    An Interferometric SAR Satellite Mission

    The paper provides a critical review of the achievements in SAR interferometry from the ERS mission as well as from the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission SRTM. It describes the development from the original idea of the Interferometric Cartwheel to the concept of a formation flight of identical and active SAR satellites. From the experience gained from ERS and SRTM interferometric data processing as well as from the analysis of the Cartwheel concept a list of mission requirements has been set up. The most demanding one is the autonomous configuration flight of a tight x-band constellation, where the satellites fly as close as up to 30 m with a dead-band of +/- 10 m. The guidance, navigation and control considerations come to the conclusion that such a mission is feasible

    Sparsity-driven coupled imaging and autofocusing for interferometric SAR

    In this thesis, we present a new joint image enhancement and reconstruction method and a software processing tool for SAR Interferometry. First, we propose a sparsity-driven method for coupled image formation and autofocusing based on multi-channel data collected in interferometric synthetic aperture radar (IfSAR). Relative phase between SAR images contains valuable information. For example, it can be used to estimate the height of the scene in SAR Interferometry. However, this relative phase could be degraded when independent enhancement methods are used over SAR image pairs. Previously, Ramakrishnan, Ertin, and Moses proposed a coupled multi-channel image enhancement technique, based on a dual descent method, which exhibits better performance in phase preservation compared to independent enhancement methods. Their work involves a coupled optimization formulation that uses a sparsity enforcing penalty term as well as a constraint tying the multichannel images together to preserve the cross-channel information. In addition to independent enhancement, the relative phase between the acquisitions can be degraded due to other factors as well, such as platform location uncertainties, leading to phase errors in the data and defocusing in the formed imagery. The performance of airborne SAR systems can be affected severely by such errors. We ii propose an optimization formulation that combines Ramakrishnan et al.'s coupled IfSAR enhancement method with the sparsity-driven autofocus (SDA) approach of Önhon and Çetin to alleviate the effects of phase errors due to motion errors in the context of IfSAR imaging. Our method solves the joint optimization problem with a Lagrangian optimization method iteratively. In our preliminary experimental analysis, we have obtained results of our method on synthetic SAR images and compared its performance to existing methods. As a second contribution of this thesis, we have developed a software toolbox for end-to-end interferometric SAR processing. This toolbox is capable of performing the fundamental steps of SAR Interferometry Processing. The thesis contains the detailed explanation of the algorithms implemented in the SAR Interferometry Toolbox. Test results are also provided to demonstrate the performance of the Toolbox under different scenarios

    High-accuracy digital elevation model generation and ship monitoring from synthetic aperture radar images: innovative techniques and experimental results.

    In this Thesis several state-of-the-art and innovative techniques for Digital Elevation Model (DEM) generation from Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images are deeply analyzed, with a special focus on the methods which allow the improvement of the accuracy of the DEM product, which is directly related to the geolocation accuracy of geocoded images and is considered as an enabling factor for a large series of civilian and Defence applications. Furthermore, some of the proposed techniques, which are based both on phase and amplitude information, are experimented on real data, i.e. COSMO-SkyMed (CSK) data, assessing the achievable performances compared with the state-of-the-art, and pointing out and quantitatively highlighting the acquisition and processing strategies which would allow to maximize the quality of the results. Moreover, a critical analysis is performed about the main errors affecting the applied techniques, as well as the limitations of the orbital configurations, identifying several complementary techniques which would allow to overcome or mitigate the observed drawbacks. An innovative procedure for on-demand DEM production from CSK SAR data is elaborated and proposed, as well as an auto-validation technique which would enable the validation of the produced DEM also where vertical ground truths are not available. Based on the obtained results and on the consequent critical analysis, several interferometric specifications for new generation SAR satellites are identified. Finally, a literature review is proposed about the main state-of-the-art ship monitoring techniques, considered as one of the main fields of application which takes benefit from SAR data, based on single/multi-platform multi-channel SAR data, with a focus on TanDEM-X (TDX). In particular, in Chapter 1 the main concepts concerning SAR operating principles are introduced and the main characteristics and performances of CSK and TDX satellite systems are described; in Chapter 2 a review is proposed about the state-of-the-art SAR interferometric techniques for DEM generation, analyzing all the relevant processing steps and deepening the study of the main solutions recently proposed in the literature to increase the accuracy of the interferometric processing; in Chapter 3 complementary and innovative techniques respect to the interferometric processing are analyzed to mitigate disadvantages and to improve performances; in Chapter 4 experimental results are presented, obtained in the generation of high accuracy DEM by applying to a dataset of CSK images properly selected state-of-the-art interferometric techniques and innovative methods to improve DEM accuracy, exploring relevant limitations, and pointing out innovative acquisition and processing strategies.     Radar satellite imagery for humanitarian response. Bridging the gap between technology and application

    This work deals with radar satellite imagery and its potential to assist of humanitarian operations. As the number of displaced people annually increases, both hosting countries and relief organizations face new challenges which are often related to unclear situations and lack of information on the number and location of people in need, as well as their environments. It was demonstrated in numerous studies that methods of earth observation can deliver this important information for the management of crises, the organization of refugee camps, and the mapping of environmental resources and natural hazards. However, most of these studies make use of -high-resolution optical imagery, while the role of radar satellites is widely neglected. At the same time, radar sensors have characteristics which make them highly suitable for humanitarian response, their potential to capture images through cloud cover and at night in the first place. Consequently, they potentially allow quicker response in cases of emergencies than optical imagery. This work demonstrates the currently unused potential of radar imagery for the assistance of humanitarian operations by case studies which cover the information needs of specific emergency situations. They are thematically grouped into topics related to population, natural hazards and the environment. Furthermore, the case studies address different levels of scientific objectives: The main intention is the development of innovative techniques of digital image processing and geospatial analysis as an answer on the identified existing research gaps. For this reason, novel approaches are presented on the mapping of refugee camps and urban areas, the allocation of biomass and environmental impact assessment. Secondly, existing methods developed for radar imagery are applied, refined, or adapted to specifically demonstrate their benefit in a humanitarian context. This is done for the monitoring of camp growth, the assessment of damages in cities affected by civil war, and the derivation of areas vulnerable to flooding or sea-surface changes. Lastly, to foster the integration of radar images into existing operational workflows of humanitarian data analysis, technically simple and easily-adaptable approaches are suggested for the mapping of rural areas for vaccination campaigns, the identification of changes within and around refugee camps, and the assessment of suitable locations for groundwater drillings. While the studies provide different levels of technical complexity and novelty, they all show that radar imagery can largely contribute to the provision of a variety of information which is required to make solid decisions and to effectively provide help in humanitarian operations. This work furthermore demonstrates that radar images are more than just an alternative image source for areas heavily affected by cloud cover. In fact, what makes them valuable is their information content regarding the characteristics of surfaces, such as shape, orientation, roughness, size, height, moisture, or conductivity. All these give decisive insights about man-made and natural environments in emergency situations and cannot be provided by optical images Finally, the findings of the case studies are put into a larger context, discussing the observed potential and limitations of the presented approaches. The major challenges are summarized which need be addressed to make radar imagery more useful in humanitarian operations in the context of upcoming technical developments. New radar satellites and technological progress in the fields of machine learning and cloud computing will bring new opportunities. At the same time, this work demonstrated the large need for further research, as well as for the collaboration and transfer of knowledge and experiences between scientists, users and relief workers in the field. It is the first extensive scientific compilation of this topic and the first step for a sustainable integration of radar imagery into operational frameworks to assist humanitarian work and to contribute to a more efficient provision of help to those in need.Die vorliegende Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit bildgebenden Radarsatelliten und ihrem potenziellen Beitrag zur Unterstützung humanitärer Einsätze. Die jährlich zunehmende Zahl an vertriebenen oder geflüchteten Menschen stellt sowohl Aufnahmeländer als auch humanitäre Organisationen vor große Herausforderungen, da sie oft mit unübersichtlichen Verhältnissen konfrontiert sind. Effektives Krisenmanagement, die Planung und Versorgung von Flüchtlingslagern, sowie der Schutz der betroffenen Menschen erfordern jedoch verlässliche Angaben über Anzahl und Aufenthaltsort der Geflüchteten und ihrer natürlichen Umwelt. Die Bereitstellung dieser Informationen durch Satellitenbilder wurde bereits in zahlreichen Studien aufgezeigt. Sie beruhen in der Regel auf hochaufgelösten optischen Aufnahmen, während bildgebende Radarsatelliten bisher kaum Anwendung finden. Dabei verfügen gerade Radarsatelliten über Eigenschaften, die hilfreich für humanitäre Einsätze sein können, allen voran ihre Unabhängigkeit von Bewölkung oder Tageslicht. Dadurch ermöglichen sie in Krisenfällen verglichen mit optischen Satelliten eine schnellere Reaktion. Diese Arbeit zeigt das derzeit noch ungenutzte Potenzial von Radardaten zur Unterstützung humanitärer Arbeit anhand von Fallstudien auf, in denen konkrete Informationen für ausgewählte Krisensituationen bereitgestellt werden. Sie sind in die Themenbereiche Bevölkerung, Naturgefahren und Ressourcen aufgeteilt, adressieren jedoch unterschiedliche wissenschaftliche Ansprüche: Der Hauptfokus der Arbeit liegt auf der Entwicklung von innovativen Methoden zur Verarbeitung von Radarbildern und räumlichen Daten als Antwort auf den identifizierten Forschungsbedarf in diesem Gebiet. Dies wird anhand der Kartierung von Flüchtlingslagern zur Abschätzung ihrer Bevölkerung, zur Bestimmung von Biomasse, sowie zur Ermittlung des Umwelteinflusses von Flüchtlingslagern aufgezeigt. Darüber hinaus werden existierende oder erprobte Ansätze für die Anwendung im humanitären Kontext angepasst oder weiterentwickelt. Dies erfolgt im Rahmen von Fallstudien zur Dynamik von Flüchtlingslagern, zur Ermittlung von Schäden an Gebäuden in Kriegsgebieten, sowie zur Erkennung von Risiken durch Überflutung. Zuletzt soll die Integration von Radardaten in bereits existierende Abläufe oder Arbeitsroutinen in der humanitären Hilfe anhand technisch vergleichsweise einfacher Ansätze vorgestellt und angeregt werden. Als Beispiele dienen hier die radargestützte Kartierung von entlegenen Gebieten zur Unterstützung von Impfkampagnen, die Identifizierung von Veränderungen in Flüchtlingslagern, sowie die Auswahl geeigneter Standorte zur Grundwasserentnahme. Obwohl sich die Fallstudien hinsichtlich ihres Innovations- und Komplexitätsgrads unterscheiden, zeigen sie alle den Mehrwert von Radardaten für die Bereitstellung von Informationen, um schnelle und fundierte Planungsentscheidungen zu unterstützen. Darüber hinaus wird in dieser Arbeit deutlich, dass Radardaten für humanitäre Zwecke mehr als nur eine Alternative in stark bewölkten Gebieten sind. Durch ihren Informationsgehalt zur Beschaffenheit von Oberflächen, beispielsweise hinsichtlich ihrer Rauigkeit, Feuchte, Form, Größe oder Höhe, sind sie optischen Daten überlegen und daher für viele Anwendungsbereiche im Kontext humanitärer Arbeit besonders. Die in den Fallstudien gewonnenen Erkenntnisse werden abschließend vor dem Hintergrund von Vor- und Nachteilen von Radardaten, sowie hinsichtlich zukünftiger Entwicklungen und Herausforderungen diskutiert. So versprechen neue Radarsatelliten und technologische Fortschritte im Bereich der Datenverarbeitung großes Potenzial. Gleichzeitig unterstreicht die Arbeit einen großen Bedarf an weiterer Forschung, sowie an Austausch und Zusammenarbeit zwischen Wissenschaftlern, Anwendern und Einsatzkräften vor Ort. Die vorliegende Arbeit ist die erste umfassende Darstellung und wissenschaftliche Aufarbeitung dieses Themenkomplexes. Sie soll als Grundstein für eine langfristige Integration von Radardaten in operationelle Abläufe dienen, um humanitäre Arbeit zu unterstützen und eine wirksame Hilfe für Menschen in Not ermöglichen

    Clearing the Clouds: Extracting 3D information from amongst the noise

    Advancements permitting the rapid extraction of 3D point clouds from a variety of imaging modalities across the global landscape have provided a vast collection of high fidelity digital surface models. This has created a situation with unprecedented overabundance of 3D observations which greatly outstrips our current capacity to manage and infer actionable information. While years of research have removed some of the manual analysis burden for many tasks, human analysis is still a cornerstone of 3D scene exploitation. This is especially true for complex tasks which necessitate comprehension of scale, texture and contextual learning. In order to ameliorate the interpretation burden and enable scientific discovery from this volume of data, new processing paradigms are necessary to keep pace. With this context, this dissertation advances fundamental and applied research in 3D point cloud data pre-processing and deep learning from a variety of platforms. We show that the representation of 3D point data is often not ideal and sacrifices fidelity, context or scalability. First ground scanning terrestrial LIght Detection And Ranging (LiDAR) models are shown to have an inherent statistical bias, and present a state of the art method for correcting this, while preserving data fidelity and maintaining semantic structure. This technique is assessed in the dense canopy of Micronesia, with our technique being the best at retaining high levels of detail under extreme down-sampling (\u3c 1%). Airborne systems are then explored with a method which is presented to pre-process data to preserve a global contrast and semantic content in deep learners. This approach is validated with a building footprint detection task from airborne imagery captured in Eastern TN from the 3D Elevation Program (3DEP), our approach was found to achieve significant accuracy improvements over traditional techniques. Finally, topography data spanning the globe is used to assess past and previous global land cover change. Utilizing Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) and Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) data, paired with the airborne preprocessing technique described previously, a model for predicting land-cover change from topography observations is described. The culmination of these efforts have the potential to enhance the capabilities of automated 3D geospatial processing, substantially lightening the burden of analysts, with implications improving our responses to global security, disaster response, climate change, structural design and extraplanetary exploration
