    EKF/UKF-based channel estimation for robust and reliable communications in V2V and IIoT

    Cyber-physical systems (CPSs) are characterized by integrating computation, communication, and physical system. In typical CPS application scenarios, vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and Industry Internet of Things (IIoT), due to doubly selective fading and non-stationary channel characteristics, the robust and reliable end-to-end communication is extremely important. Channel estimation is a major signal processing technology to ensure robust and reliable communication. However, the existing channel estimation methods for V2V and IIoT cannot effectively reduce intercarrier interference (ICI) and lower the computation complexity, thus leading to poor robustness. Aiming at this challenge, according to the channel characteristics of V2V and IIoT, we design two channel estimation methods based on the Bayesian filter to promote the robustness and reliability of end-to-end communication. For the channels with doubly selective fading and non-stationary characteristics of V2V and IIoT scenarios, in the one hand, basis extended model (BEM) is used to further reduce the complexity of the channel estimation algorithm under the premise that ICI can be eliminated in the channel estimation. On the other hand, aiming at the non-stationary channel, a channel estimation and interpolation method based on extended Kalman filter (EKF) and unscented Kalman filter (UKF) Bayesian filters to jointly estimate the channel impulse response (CIR) and time-varying time domain autocorrelation coefficient is adopted. Through the MATLAB simulation, the robustness and reliability of end-to-end communication for V2V and IIoT are promoted by the proposed algorithms

    Estimation of bit error rate in 2×2 and 4×4 multi-input multi-output-orthogonal frequency division multiplexing systems

    Multiple-input, multiple-output orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (MIMO-OFDM) systems with multiple input antennas and multiple output antennas in dynamic environments face the challenge of channel estimation. To overcome this challenge and to improve the performance and signal-to-noise ratio, in this paper we used the Kalman filter for the correct estimation of the signal in dynamic environments. To obtain the original signal at the receiver end bit error rate factor plays a major role. If the signal to noise ratio is high and the bit error rate is low then signal strength is high, the signal received at the receiver end is almost similar to the ith transmitted signal. The dynamic tracking characteristic of Kalman filter is used to establish a dynamic space-time codeword and a collection of orthogonal pilot sequences to prevent interference among transmissions in this paper. Using the simulation, the Kalman filter method can be compared to the other channel estimation method presented in this paper that can track time-varying channels rapidly

    Efficient joint channel equalization and tracking for V2X communications using SC-FDE schemes

    Our aim with this paper is to present a solution suitable for vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communications, particularly, when employing single-carrier modulations combined with frequency-domain equalization (SC-FDE). In fact, we consider the V2X channel to be doubly-selective, where the variation of the channel in time is due to the presence of a Doppler term. Accordingly, the equalization procedure is dealt by a low-complexity iterative frequency-domain equalizer based on the iterative block decisionfeedback equalization (IB-DFE) while the tracking procedure is conducted employing an extended Kalman filter (EKF). The proposed system is very efficient since it allows a very low density of training symbols, even for fast-varying channels.     On the Impact of Phase Noise in Communication Systems –- Performance Analysis and Algorithms

    The mobile industry is preparing to scale up the network capacity by a factor of 1000x in order to cope with the staggering growth in mobile traffic. As a consequence, there is a tremendous pressure on the network infrastructure, where more cost-effective, flexible, high speed connectivity solutions are being sought for. In this regard, massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, and millimeter-wave communication systems are new physical layer technologies, which promise to facilitate the 1000 fold increase in network capacity. However, these technologies are extremely prone to hardware impairments like phase noise caused by noisy oscillators. Furthermore, wireless backhaul networks are an effective solution to transport data by using high-order signal constellations, which are also susceptible to phase noise impairments. Analyzing the performance of wireless communication systems impaired by oscillator phase noise, and designing systems to operate efficiently in strong phase noise conditions are critical problems in communication theory. The criticality of these problems is accentuated with the growing interest in new physical layer technologies, and the deployment of wireless backhaul networks. This forms the main motivation for this thesis where we analyze the impact of phase noise on the system performance, and we also design algorithms in order to mitigate phase noise and its effects. First, we address the problem of maximum a posteriori (MAP) detection of data in the presence of strong phase noise in single-antenna systems. This is achieved by designing a low-complexity joint phase-estimator data-detector. We show that the proposed method outperforms existing detectors, especially when high order signal constellations are used. Then, in order to further improve system performance, we consider the problem of optimizing signal constellations for transmission over channels impaired by phase noise. Specifically, we design signal constellations such that the error rate performance of the system is minimized, and the information rate of the system is maximized. We observe that these optimized constellations significantly improve the system performance, when compared to conventional constellations, and those proposed in the literature. Next, we derive the MAP symbol detector for a MIMO system where each antenna at the transceiver has its own oscillator. We propose three suboptimal, low-complexity algorithms for approximately implementing the MAP symbol detector, which involve joint phase noise estimation and data detection. We observe that the proposed techniques significantly outperform the other algorithms in prior works. Finally, we study the impact of phase noise on the performance of a massive MIMO system, where we analyze both uplink and downlink performances. Based on rigorous analyses of the achievable rates, we provide interesting insights for the following question: how should oscillators be connected to the antennas at a base station, which employs a large number of antennas

    Multicarrier modulation is the common feature of high-data rate mobile wireless systems. In that case, two phenomena disturb the symbol detection. Firstly, due to the relative transmitter-receiver motion and a difference between the local oscillator (LO) frequency at the transmitter and the receiver, a carrier frequency offset (CFO) affects the received signal. This leads to an intercarrier interference (ICI). Secondly, several versions of the transmitted signal are received due to the wireless propagation channel. These unwanted phenomena must be taken into account when designing a receiver. As estimating the multipath channel and the CFO is essential, this PhD deals with several CFO and channel estimation methods based on optimal filtering. Firstly, as the estimation issue is nonlinear, we suggest using the extended Kalman filter (EKF). It is based on a local linearization of the equations around the last state estimate. However, this approach requires a linearization based on calculations of Jacobians and Hessians matrices and may not be a sufficient description of the nonlinearity. For these reasons, we can consider the sigma-point Kalman filter (SPKF), namely the unscented Kalman Filter (UKF) and the central difference Kalman filter (CDKF). The UKF is based on the unscented transformation whereas the CDKF is based on the second order Sterling polynomial interpolation formula. Nevertheless, the above methods require an exact and accurate a priori system model as well as perfect knowledge of the additive measurementnoise statistics. Therefore, we propose to use the H∞ filtering, which is known to be more robust to uncertainties than Kalman filtering. As the state-space representation of the system is non-linear, we first evaluate the “extended H∞ filter”, which is based on a linearization of the state-space equations like the EKF. As an alternative, the “unscented H∞ filter”, which has been recently proposed in the literature, is implemented by embedding the unscented transformation into the “extended H∞ filter” and carrying out the filtering by using the statistical linear error propagation approach.Multicarrier modulation is the common feature of high-data rate mobile wireless systems.     Advanced receiver structures for mobile MIMO multicarrier communication systems

    Beyond third generation (3G) and fourth generation (4G) wireless communication systems are targeting far higher data rates, spectral efficiency and mobility requirements than existing 3G networks. By using multiple antennas at the transmitter and the receiver, multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technology allows improving both the spectral efficiency (bits/s/Hz), the coverage, and link reliability of the system. Multicarrier modulation such as orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is a powerful technique to handle impairments specific to the wireless radio channel. The combination of multicarrier modulation together with MIMO signaling provides a feasible physical layer technology for future beyond 3G and fourth generation communication systems. The theoretical benefits of MIMO and multicarrier modulation may not be fully achieved because the wireless transmission channels are time and frequency selective. Also, high data rates call for a large bandwidth and high carrier frequencies. As a result, an important Doppler spread is likely to be experienced, leading to variations of the channel over very short period of time. At the same time, transceiver front-end imperfections, mobility and rich scattering environments cause frequency synchronization errors. Unlike their single-carrier counterparts, multi-carrier transmissions are extremely sensitive to carrier frequency offsets (CFO). Therefore, reliable channel estimation and frequency synchronization are necessary to obtain the benefits of MIMO OFDM in mobile systems. These two topics are the main research problems in this thesis. An algorithm for the joint estimation and tracking of channel and CFO parameters in MIMO OFDM is developed in this thesis. A specific state-space model is introduced for MIMO OFDM systems impaired by multiple carrier frequency offsets under time-frequency selective fading. In MIMO systems, multiple frequency offsets are justified by mobility, rich scattering environment and large angle spread, as well as potentially separate radio frequency - intermediate frequency chains. An extended Kalman filter stage tracks channel and CFO parameters. Tracking takes place in time domain, which ensures reduced computational complexity, robustness to estimation errors as well as low estimation variance in comparison to frequency domain processing. The thesis also addresses the problem of blind carrier frequency synchronization in OFDM. Blind techniques exploit statistical or structural properties of the OFDM modulation. Two novel approaches are proposed for blind fine CFO estimation. The first one aims at restoring the orthogonality of the OFDM transmission by exploiting the properties of the received signal covariance matrix. The second approach is a subspace algorithm exploiting the correlation of the channel frequency response among the subcarriers. Both methods achieve reliable estimation of the CFO regardless of multipath fading. The subspace algorithm needs extremely small sample support, which is a key feature in the face of time-selective channels. Finally, the Cramér-Rao (CRB) bound is established for the problem in order to assess the large sample performance of the proposed algorithms.reviewe

    Simultaneous Positioning and Communications: Hybrid Radio Architecture, Estimation Techniques, and Experimental Validation

    abstract: Limited spectral access motivates technologies that adapt to diminishing resources and increasingly cluttered environments. A joint positioning-communications system is designed and implemented on \acf{COTS} hardware. This system enables simultaneous positioning of, and communications between, nodes in a distributed network of base-stations and unmanned aerial systems (UASs). This technology offers extreme ranging precision (<< 5 cm) with minimal bandwidth (10 MHz), a secure communications link to protect against cyberattacks, a small form factor that enables integration into numerous platforms, and minimal resource consumption which supports high-density networks. The positioning and communications tasks are performed simultaneously with a single, co-use waveform, which efficiently utilizes limited resources and supports higher user densities. The positioning task uses a cooperative, point-to-point synchronization protocol to estimate the relative position and orientation of all users within the network. The communications task distributes positioning information between users and secures the positioning task against cyberattacks. This high-performance system is enabled by advanced time-of-arrival estimation techniques and a modern phase-accurate distributed coherence synchronization algorithm.
