to transmission failure. The developed framework is flexible in that it allows the in-cluster transmitters to have possibly different energy harvesting capabilities. The analytical expressions are first validated using simulations and then used for investigating the impact of different parameters such as cluster and buffer size on outage performance. The results suggest that substantial outage performance can in fact be extracted with a relatively small energy buffer. Moreover, the utility of having a large energy buffer increases with the cluster size as well as with the energy harvesting rate.Electrical and Computer Engineerin
Energy Harvesting Wireless Communications: A Review of Recent Advances
This article summarizes recent contributions in the broad area of energy
harvesting wireless communications. In particular, we provide the current state
of the art for wireless networks composed of energy harvesting nodes, starting
from the information-theoretic performance limits to transmission scheduling
policies and resource allocation, medium access and networking issues. The
emerging related area of energy transfer for self-sustaining energy harvesting
wireless networks is considered in detail covering both energy cooperation
aspects and simultaneous energy and information transfer. Various potential
models with energy harvesting nodes at different network scales are reviewed as
well as models for energy consumption at the nodes.Comment: To appear in the IEEE Journal of Selected Areas in Communications

Power beacon-assisted energy harvesting in a half-duplex communication network under co-channel interference over a Rayleigh fading environment: Energy efficiency and outage probability analysis
In this time, energy efficiency (EE), measured in bits per Watt, has been considered as an important emerging metric in energy-constrained wireless communication networks because of their energy shortage. In this paper, we investigate power beacon assisted (PB) energy harvesting (EH) in half-duplex (HD) communication network under co-channel Interferer over Rayleigh fading environment. In this work, we investigate the model system with the time switching (TS) protocol. Firstly, the exact and asymptotic form expressions of the outage probability (OP) are analyzed and derived. Then the system EE is investigated and the influence of the primary system parameters on the system performance. Finally, we verify the correctness of the analytical expressions using Monte Carlo simulation. Finally, we can state that the simulation and analytical results are the same.Web of Science1213art. no. 257
Power Beacon-Assisted Millimeter Wave Ad Hoc Networks
Deployment of low cost power beacons (PBs) is a promising solution for
dedicated wireless power transfer (WPT) in future wireless networks. In this
paper, we present a tractable model for PB-assisted millimeter wave (mmWave)
wireless ad hoc networks, where each transmitter (TX) harvests energy from all
PBs and then uses the harvested energy to transmit information to its desired
receiver. Our model accounts for realistic aspects of WPT and mmWave
transmissions, such as power circuit activation threshold, allowed maximum
harvested power, maximum transmit power, beamforming and blockage. Using
stochastic geometry, we obtain the Laplace transform of the aggregate received
power at the TX to calculate the power coverage probability. We approximate and
discretize the transmit power of each TX into a finite number of discrete power
levels in log scale to compute the channel and total coverage probability. We
compare our analytical predictions to simulations and observe good accuracy.
The proposed model allows insights into effect of system parameters, such as
transmit power of PBs, PB density, main lobe beam-width and power circuit
activation threshold on the overall coverage probability. The results confirm
that it is feasible and safe to power TXs in a mmWave ad hoc network using PBs.Comment: This work has been submitted to the IEEE for possible publication.
