Efficient channel estimation using TCH codes
In this paper, we consider the use of TCH codes to perform channel estimation in an OFDM system, using either data multiplexed pilots or superimposed pilots over the data. TCH codes possess several properties that allow us to use them efficiently in various applications which includes channel estimation, as we address in this paper. With this objective, several performance results were obtained through simulations which allowed the evaluation of the impact of different pilot power levels and modulations, as well as the comparison of TCH against other conventional pilots. In order to cope with the interference between pilots and data, an iterative receiver with interference suppression was employed for the superimposed pilots method.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio
Channel estimation with TCH codes for machine-type communications
TCH codes possess several properties that allow us to use them efficiently in
various applications. One of these applications is channel estimation and, in this
dissertation, it is studied the performance of TCH codes to estimate the channel in
an Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing system, regarding Machine-Type
Communications. Bit error rate performance results were obtained by executing
simulations that allowed the evaluation of the impact of using two different pilot
techniques, such as data multiplexed and implicit pilots, different pilot power levels
and different modulations, QPSK and 64-QAM. Pilots based on TCH codes are
also compared with other conventional pilots. Results show that TCH codes have
a very positive and reliable performance.
Joint timing synchronization and channel estimation is also performed using different sparse based approaches, such as Orthogonal Matching Pursuit, L1-
regularized and Iterative Reweighted L1. TCH codes are compared against different
sequence types, namely Zadoff-Chu sequences and pseudorandom codewords, and
variations in the pilot size, the channel length and the observation window size are
executed in order to understand their effects. Results ultimately illustrate that
TCH codes can be effectively used in joint channel estimation and synchronization,
managing to withstand worst simulation conditions better than its counterparts.
It is also proven that compressed sensing can successfully be utilized in joint synchronization and channel estimation, an area where its use has not been very
explored.
Study and implementation of a low complexity receiver using TCH codes
The use of coding in telecommunications systems reveals to be a technique with an essential
contribution to the improvement of the recovery of transmitted signals. Depending on the
circumstances to which a signal is subjected at transmission, by recurring to coding, it is
possible to attenuate the unfavorable effects that result from this process, obtaining a signal
with superior quality in comparison with a scenario where the presence of coding is absent.
This study aims to test the feasibility of a high-rate wireless communications system using
TCH codes being applied to an OFDM signal, subjected to noise components introduced by a
wireless AWGN channel, considering a free path propagation model. Due to their correlation
properties, the use of TCH codes reveals to be adequate since they allow the same codewords
to be used to realize both error correction and channel estimation, mitigating the channels
effects, leading to the realization of a receiver with lower complexity.
With the intent of performing a qualitative analysis to this system, a simple simulation is
executed in MATLAB where an OFDM signal is generated, being therefore applied various
TCH codes and, through channel estimation, obtain the BER for their respective code lengths
and, consequently, coding gains.
The results were obtained for the modulation indexes of 16, 64 and 256-QAM. These
demonstrate that the implementation of TCH codes is a viable option to reduce the rate of
recovered errors, enabling the reception of a signal with better reliability, especially for higher
Design of tch-type sequences for communications
This thesis deals with the design of a class of cyclic codes inspired by TCH codewords.
Since TCH codes are linked to finite fields the fundamental concepts and facts about abstract
algebra, namely group theory and number theory, constitute the first part of the thesis.
By exploring group geometric properties and identifying an equivalence between some operations
on codes and the symmetries of the dihedral group we were able to simplify the generation
of codewords thus saving on the necessary number of computations. Moreover, we
also presented an algebraic method to obtain binary generalized TCH codewords of length
N = 2k, k = 1,2, . . . , 16. By exploring Zech logarithm’s properties as well as a group theoretic
isomorphism we developed a method that is both faster and less complex than what was
proposed before. In addition, it is valid for all relevant cases relating the codeword length N
and not only those resulting from N = p
Low-complexity channel codes for reliable molecular communication via diffusion
It is envisioned that healthcare systems of the future will be revolutionized with the development and integration of body-centric networks into future generations of communication systems, giving rise to the so-called “Internet of Bio-nano things”. Molecular communications (MC) emerge as the most promising way of transmitting information for in-body communications. One of the biggest challenges is how to minimize the effects of environmental noise and reduce the inter-symbol interference (ISI) which in an MC via diffusion scenario can be very high. To address this problem, channel coding is one of the most promising techniques. In this paper, we study the effects of different channel codes integrated into MC systems. We provide a study of Tomlinson, Cercas, Hughes (TCH) codes as a new attractive approach for the MC environment due to the codeword properties which enable simplified detection. Simulation results show that TCH codes are more effective for these scenarios when compared to other existing alternatives, without introducing too much complexity or processing power into the system. Furthermore, an experimental proof-of-concept macroscale test bed is described, which uses pH as the information carrier, and which demonstrates that the proposed TCH codes can improve the reliability in this type of communication channel.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Molecular communications techniques for the internet of bio-nano things
The ”Internet of Bio-Nano Things” (IoBNT) is a new networking paradigm defined as the
interconnection of nanoscale devices. IoBNT is a revolutionizing concept that will likely
enable a wide range of applications, in particular, it is envisioned that healthcare systems
will be transformed with the development and integration of body-centric networks into
future generations of communication systems. Within this context, molecular communications
(MC) emerge as the most promising way of transmitting information for in-body
communications, due to being inherently biocompatible, energy-efficient, and robust in
physiological conditions.
One of the biggest challenges is how to minimize the effects of environmental noise
and reduce intersymbol interference (ISI) which can be very high in an MC via diffusion
scenario. Analogous to traditional communications, channel coding is one of the most
promising types of techniques for addressing this problem. This work is based on the
study and evaluation of novel energy efficient and low complexity coding, modulation and
detection schemes for MC. With a special focus on the implementation of Tomlinson,
Cercas, Hughes (TCH) codes as a new attractive approach for the MC environment,
due to the particular codeword properties which enable simplified detection. Simulation
results show that TCH codes are more effective for these scenarios when compared to
other existing alternatives, without introducing too much complexity or processing power
into the system.
Furthermore, an experimental macroscale proof-of-concept is described, which uses pH
as the information carrier and demonstrates that the proposed TCH codes can improve
the reliability in this type of communication channel.
Neste contexto, as comunicações moleculares (CM)
