    The effect of time on ear biometrics

    We present an experimental study to demonstrate the effect of the time difference in image acquisition for gallery and probe on the performance of ear recognition. This experimental research is the first study on the time effect on ear biometrics. For the purpose of recognition, we convolve banana wavelets with an ear image and then apply local binary pattern on the convolved image. The histograms of the produced image are then used as features to describe an ear. A histogram intersection technique is then applied on the histograms of two ears to measure the ear similarity for the recognition purposes. We also use analysis of variance (ANOVA) to select features to identify the best banana wavelets for the recognition process. The experimental results show that the recognition rate is only slightly reduced by time. The average recognition rate of 98.5% is achieved for an eleven month-difference between gallery and probe on an un-occluded ear dataset of 1491 images of ears selected from Southampton University ear database

    Biometric security: A novel ear recognition approach using a 3D morphable ear model

    Biometrics is a critical component of cybersecurity that identifies persons by verifying their behavioral and physical traits. In biometric-based authentication, each individual can be correctly recognized based on their intrinsic behavioral or physical features, such as face, fingerprint, iris, and ears. This work proposes a novel approach for human identification using 3D ear images. Usually, in conventional methods, the probe image is registered with each gallery image using computational heavy registration algorithms, making it practically infeasible due to the time-consuming recognition process. Therefore, this work proposes a recognition pipeline that reduces the one-to-one registration between probe and gallery. First, a deep learning-based algorithm is used for ear detection in 3D side face images. Second, a statistical ear model known as a 3D morphable ear model (3DMEM), was constructed to use as a feature extractor from the detected ear images. Finally, a novel recognition algorithm named you morph once (YMO) is proposed for human recognition that reduces the computational time by eliminating one-to-one registration between probe and gallery, which only calculates the distance between the parameters stored in the gallery and the probe. The experimental results show the significance of the proposed method for a real-time application

    A hybrid camera- and ultrasound-based approach for needle localization and tracking using a 3D motorized curvilinear ultrasound probe

    Three-dimensional (3D) motorized curvilinear ultrasound probes provide an effective, low-cost tool to guide needle interventions, but localizing and tracking the needle in 3D ultrasound volumes is often challenging. In this study, a new method is introduced to localize and track the needle using 3D motorized curvilinear ultrasound probes. In particular, a low-cost camera mounted on the probe is employed to estimate the needle axis. The camera-estimated axis is used to identify a volume of interest (VOI) in the ultrasound volume that enables high needle visibility. This VOI is analyzed using local phase analysis and the random sample consensus algorithm to refine the camera-estimated needle axis. The needle tip is determined by searching the localized needle axis using a probabilistic approach. Dynamic needle tracking in a sequence of 3D ultrasound volumes is enabled by iteratively applying a Kalman filter to estimate the VOI that includes the needle in the successive ultrasound volume and limiting the localization analysis to this VOI. A series of ex vivo animal experiments are conducted to evaluate the accuracy of needle localization and tracking. The results show that the proposed method can localize the needle in individual ultrasound volumes with maximum error rates of 0.7 mm for the needle axis, 1.7° for the needle angle, and 1.2 mm for the needle tip. Moreover, the proposed method can track the needle in a sequence of ultrasound volumes with maximum error rates of 1.0 mm for the needle axis, 2.0° for the needle angle, and 1.7 mm for the needle tip. These results suggest the feasibility of applying the proposed method to localize and track the needle using 3D motorized curvilinear ultrasound probes
