WikiLinkGraphs: A Complete, Longitudinal and Multi-Language Dataset of the Wikipedia Link Networks

Wikipedia articles contain multiple links connecting a subject to other pages of the encyclopedia. In Wikipedia parlance, these links are called internal links or wikilinks. We present a complete dataset of the network of internal Wikipedia links for the 99 largest language editions. The dataset contains yearly snapshots of the network and spans 1717 years, from the creation of Wikipedia in 2001 to March 1st, 2018. While previous work has mostly focused on the complete hyperlink graph which includes also links automatically generated by templates, we parsed each revision of each article to track links appearing in the main text. In this way we obtained a cleaner network, discarding more than half of the links and representing all and only the links intentionally added by editors. We describe in detail how the Wikipedia dumps have been processed and the challenges we have encountered, including the need to handle special pages such as redirects, i.e., alternative article titles. We present descriptive statistics of several snapshots of this network. Finally, we propose several research opportunities that can be explored using this new dataset.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures, 7 tables, LaTeX. Dental amalgam fillings: An under-investigated source of mercury exposure

    Get PDF
Dental amalgam fillings, which contain about 50% mercury, have been used since the early 19th century. However, their use has been controversial, particularly because they continually release small amounts of mercury. Inorganic mercury is known to be highly toxic, particularly to the nervous system and kidneys, but exposures from amalgam fillings are generally well below those established as toxic. However, uncertainties about threshold concentrations of effect and the nature of any long-term exposure effects remain. Considering the long-standing and widespread use of these fillings, there has been remarkably little investigation of their safety and most epidemiologic studies have been relatively recent. In general, investigations to date have shown little evidence of effects on general chronic disease incidence or mortality. There have been few studies so far of neurodegenerative diseases and results have been equivocal. Assessments of the safety of dental amalgam have mainly been based on studies of occupationally exposed populations. However, the amalgam-exposed population contains a broader, potentially more susceptible, spectrum of people. In that regard, a number of studies of children that have found no evidence of health effects have provided some reassurance

Cross-language Wikipedia Editing of Okinawa, Japan

This article analyzes users who edit Wikipedia articles about Okinawa, Japan, in English and Japanese. It finds these users are among the most active and dedicated users in their primary languages, where they make many large, high-quality edits. However, when these users edit in their non-primary languages, they tend to make edits of a different type that are overall smaller in size and more often restricted to the narrow set of articles that exist in both languages. Design changes to motivate wider contributions from users in their non-primary languages and to encourage multilingual users to transfer more information across language divides are presented.Comment: In Proceedings of the SIGCHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems, CHI 2015. Identification of Design Principles

    Get PDF
This report identifies those design principles for a (possibly new) query and transformation language for the Web supporting inference that are considered essential. Based upon these design principles an initial strawman is selected. Scenarios for querying the Semantic Web illustrate the design principles and their reflection in the initial strawman, i.e., a first draft of the query language to be designed and implemented by the REWERSE working group I4
