    Performance Analysis of Publish/Subscribe Systems

    The Desktop Grid offers solutions to overcome several challenges and to answer increasingly needs of scientific computing. Its technology consists mainly in exploiting resources, geographically dispersed, to treat complex applications needing big power of calculation and/or important storage capacity. However, as resources number increases, the need for scalability, self-organisation, dynamic reconfigurations, decentralisation and performance becomes more and more essential. Since such properties are exhibited by P2P systems, the convergence of grid computing and P2P computing seems natural. In this context, this paper evaluates the scalability and performance of P2P tools for discovering and registering services. Three protocols are used for this purpose: Bonjour, Avahi and Free-Pastry. We have studied the behaviour of theses protocols related to two criteria: the elapsed time for registrations services and the needed time to discover new services. Our aim is to analyse these results in order to choose the best protocol we can use in order to create a decentralised middleware for desktop grid

With the emergence of the Open Grid Service Architecture and Globus Toolkit as incubators for evolving ASP business model to maintain profitability, this paper presents an in-depth analysis of the hypothetical Grid Service Provision (GSP) model by firstly giving an historical account of evolutionary factors in Internet architectures leading to Grid and P2P and secondly, investigating GSP model in the contexts of Service Level Agreements metrics and GSP implementation details.     Enabling JXTA for High Performance Grid Computing

    Grid computing has recently emerged as a response to the growing demand for resources (processing power, storage, etc.) exhibited by scientific applications. However, as grid sizes increase, the need for self-organization and dynamic reconfigurations is becoming more and more important. Since such properties are exhibited by P2P systems, the convergence of grid computing and P2P computing seems natural. However, using P2P systems (usually running on the Internet) on a grid infrastructure (generally available as a federation of SAN-based clusters interconnected by high-bandwidth WANs) may raise the issue of the adequacy of the P2P communication mechanisms. This paper evaluates the communication performance of the JXTA P2P library over SANs and WANs, for both J2SE and C bindings. We analyze these results and we evaluate solutions able to improve the performance of JXTA on such grid infrastructures

    A practical example of convergence of P2P and grid computing: an evaluation of JXTA's communication performance on grid networking infrastructures

    International audienceAs the size of today's grid computing platforms increases, the need for self-organization and dynamic reconfiguration becomes more and more important. In this context, the convergence of grid computing and peer-to-peer (P2P) computing seems natural. However, grid infrastructures are generally available as a hierarchical federation of SAN-based clusters interconnected by high-bandwidth WANs. In contrast, P2P systems usually run on the Internet, on top of random, generally flat network topologies. This difference may lead to the legitimate question of how adequate are the P2P communication mechanisms on hierarchical grid infrastructures. Answering this question is important, since it is essential to efficiently exploit the particular features of grid networking topologies in order to meet the constraints of scientific applications. This paper evaluates the communication performance of the JXTA P2P platform over high-performance SANs and WANs, for both J2SE and C bindings. We discuss these results, then we propose and evaluate several techniques able to improve the JXTA's performance on such grid networking infrastructures

    On distributed data processing in data grid architecture for a virtual repository

    The article describes the problem of integration of distributed, heterogeneous and fragmented collections of data with application of the virtual repository and the data grid concept. The technology involves: wrappers enveloping external resources, a virtual network (based on the peer-topeer technology) responsible for integration of data into one global schema and a distributed index for speeding-up data retrieval. Authors present a method for obtaining data from heterogeneously structured external databases and then a procedure of integration the data to one, commonly available, global schema. The core of the described solution is based on the Stack-Based Query Language (SBQL) and virtual updatable SBQL views. The system transport and indexing layer is based on the P2P architecture

    A schema-based P2P network to enable publish-subscribe for multimedia content in open hypermedia systems

    Open Hypermedia Systems (OHS) aim to provide efficient dissemination, adaptation and integration of hyperlinked multimedia resources. Content available in Peer-to-Peer (P2P) networks could add significant value to OHS provided that challenges for efficient discovery and prompt delivery of rich and up-to-date content are successfully addressed. This paper proposes an architecture that enables the operation of OHS over a P2P overlay network of OHS servers based on semantic annotation of (a) peer OHS servers and of (b) multimedia resources that can be obtained through the link services of the OHS. The architecture provides efficient resource discovery. Semantic query-based subscriptions over this P2P network can enable access to up-to-date content, while caching at certain peers enables prompt delivery of multimedia content. Advanced query resolution techniques are employed to match different parts of subscription queries (subqueries). These subscriptions can be shared among different interested peers, thus increasing the efficiency of multimedia content dissemination

    Implementing a mobile campus using MLE Moodle

    Mobile learning is considered the next step of online learning by incorporating mobility as a key requirement. Indeed, the current wide spread of mobile devices and wireless technologies brings an enormous potential to e-learning, in terms of ubiquity, pervasiveness, personalization, flexibility, and so on. For this reason, Mobile Learning is attracting significant research efforts covering a fairly variety of learning settings, from schools and universities to workplaces and cities. This research has evidenced that mobile technology can offer new opportunities for learners to learn inside and beyond the traditional instructor-oriented educational paradigm. However, mobile technologies are still in its infancy and many challenges arise. In this paper we analyze, from both learning and technological perspectives, the development of learning applications using mobile devices. To this end, proxy and proxy less architectures are considered as way to extend traditional virtual campuses with mobile clients. The objective is twofold: to access learning materials and to support learning activities. A prototype of a Virtual Campus is developed using MLE-Moodle -the Mobile Learning module of Moodle.
