French And Spanish In Contact: Code-Switching Among Spanish Immigrants In France

    Get PDF
This sociolinguistic study of the bilingual speech of Spanish immigrants in Toulouse, France focuses on the phenomenon of code-switching (CS). The analysis of the data showed that most CS was situational, rather than metaphorical. Three types of CS were found: insertion, alternation, and congruent lexicalization. Their examination revealed that the insertion of French words was more common than of Spanish items, the alternation was most frequent in repetitions, and the congruent lexicalization was present at the grammatical and structural level. The speech of the individual participants was also analyzed, and it was found that the sociological aspects greatly affected the use of CS. Finally, the analysis of the frequency effects was conducted revealing that the topic of the nouns influenced the language in which the nouns were used. The results proved that it is impossible to conduct a reliable grammatical analysis without including the sociolinguistic aspects

Forest landscapes and global change. New frontiers in management, conservation and restoration. Proceedings of the IUFRO Landscape Ecology Working Group International Conference

    Get PDF
This volume contains the contributions of numerous participants at the IUFRO Landscape Ecology Working Group International Conference, which took place in Bragança, Portugal, from 21 to 24 of September 2010. The conference was dedicated to the theme Forest Landscapes and Global Change - New Frontiers in Management, Conservation and Restoration. The 128 papers included in this book follow the structure and topics of the conference. Sections 1 to 8 include papers relative to presentations in 18 thematic oral and two poster sessions. Section 9 is devoted to a wide-range of landscape ecology fields covered in the 12 symposia of the conference. The Proceedings of the IUFRO Landscape Ecology Working Group International Conference register the growth of scientific interest in forest landscape patterns and processes, and the recognition of the role of landscape ecology in the advancement of science and management, particularly within the context of emerging physical, social and political drivers of change, which influence forest systems and the services they provide. We believe that these papers, together with the presentations and debate which took place during the IUFRO Landscape Ecology Working Group International Conference – Bragança 2010, will definitively contribute to the advancement of landscape ecology and science in general. For their additional effort and commitment, we thank all the participants in the conference for leaving this record of their work, thoughts and science

GIS and land use in texcoco municipality, Mexico:: contrasting local and official understandings

Planning design in a 'top down' and technocratic way has not always been relevant to agricultural development. Decision-making on land use in Mexico is a complex process involving environmental, socio-economic and cultural issues. Land use at 'local level’ is associated with access by individuals or groups to diverse resource bases. Fundamental issues for planning land use in these complex environments revolve around diversity of land resource, access to resources, social organisation, institutions for management of resources and the perceptions of the people about the resources and the associated decision-making process at grassroots. In this context, understandings of the complex set of resources available and the opportunities of land users to make a living in agriculture and its associated decision-making process by individuals or groups is essential. This study has undertaken the task of analysing information produced in a municipality and ejidos in central Mexico using participatory methods for collection of information relevant for planning and the production of maps of resources at municipality and ejido level using participatory GIS. Participatory mapping of resources at municipality and ejido level not only allowed the mapping of resources according to the perceptions of the people, but also made the GIS accessible to people on the ground; they were able to make their own maps for understanding land use change and as a base for land use planning. This information was compared with maps produced either by official government agencies or from official statistics. In the former case the approach taken for map production was to use as a basis standard technical procedures for resources eg soil/land use classifications. This contrasted with the 'practical' approach adopted by the ejidatarios. In both cases the accuracy and reliability of the official maps and 'statistics' was open to question. Decision-making for land use based on information from the 'ground' emerges as an adaptive process, depending on government policie

Race, culture and social work education in the South African interregnum : a contextual analysis of attitudes and practice in the period 1990-1994

    Get PDF
Summary in English.|Bibliography: leaves 329-360.Welfare services generally were racially segregated and highly unequal, being heavily skewed towards the needs of the white population. Such welfare policies and service patterns were increasingly justified in ideological terms by reference to a specific form of cultural relativism rather than overt racist argument. With the dramatic political changes heralded by the unbanning of anti-apartheid political organisations in 1990 South Africa entered an uncertain interregnum period in which the existing government lacked legitimacy but a new democratic government was not yet in place. This period, up to the general election in 1994, represented a ""Prague spring"" in which open debate and argument regarding future social policy and government flourished. It was therefore a time of both great excitement and hope for most South Africans yet anxiety for those who were identified with the old order. It was within this cntext that this study explored, by means of a national survey, the views and attitudes of social work educators in all tertiary institutions in South Africa towards issues of culture, race and transformation
