    Optimal Order Assignment with Minimum Wage Consideration (OOAMWC)

    While the application of crowdsourcing has increased over the years, the technology experiences various issues during implementation. Examples of some of the issues that affect crowdsourcing include task assignment, profit maximizations, as well as time window issues. In some instances addressing some of the issues results in the other issues being overlooked. An example is when assigning tasks to workers, the profits of the workers might not be considered and this ends up affecting the profit maximization aspect. Various algorithms have been proposed to address the task assignment, profit maximizations, and time window issues. However, these algorithms address the issues individually and this results in the occurrence of the other noted issues. Therefore, this calls for the definition of a solution to address the task assignment issue while taking into consideration the time window issue and the minimum wage constraint. Additionally, the solution should address the profit maximization of not only the workers but also the platform and the clients of the platform. To evaluate the efficiency of the proposed solution, a comparison with the different implemented solutions to address individual issues is recommended. Comparing such solutions can provide insight into the efficiency of the proposed approach when addressing multiple issues affecting crowdsourcing

    PREFERENCE-AWARE TASK ASSIGNMENT IN MOBILE CROWDSENSING

    Mobile crowdsensing (MCS) is an emerging form of crowdsourcing, which facilitates the sensing data collection with the help of mobile participants (workers). A central problem in MCS is the assignment of sensing tasks to workers. Existing work in the field mostly seek a system-level optimization of task assignments (e.g., maximize the number of completed tasks, minimize the total distance traveled by workers) without considering individual preferences of task requesters and workers. However, users may be reluctant to participate in MCS campaigns that disregard their preferences. In this dissertation, we argue that user preferences should be a primary concern in the task assignment process for an MCS campaign to be effective, and we develop preference-aware task assignment (PTA) mechanisms for five different MCS settings. Since the PTA problem is computationally hard in most of these settings, we present efficient approximation and heuristic algorithms. Extensive simulations performed on synthetic and real data sets validate our theoretical results, and demonstrate that the proposed algorithms produce near-optimal solutions in terms of preference-awareness, outperforming the state-of-the-art assignment algorithms by a wide margin in most cases

    Matching-based Hybrid Service Trading for Task Assignment over Dynamic Mobile Crowdsensing Networks

    By opportunistically engaging mobile users (workers), mobile crowdsensing (MCS) networks have emerged as important approach to facilitate sharing of sensed/gathered data of heterogeneous mobile devices. To assign tasks among workers and ensure low overheads, a series of stable matching mechanisms is introduced in this paper, which are integrated into a novel hybrid service trading paradigm consisting of futures trading mode and spot trading mode to ensure seamless MCS service provisioning. In the futures trading mode, we determine a set of long-term workers for each task through an overbooking-enabled in-advance many-to-many matching (OIA3M) mechanism, while characterizing the associated risks under statistical analysis. In the spot trading mode, we investigate the impact of fluctuations in long-term workers' resources on the violation of service quality requirements of tasks, and formalize a spot trading mode for tasks with violated service quality requirements under practical budget constraints, where the task-worker mapping is carried out via onsite many-to-many matching (O3M) and onsite many-to-one matching (OMOM). We theoretically show that our proposed matching mechanisms satisfy stability, individual rationality, fairness and computational efficiency. Comprehensive evaluations also verify the satisfaction of these properties under practical network settings, while revealing commendable performance on running time, participators' interactions, and service quality

    Task Allocation among Connected Devices: Requirements, Approaches and Challenges

    Task allocation (TA) is essential when deploying application tasks to systems of connected devices with dissimilar and time-varying characteristics. The challenge of an efficient TA is to assign the tasks to the best devices, according to the context and task requirements. The main purpose of this paper is to study the different connotations of the concept of TA efficiency, and the key factors that most impact on it, so that relevant design guidelines can be defined. The paper first analyzes the domains of connected devices where TA has an important role, which brings to this classification: Internet of Things (IoT), Sensor and Actuator Networks (SAN), Multi-Robot Systems (MRS), Mobile Crowdsensing (MCS), and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV). The paper then demonstrates that the impact of the key factors on the domains actually affects the design choices of the state-of-the-art TA solutions. It results that resource management has most significantly driven the design of TA algorithms in all domains, especially IoT and SAN. The fulfillment of coverage requirements is important for the definition of TA solutions in MCS and UAV. Quality of Information requirements are mostly included in MCS TA strategies, similar to the design of appropriate incentives. The paper also discusses the issues that need to be addressed by future research activities, i.e.: allowing interoperability of platforms in the implementation of TA functionalities; introducing appropriate trust evaluation algorithms; extending the list of tasks performed by objects; designing TA strategies where network service providers have a role in TA functionalities’ provisioning

    Delivering IoT Services in Smart Cities and Environmental Monitoring through Collective Awareness, Mobile Crowdsensing and Open Data

    The Internet of Things (IoT) is the paradigm that allows us to interact with the real world by means of networking-enabled devices and convert physical phenomena into valuable digital knowledge. Such a rapidly evolving field leveraged the explosion of a number of technologies, standards and platforms. Consequently, different IoT ecosystems behave as closed islands and do not interoperate with each other, thus the potential of the number of connected objects in the world is far from being totally unleashed. Typically, research efforts in tackling such challenge tend to propose a new IoT platforms or standards, however, such solutions find obstacles in keeping up the pace at which the field is evolving. Our work is different, in that it originates from the following observation: in use cases that depend on common phenomena such as Smart Cities or environmental monitoring a lot of useful data for applications is already in place somewhere or devices capable of collecting such data are already deployed. For such scenarios, we propose and study the use of Collective Awareness Paradigms (CAP), which offload data collection to a crowd of participants. We bring three main contributions: we study the feasibility of using Open Data coming from heterogeneous sources, focusing particularly on crowdsourced and user-contributed data that has the drawback of being incomplete and we then propose a State-of-the-Art algorith that automatically classifies raw crowdsourced sensor data; we design a data collection framework that uses Mobile Crowdsensing (MCS) and puts the participants and the stakeholders in a coordinated interaction together with a distributed data collection algorithm that prevents the users from collecting too much or too less data; (3) we design a Service Oriented Architecture that constitutes a unique interface to the raw data collected through CAPs through their aggregation into ad-hoc services, moreover, we provide a prototype implementation

    Allocating Heterogeneous Tasks in Participatory Sensing with Diverse Participant-Side Factors

    This paper proposes a novel task allocation framework, PSTasker, for participatory sensing (PS), which aims to maximize the overall system utility on PS platform by coordinating the allocation of multiple tasks. While existing studies mainly optimize the task allocation from the perspective of the task organizer (e.g., maximizing coverage or minimizing incentive cost), PSTasker further considers diverse factors on the participants' side, including user work bandwidth, user availability, devices' sensor configuration, task completion likelihood, and mobility pattern. Furthermore, by considering the heterogeneity in three dimensions (i.e., task, time and space), it adopts a novel model to measure task sensing quality and overall system utility. In PSTasker, it first calculates the utlity of a given task allocation plan by jointly fusing different participant-side factors into one unified estimation function, and then employs an iterative greedy process to optimize the task allocation. Extensive evaluations based on real-world mobility traces demonstrate that PSTasker outperforms the baseline methods under various settings

    Vehicle as a Service (VaaS): Leverage Vehicles to Build Service Networks and Capabilities for Smart Cities

    Smart cities demand resources for rich immersive sensing, ubiquitous communications, powerful computing, large storage, and high intelligence (SCCSI) to support various kinds of applications, such as public safety, connected and autonomous driving, smart and connected health, and smart living. At the same time, it is widely recognized that vehicles such as autonomous cars, equipped with significantly powerful SCCSI capabilities, will become ubiquitous in future smart cities. By observing the convergence of these two trends, this article advocates the use of vehicles to build a cost-effective service network, called the Vehicle as a Service (VaaS) paradigm, where vehicles empowered with SCCSI capability form a web of mobile servers and communicators to provide SCCSI services in smart cities. Towards this direction, we first examine the potential use cases in smart cities and possible upgrades required for the transition from traditional vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) to VaaS. Then, we will introduce the system architecture of the VaaS paradigm and discuss how it can provide SCCSI services in future smart cities, respectively. At last, we identify the open problems of this paradigm and future research directions, including architectural design, service provisioning, incentive design, and security & privacy. We expect that this paper paves the way towards developing a cost-effective and sustainable approach for building smart cities.Comment: 32 pages, 11 figure
