Controlling a remotely located Robot using Hand Gestures in real time: A DSP implementation
Telepresence is a necessity for present time as we can't reach everywhere and
also it is useful in saving human life at dangerous places. A robot, which
could be controlled from a distant location, can solve these problems. This
could be via communication waves or networking methods. Also controlling should
be in real time and smooth so that it can actuate on every minor signal in an
effective way. This paper discusses a method to control a robot over the
network from a distant location. The robot was controlled by hand gestures
which were captured by the live camera. A DSP board TMS320DM642EVM was used to
implement image pre-processing and fastening the whole system. PCA was used for
gesture classification and robot actuation was done according to predefined
procedures. Classification information was sent over the network in the
experiment. This method is robust and could be used to control any kind of
robot over distance
Unconventional TV Detection using Mobile Devices
Recent studies show that the TV viewing experience is changing giving the
rise of trends like "multi-screen viewing" and "connected viewers". These
trends describe TV viewers that use mobile devices (e.g. tablets and smart
phones) while watching TV. In this paper, we exploit the context information
available from the ubiquitous mobile devices to detect the presence of TVs and
track the media being viewed. Our approach leverages the array of sensors
available in modern mobile devices, e.g. cameras and microphones, to detect the
location of TV sets, their state (ON or OFF), and the channels they are
currently tuned to. We present the feasibility of the proposed sensing
technique using our implementation on Android phones with different realistic
scenarios. Our results show that in a controlled environment a detection
accuracy of 0.978 F-measure could be achieved.Comment: 4 pages, 14 figure

Commercialisation of precision agriculture technologies in the macadamia industry
A prototype vision-based yield monitor has been developed for the macadamia industry. The system estimates yield for individual trees by detecting nuts and their harvested location. The technology was developed by the National Centre for Engineering in Agriculture, University of Southern Queensland for the purpose of reducing labour and costs in varietal assessment trials where yield for individual trees are required to be measured to indicate tree performance. The project was commissioned by Horticulture Australia Limited
