    Cut Size Statistics of Graph Bisection Heuristics

    We investigate the statistical properties of cut sizes generated by heuristic algorithms which solve approximately the graph bisection problem. On an ensemble of sparse random graphs, we find empirically that the distribution of the cut sizes found by ``local'' algorithms becomes peaked as the number of vertices in the graphs becomes large. Evidence is given that this distribution tends towards a Gaussian whose mean and variance scales linearly with the number of vertices of the graphs. Given the distribution of cut sizes associated with each heuristic, we provide a ranking procedure which takes into account both the quality of the solutions and the speed of the algorithms.     Online Bivariate Outlier Detection in Final Test Using Kernel Density Estimation

    In parametric IC testing, outlier detection is applied to filter out potential unreliable devices. Most outlier detection methods are used in an offline setting and hence are not applicable to Final Test, where immediate pass/fail decisions are required. Therefore, we developed a new bivariate online outlier detection method that is applicable to Final Test without making assumptions about a specific form of relations between two test parameters. An acceptance region is constructed using kernel density estimation. We use a grid discretization in order to enable a fast outlier decision. After each accepted device the grid is updated, hence the method is able to adapt to shifting measurements

    Integrated circuit outlier identification by multiple parameter correlation

    Semiconductor manufacturers must ensure that chips conform to their specifications before they are shipped to customers. This is achieved by testing various parameters of a chip to determine whether it is defective or not. Separating defective chips from fault-free ones is relatively straightforward for functional or other Boolean tests that produce a go/no-go type of result. However, making this distinction is extremely challenging for parametric tests. Owing to continuous distributions of parameters, any pass/fail threshold results in yield loss and/or test escapes. The continuous advances in process technology, increased process variations and inaccurate fault models all make this even worse. The pass/fail thresholds for such tests are usually set using prior experience or by a combination of visual inspection and engineering judgment. Many chips have parameters that exceed certain thresholds but pass Boolean tests. Owing to the imperfect nature of tests, to determine whether these chips (called "outliers") are indeed defective is nontrivial. To avoid wasted investment in packaging or further testing it is important to screen defective chips early in a test flow. Moreover, if seemingly strange behavior of outlier chips can be explained with the help of certain process parameters or by correlating additional test data, such chips can be retained in the test flow before they are proved to be fatally flawed. In this research, we investigate several methods to identify true outliers (defective chips, or chips that lead to functional failure) from apparent outliers (seemingly defective, but fault-free chips). The outlier identification methods in this research primarily rely on wafer-level spatial correlation, but also use additional test parameters. These methods are evaluated and validated using industrial test data. The potential of these methods to reduce burn-in is discussed

    Design of a High-Speed Architecture for Stabilization of Video Captured Under Non-Uniform Lighting Conditions

    Video captured in shaky conditions may lead to vibrations. A robust algorithm to immobilize the video by compensating for the vibrations from physical settings of the camera is presented in this dissertation. A very high performance hardware architecture on Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) technology is also developed for the implementation of the stabilization system. Stabilization of video sequences captured under non-uniform lighting conditions begins with a nonlinear enhancement process. This improves the visibility of the scene captured from physical sensing devices which have limited dynamic range. This physical limitation causes the saturated region of the image to shadow out the rest of the scene. It is therefore desirable to bring back a more uniform scene which eliminates the shadows to a certain extent. Stabilization of video requires the estimation of global motion parameters. By obtaining reliable background motion, the video can be spatially transformed to the reference sequence thereby eliminating the unintended motion of the camera. A reflectance-illuminance model for video enhancement is used in this research work to improve the visibility and quality of the scene. With fast color space conversion, the computational complexity is reduced to a minimum. The basic video stabilization model is formulated and configured for hardware implementation. Such a model involves evaluation of reliable features for tracking, motion estimation, and affine transformation to map the display coordinates of a stabilized sequence. The multiplications, divisions and exponentiations are replaced by simple arithmetic and logic operations using improved log-domain computations in the hardware modules. On Xilinx\u27s Virtex II 2V8000-5 FPGA platform, the prototype system consumes 59% logic slices, 30% flip-flops, 34% lookup tables, 35% embedded RAMs and two ZBT frame buffers. The system is capable of rendering 180.9 million pixels per second (mpps) and consumes approximately 30.6 watts of power at 1.5 volts. With a 1024×1024 frame, the throughput is equivalent to 172 frames per second (fps). Future work will optimize the performance-resource trade-off to meet the specific needs of the applications. It further extends the model for extraction and tracking of moving objects as our model inherently encapsulates the attributes of spatial distortion and motion prediction to reduce complexity. With these parameters to narrow down the processing range, it is possible to achieve a minimum of 20 fps on desktop computers with Intel Core 2 Duo or Quad Core CPUs and 2GB DDR2 memory without a dedicated hardware

    StringENT test suite: ENT battery revisited for efficient P value computation

    Random numbers play a key role in a wide variety of applications, ranging from mathematical simulation to cryptography. Generating random or pseudo-random numbers is not an easy task, especially when hardware, time and energy constraints are considered. In order to assess whether generators behave in a random fashion, there are several statistical test batteries. ENT is one of the simplest and most popular, at least in part due to its efficacy and speed. Nonetheless, only one of the tests of this suite provides a p value, which is the most useful and standard way to determine whether the randomness hypothesis holds, for a certain significance level. As a consequence of this, rather arbitrary and at times misleading bounds are set in order to decide which intervals are acceptable for its results. This paper introduces an extension of the battery, named StringENT, which, while sticking to the fast speed that makes ENT popular and useful, still succeeds in providing p values with which sound decisions can be made about the randomness of a sequence.     On generalized adaptive neural filter

    Linear filters have historically been used in the past as the most useful tools for suppressing noise in signal processing. It has been shown that the optimal filter which minimizes the mean square error (MSE) between the filter output and the desired output is a linear filter provided that the noise is additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN). However, in most signal processing applications, the noise in the channel through which a signal is transmitted is not AWGN; it is not stationary, and it may have unknown characteristics. To overcome the shortcomings of linear filters, nonlinear filters ranging from the median filters to stack filters have been developed. They have been successfully used in a number of applications, such as enhancing the signal-to-noise ratio of the telecommunication receivers, modeling the human vocal tract to synthesize speech in speech processing, and separating out the maternal and fetal electrocardiogram signals to diagnose prenatal ailments. In particular, stack filters have been shown to provide robust noise suppression, and are easily implementable in hardware, but configuring an optimal stack filter remains a challenge. This dissertation takes on this challenge by extending stack filters to a new class of nonlinear adaptive filters called generalized adaptive neural filters (GANFs). The objective of this work is to investigate their performance in terms of the mean absolute error criterion, to evaluate and predict the generalization of various discriminant functions employed for GANFs, and to address issues regarding their applications and implementation. It is shown that GANFs not only extend the class of stack filters, but also have better performance in terms of suppressing non-additive white Gaussian noise. Several results are drawn from the theoretical and experimental work: stack filters can be adaptively configured by neural networks; GANFs encompass a large class of nonlinear sliding-window filters which include stack filters; the mean absolute error (MAE) of the optimal GANF is upper-bounded by that of the optimal stack filter; a suitable class of discriminant functions can be determined before a training scheme is executed; VC dimension (VCdim) theory can be applied to determine the number of training samples; the algorithm presented in configuring GANFs is effective and robust
