This descriptive study examined undiagnosed depression in the elderly and how it affects the elderly from retaining healthcare education. It is estimated by 2029, 20% of the United States population will be age 65 and older (Colby & Ortman, 2014). Depression in the elderly who have chronic diseases, is estimated to be undiagnosed up to 40% (Chaoyang et al., 2009). A hallmark symptom of depression is the inability to concentrate. It is unknown if undiagnosed depression will affect the older adult from retaining pertinent healthcare education. The 30 point Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) was administered to a class of elderly individuals, aged 65 years and older. A nutrition class was subsequently taught to the participants. Following the nutrition class, a quiz on the class material was administered to measure retention of the nutritional information. The aim of the study was to determine if higher scores on the GDS, or a positive screening for the risk of depression, would result in lower scores on the nutrition quiz. The scores analyzed as a two tailed Person\u27s correlation, were discovered to be statistically significant at the 0.01 level. The sigma of depression in the setting site contributed to a small sample size. This project has shown the need for increased screening for the risk of depression in the elderly as the elderly cannot retain healthcare education if they are depressed

Not all elderly people live with their families, there are also many elderly people who do not live in the same place as their families, there are also elderly people who live in special care homes for the elderly or nursing homes. In old age, the activities that elderly people can do decrease because as a person gets older, there will be changes in their physical and psychological condition which will also decrease. Happiness is a need for everyone, someone will do various things to achieve a level of happiness that is in accordance with their respective standards of living. Every person must have their own way to achieve happiness. The reduced activity and decline in physical function experienced by the elderly will have an impact on the happiness felt by the elderly, especially the elderly who live in nursing homes. This research focuses on the happiness of elderly people in nursing homes, with the subjects being 6 elderly people who live at Panti Griya Asih Lawang. This research uses a qualitative approach method with descriptive research type. The results of this research are that the happiness felt by the elderly while in a nursing home is the result of a sense of acceptance by the elderly with your life so far. The happiness felt by the elderly is also derived from a sense of gratitude and sincerity with everything they get at the Griya Asih Lawang home

Entering old age, a person will experience physical and psychological setbacks, which results in an older person experiencing increased stress quickly, which is caused by external and internal factors. Place of residence and family is one of the causes of increased stress levels in the elderly. Community service aims to provide information and knowledge to the elderly about how to determine the stress level experienced by the elderly who do not live at home with their families. The provision of information and knowledge will be carried out on March 14-19, 2022. The research variable is stress levels in the elderly who do not live at home with their families. The participants were 26 older people. One student assisted them. Using the lecture method, discussion/question and answer. Leaflet media, materials with LCD media and laptops. The results of interviews and filling out questionnaires by the elderly who did not live at home with their families found 26 respondents, indicating that most of the respondents experienced moderate stress, as many as 65% of respondents, almost half of the respondents experienced mild stress, as many as 35% of respondents. The level of stress in the elderly who do not live at home with their family can be stress-free in a way; the elderly can recognize and understand how to prevent stress by participating in activities facilitated by the village or puskesmas at the elderly Posyandu by meeting other older people and participating in elderly gymnastics

Discouraged Workers? Job Search Outcomes of Older Workers

    Get PDF
Many have suggested we adopt policies that explicitly encourage the elderly to work. Behind this suggestion is the assumption that if an older person desires a job, one will be found; however, little is known about the extent to which this is true, and in the Health and Retirement Study, many more respondents say they expect to work after retirement than actually undertake work. This raises an important question: To what extent can the elderly readily find suitable jobs? In the context of a theoretical job search model, we examine the decision to search for a job and the probability of transitioning to employment using a large sample of non-workers from the Health and Retirement Study. The effects of both supply-side factors (individual characteristics) and demand-side factors (local labor market conditions) are estimated. We find employment transition rates are relatively low for older searchers: only half of older searchers successfully attain jobs. We examine various explanations for this result, including variation in search intensity, reservation wages, and the possibility of intervening health shocks. We conclude that about 13% of older job searchers becomes a discouraged worker in the sense of being willing to work at the prevailing wage, but unable to find a job.

Municipal health expectancy in Japan: decreased healthy longevity of older people in socioeconomically disadvantaged areas

BACKGROUND: Little is known about small-area variation in healthy longevity of older people and its socioeconomic correlates. This study aimed to estimate health expectancy at 65 years (HE65) at the municipal level in Japan, and to examine its relation to area socio-demographic conditions. METHODS: HE65 of municipalities (N = 3361) across Japan was estimated by a linear regression formula with life expectancy at 65 years and the prevalence of those certificated as needing nursing care. The relation between HE65 and area socio-demographic indicators was examined using correlation coefficients. RESULTS: The estimated HE65 (years) ranged from 13.13 to 17.39 for men and from 14.84 to 20.53 for women. HE65 was significantly positively correlated with the proportion of elderly and per capita income, and negatively correlated with the percentage of households of a single elderly person, divorce rate, and unemployment rate. These relations were stronger in large municipalities (with a population of more than 100,000) than in small and medium-size municipalities. CONCLUSION: A decrease in healthy longevity of older people was associated with a higher percentage of households of a single elderly person and divorce rate, and lower socioeconomic conditions. This study suggests that older people in urban areas are susceptible to socio-demographic factors, and a social support network for older people living in socioeconomically disadvantaged conditions should be encouraged

Fall Concerns among Carers of an Older Person

Older people fall at least once a year, resulting in many devastating complications that affect the older person and the carers. Many carers are concerned that the older person will fall. Three hundred ninety carers of an older person participate in this study. The study found that the carers have a high level of fall concern. The level of concern was significantly associated with the demographic variables of the older person and the level of depression, stress, anxiety, and strain. Hence, there is a dire need for a fall prevention programme and educational program for the carers. Keywords: fall; carers; fall concerns; elderly. eISSN: 2398-4287 © 2022. The Authors. The population of the elderly is raising in the improved countries with the death age becoming later in life due to the improvement of contemporary therapy approaches and socio‐economic and cultural levels. Most older people with major disability of recent onset have the potential to benefit from geriatric rehabilitation. Rehabilitation for older people should have specific goals. Rehabilitation of elderly people involves an active process, delivered through a coordinated multidisciplinary team approach, aiming to improve function and enable subjects to live their lives to the whole potential. The major goal of rehabilitation programs for older people is to assist them to manage personal activities of daily living without the assistance of another person. Occupational therapy facilitates optimal occupational performance and community participation across the full spectrum of ability. In this chapter, there is information on the principles of occupational rehabilitation for elderly people and evaluation and different therapy approaches in occupational therapy

    Pain Management in Older Persons

Pain is a common symptom in the elderly and it is problematic and distressful especially if the polder person is dependent on a caregiver. Pain keeps the sufferer uncomfortable and can affect the person from carrying out daily activities and tasks especially activities of daily living. Pain in the older person may be acute or chronic. Some of the causes of pain in the elderly are neuralgia, musculoskeletal dysfunction especially osteoarthritis, emotional and mental problems, cancer and several other causes. The assessment of pain in the elderly is done using validated pain assessment tools such as the visual analogue scale, verbal rating scales, numeric rating scales, McGill pain assessment questionnaire, pain attitudes, brief pain inventory, and geriatric pain measure. Management of pain in older persons involves non-pharmacological and pharmacological methods. There are some barriers and challenges of pain management in the elderly and also consequences when pain is not properly managed or not managed at all in an older person

Fall-related accident and injury are a standout among the most widely recognized motivations to reason for death and hospitalization among elderly. Falls among older people become a major problem facing hospitals and nursing homes. An enhanced fall detection system is proposed for elderly person monitoring that is based on-body sensor. Various fall-detection solutions have been previously proposed to create a reliable surveillance system for elderly people with high requirements on accuracy. In this paper, an enhanced fall detection system is proposed for elderly person monitoring that is based on smart sensors worn on the body and operating through long distance as well as consumer home networks. The principle behind this work is the detection of changes in the motion and position using the sensor which tracks the acceleration changes in three orthogonal directions. By using MEM's accelerometer sensor is used for determining exact angle of an elderly person with the help of signal magnitude vector (SMV). When the fall is detected the GPS locates the exact fall location and GSM modem is used to transmit the message to the mobile phone of caretakers/relatives of the fallen subjects at that time also send their latitude and longitude value by using GPS. This alert message helps to provide immediate assistance and treatment
