    Towards Precise Positioning and Movement of UAVs for Near-Wall Tasks in GNSS-Denied Environments

    Abstract: UAVs often perform tasks that require flying close to walls or structures and in environments where a satellite-based location is not possible. Flying close to solid bodies implies a higher risk of collisions, thus requiring an increase in the precision of the measurement and control of the UAV’s position. The aerodynamic distortions generated by nearby walls or other objects are also relevant, making the control more complex and further placing demands on the positioning system. Performing wall-related tasks implies flying very close to the wall and, in some cases, even touching it. This work presents a Near-Wall Positioning System (NWPS) based on the combination of an Ultra-wideband (UWB) solution and LIDAR-based range finders. This NWPS has been developed and tested to allow precise positioning and orientation of a multirotor UAV relative to a wall when performing tasks near it.     A Secure Real-time Multimedia Streaming through Robust and Lightweight AES Encryption in UAV Networks for Operational Scenarios in Military Domain

Data is captured from drones equipped with microphone arrays and cameras. This is performed by exploiting acoustic event analysis, video tracking, and recognition, performed on a ground station. All the communications are delivered in a secure data channel. Integrity and secrecy of the sensitive data acquired by drones must be guaranteed until the data is delivered in real-time from UAVs to the destination node. A possible data exploit may cause critical problems if the data is intercepted by malicious attackers. Being the drones equipped with low energy consuming devices with low computational power, like single-board-computers, a real-time lightweight application-level AES encryption, in addition to the MAC encryption of the wireless communication channel, has been considered. In the experiment, the encryption and decryption process has been optimized, even under adverse transmission conditions ensuring continuous data encryption even if some packets are lost or the connection is repeatedly dropped and reestablished

    Impact of UAV Hardware Options on Bridge Inspection Mission Capabilities

    Uncrewed Aerial Vehicles (UAV) constitute a rapidly evolving technology field that is becoming more accessible and capable of supplementing, expanding, and even replacing some traditionally manual bridge inspections. Given the classification of the bridge inspection types as initial, routine, in-depth, damage, special, and fracture critical members, specific UAV mission requirements can be developed, and their suitability for UAV application examined. Results of a review of 23 applications of UAVs in bridge inspections indicate that mission sensor and payload needs dictate the UAV configuration and size, resulting in quadcopter configurations being most suitable for visual camera inspections (43% of visual inspections use quadcopters), and hexa- and octocopter configurations being more suitable for higher payload hyperspectral, multispectral, and Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) inspections (13%). In addition, the number of motors and size of the aircraft are the primary drivers in the cost of the vehicle. 75% of vehicles rely on GPS for navigation, and none of them are capable of contact inspections. Factors that limit the use of UAVs in bridge inspections include the UAV endurance, the capability of navigation in GPS deprived environments, the stability in confined spaces in close proximity to structural elements, and the cost. Current research trends in UAV technologies address some of these limitations, such as obstacle detection and avoidance methods, autonomous flight path planning and optimization, and UAV hardware optimization for specific mission requirements

    Aerial Robotics for Inspection and Maintenance

    Aerial robots with perception, navigation, and manipulation capabilities are extending the range of applications of drones, allowing the integration of different sensor devices and robotic manipulators to perform inspection and maintenance operations on infrastructures such as power lines, bridges, viaducts, or walls, involving typically physical interactions on flight. New research and technological challenges arise from applications demanding the benefits of aerial robots, particularly in outdoor environments.     Virtual Omnidirectional Perception for Downwash Prediction within a Team of Nano Multirotors Flying in Close Proximity

    Teams of flying robots can be used for inspection, delivery, and construction tasks, in which they might be required to fly very close to each other. In such close-proximity cases, nonlinear aerodynamic effects can cause catastrophic crashes, necessitating each robots' awareness of the surrounding. Existing approaches rely on multiple, expensive or heavy perception sensors. Such perception methods are impractical to use on nano multirotors that are constrained with respect to weight, computation, and price. Instead, we propose to use the often ignored yaw degree-of-freedom of multirotors to spin a single, cheap and lightweight monocular camera at a high angular rate for omnidirectional awareness of the neighboring robots. We provide a dataset collected with real-world physical flights as well as with 3D-rendered scenes and compare two existing learning-based methods in different settings with respect to success rate, relative position estimation, and downwash prediction accuracy. We demonstrate that our proposed spinning camera is capable of predicting the presence of aerodynamic downwash with an F1F_1 score of over 80% in a challenging swapping task

    UAV-Enabled Surface and Subsurface Characterization for Post-Earthquake Geotechnical Reconnaissance

    Major earthquakes continue to cause significant damage to infrastructure systems and the loss of life (e.g. 2016 Kaikoura, New Zealand; 2016 Muisne, Ecuador; 2015 Gorkha, Nepal). Following an earthquake, costly human-led reconnaissance studies are conducted to document structural or geotechnical damage and to collect perishable field data. Such efforts are faced with many daunting challenges including safety, resource limitations, and inaccessibility of sites. Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) represent a transformative tool for mitigating the effects of these challenges and generating spatially distributed and overall higher quality data compared to current manual approaches. UAVs enable multi-sensor data collection and offer a computational decision-making platform that could significantly influence post-earthquake reconnaissance approaches. As demonstrated in this research, UAVs can be used to document earthquake-affected geosystems by creating 3D geometric models of target sites, generate 2D and 3D imagery outputs to perform geomechanical assessments of exposed rock masses, and characterize subsurface field conditions using techniques such as in situ seismic surface wave testing. UAV-camera systems were used to collect images of geotechnical sites to model their 3D geometry using Structure-from-Motion (SfM). Key examples of lessons learned from applying UAV-based SfM to reconnaissance of earthquake-affected sites are presented. The results of 3D modeling and the input imagery were used to assess the mechanical properties of landslides and rock masses. An automatic and semi-automatic 2D fracture detection method was developed and integrated with a 3D, SfM, imaging framework. A UAV was then integrated with seismic surface wave testing to estimate the shear wave velocity of the subsurface materials, which is a critical input parameter in seismic response of geosystems. The UAV was outfitted with a payload release system to autonomously deliver an impulsive seismic source to the ground surface for multichannel analysis of surface waves (MASW) tests.     Deployment of contact-based ultrasonic thickness measurements using over-actuated UAVs

    Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are increasingly being utilized for the structural health assessment of on and off-shore structures. Visual inspection is the usual methodology for acquiring data from these structures, but there is often a need for contact based structural measurements, for example to assess local thickness on corroding structures. Conventional UAV platform dynamics have not traditionally allowed for such contact measurements. The limited dynamic control afforded by fixed plane rotor UAVs means that forward thrust (to apply contact forces for surface transduction) is only possible by tilting the whole platform, thus taking the UAV into a non-stationary state and limiting positional accuracy. An over-actuated UAV platform (with fully vectored thrust capability) may provide the required contact force for such thickness measurements whilst maintaining stable hovering next to the structure. The authors herein present a contact based ultrasonic thickness measurement technique, whereby an ultrasonic wheel probe deployed from a UAV was used to make single point and scanned measurements across a surface to provide a set of local thickness measurements. A 5 MHz, dry-coupled, dual-element, ultrasonic wheel probe is used to measure the thickness of an aluminum sample plate with thicknesses of 8.2 mm, 4.5 mm and 3.2 mm, and a precision stepped calibration block with size from 31.5 mm to 17.5 mm in steps of 1 mm, then steps of 0.1 mm down to 16.5 mm over a total length of 500 mm. The thickness resolution obtainable from the ultrasonic wheel probe was typically 0.1 mm, and the positional accuracy attained from the over-actuated deployment platform was 16.6 mm when performing single point measurements
