Multimedia delivery in the future internet
The term âNetworked Mediaâ implies that all kinds of media including text, image, 3D graphics, audio
and video are produced, distributed, shared, managed and consumed on-line through various networks,
like the Internet, Fiber, WiFi, WiMAX, GPRS, 3G and so on, in a convergent manner [1]. This white
paper is the contribution of the Media Delivery Platform (MDP) cluster and aims to cover the Networked
challenges of the Networked Media in the transition to the Future of the Internet.
Internet has evolved and changed the way we work and live. End users of the Internet have been confronted
with a bewildering range of media, services and applications and of technological innovations concerning
media formats, wireless networks, terminal types and capabilities. And there is little evidence that the pace
of this innovation is slowing. Today, over one billion of users access the Internet on regular basis, more
than 100 million users have downloaded at least one (multi)media file and over 47 millions of them do so
regularly, searching in more than 160 Exabytes1 of content. In the near future these numbers are expected
to exponentially rise. It is expected that the Internet content will be increased by at least a factor of 6, rising
to more than 990 Exabytes before 2012, fuelled mainly by the users themselves. Moreover, it is envisaged
that in a near- to mid-term future, the Internet will provide the means to share and distribute (new)
multimedia content and services with superior quality and striking flexibility, in a trusted and personalized
way, improving citizensâ quality of life, working conditions, edutainment and safety.
In this evolving environment, new transport protocols, new multimedia encoding schemes, cross-layer inthe
network adaptation, machine-to-machine communication (including RFIDs), rich 3D content as well as
community networks and the use of peer-to-peer (P2P) overlays are expected to generate new models of
interaction and cooperation, and be able to support enhanced perceived quality-of-experience (PQoE) and
innovative applications âon the moveâ, like virtual collaboration environments, personalised services/
media, virtual sport groups, on-line gaming, edutainment. In this context, the interaction with content
combined with interactive/multimedia search capabilities across distributed repositories, opportunistic P2P
networks and the dynamic adaptation to the characteristics of diverse mobile terminals are expected to
contribute towards such a vision.
Based on work that has taken place in a number of EC co-funded projects, in Framework Program 6 (FP6)
and Framework Program 7 (FP7), a group of experts and technology visionaries have voluntarily
contributed in this white paper aiming to describe the status, the state-of-the art, the challenges and the way
ahead in the area of Content Aware media delivery platforms
Peer-to-Peer Networks and Computation: Current Trends and Future Perspectives
This research papers examines the state-of-the-art in the area of P2P networks/computation. It attempts to identify the challenges that confront the community of P2P researchers and developers, which need to be addressed before the potential of P2P-based systems, can be effectively realized beyond content distribution and file-sharing applications to build real-world, intelligent and commercial software systems. Future perspectives and some thoughts on the evolution of P2P-based systems are also provided
Cost-Effective Situational Awareness Through IoT COTS Radios
Situational awareness (SA) through encrypted connectivity in modern warfare
is critical to battlefield coordination. Existing solutions provide
infrastructure-less connectivity and situational awareness, but at a high cost,
power consumption, and bulky form factors that limit their utility for tactical
operations. We propose the Beartooth MKII radios as a cost- and
power-effective, handy solution for establishing a situational awareness
overlay. To integrate with military information brokers, such as the Tactical
Assault Kit (TAK), we propose the Beartooth Gateway, which creates an IP
network between Beartooth radios, Gateways, and other TAK-capable devices. We
show that leveraging Internet of Things (IoT) Commercial Off The Shelf (COTS)
components for MKII and the Gateway can enhance the availability of SA and meet
the user requirements in the field while ensuring compatibility with existing

Localising Peers in P2P Live Streaming Systems Within Resource-Constrained Networks
The use of locality within peer-to-peer (P2P) networks
is showing promise, ensuring the construction of overlay networks that are both economically viable for network operators and scalable, ensuring the successful delivery of content. However, the underlying protocols on which P2P overlays are based were originally designed as a best-effort, non-real time transfer medium which is now rapidly having to evolve in order to better support
more time sensitive, real-time video delivery systems. This shift places greater demand on locality mechanisms to ensure the correct balance between bandwidth savings and successful timely playback. In this paper, we continue our work to resolve the strong trade-off resulted from the limited network condition in order to support efficient P2P live streaming services. Based on our findings we propose an OPLoc framework for supporting locality and harmonised play points in a live streaming P2P system. We present our results and analysis of its operation through a series
of simulations which measure bandwidth consumption at network egress points, failure rates and each peersâ play point relative to the live stream
ICT and the Environment in Developing Countries: an Overview of Opportunities and Developments
Both developed and developing countries face many environmental challenges, including climate change, improving energy efficiency and waste management, addressing air pollution, water quality and scarcity, and loss of natural habitats and biodiversity. Drawing on the existing literature, this paper presents an overview of how the Internet and the ICT and related research communities can help tackle environmental challenges in developing countries. Study of the Topology Mismatch Problem in Peer-to-Peer Networks
The advantages of peer-to-peer (P2P) technology are innumerable when compared to other systems like Distributed Messaging System, Client-Server model, Cloud based systems. The vital advantages are not limited to high scalability and low cost. On the other hand the p2p system suffers from a bottle-neck problem caused by topology mismatch. Topology mismatch occurs in an unstructured peer-to-peer (P2P) network when the peers participating in the communication choose their neighbors in random fashion, such that the resultant P2P network mismatches its underlying physical network, resulting in a lengthy communication between the peers and redundant network traffics generated in the underlying network[1] However, most P2P system performance suffers from the mismatch between the overlays topology and the underlying physical network topology, causing a large volume of redundant traffic in the Internet slowing the performance. This paper surveys the P2P topology mismatch problems and the solutions adapted for different applications
A novel scalable hybrid architecture for MMOG
We present a novel MMOG Hybrid P2P architecture and detail its key components, topology and protocols. We highlight the main components which lie at the heart of the proposed solution, and their roles, and describe the methods of tackling the key scenarios which are faced by the architecture during gameplay. For each role, we discuss the interactions that exist between them and describe the protocols that will be used for inter-role communication to perform the atomic actions necessary for maintaining the consistency and responsiveness of an MMOG such as peer addition, peer removal, group transfer, object change persistency and many more. We conclude the chapter with a comparison of the architecture against several existing P2P MMOG frameworks, discussing the differences which exist between them and how the novel Hybrid-P2P architecture we propose aims to address their flaws
