    This book showcases new research by emerging and established scholars on white workers and the white poor in Southern Africa. Rethinking White Societies in Southern Africa challenges the geographical and chronological limitations of existing scholarship by presenting case studies from Angola, Mozambique, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe that track the fortunes of nonhegemonic whites during the era of white minority rule. Arguing against prevalent understandings of white society as uniformly wealthy or culturally homogeneous during this period, it demonstrates that social class remained a salient element throughout the twentieth century, how Southern Africa’s white societies were often divided and riven with tension and how the resulting social, political and economic complexities animated white minority regimes in the region. Addressing themes such as the class-based disruption of racial norms and practices, state surveillance and interventions – and their failures – towards nonhegemonic whites, and the opportunities and limitations of physical and social mobility, the book mounts a forceful argument for the regional consideration of white societies in this historical context. Centrally, it extends the path-breaking insights emanating from scholarship on racialized class identities from North America to the African context to argue that race and class cannot be considered independently in Southern Africa.     Integrating Magna Dacia. A Narrative Reappraisal of Jordanes

    The aim of this study is to propose a new interpretation of Jordanes’ famous work, De Origine Actibusque Getarum, commonly known as Getica. The traditional view concerning the De Origine postulates that Jordanes was trying to devise a mythical, glorious history for the Goths, based on Greek and Latin texts, as well as what could have been ‘real elements of Gothic tradition.’ A number of scholars have also investigated the dependence of the De Origine on the lost Historia Gothorum, written by Cassiodorus – a high-ranking officer of the Ostrogothic court. Because Jordanes affirms, in the preface of the De Origine, that he was asked to abridge the Cassiodorian opus, many are led to believe that our author was able to transmit the Historia Gothorum to some extent. This thesis will counter those two views by proposing a narrative interpretation of the De Origine: my analysis is focused on the rhetorical strategies and textual choices of Jordanes. I argue that Jordanes’ usage of the ethnonym Geta, usually viewed as a classicising synonym of Goth, is, in fact, a way to link a number of different people that inhabited the Balkans throughout history: Dacians, Getae, Scythians, Goths, Gepids, and Huns. The reasoning behind this ethnogeographic constructions is, precisely, the goal of the De Origine: to devise a historical narrative of the vicissitudes of the Balkans. I chose to single out the narrative conceptualisation of this regions by calling it Magna Dacia – which is the Kulturraum that interests Jordanes and it is where most of the story takes place. My conclusions have incisive implications: we can see the De Origine as an independent text, one that does not owe its ideas to Cassiodorus; we can see a new Jordanes emerge, one with a high degree of agency in the composition of the work

    Covid Conspiracy Theories in Global Perspective examines how conspiracy theories and related forms of misinformation and disinformation about the Covid-19 pandemic have circulated widely around the world. Covid conspiracy theories have attracted considerable attention from researchers, journalists, and politicians, not least because conspiracy beliefs have the potential to negatively affect adherence to public health measures. While most of this focus has been on the United States and Western Europe, this collection provides a unique global perspective on the emergence and development of conspiracy theories through a series of case studies. The chapters have been commissioned by recognized experts on area studies and conspiracy theories. The chapters present case studies on how Covid conspiracism has played out (some focused on a single country, others on regions), using a range of methods from a variety of disciplinary perspectives, including history, politics, sociology, anthropology, and psychology. Collectively, the authors reveal that, although there are many narratives that have spread virally, they have been adapted for different uses and take on different meanings in local contexts. This volume makes an important contribution to the rapidly expanding field of academic conspiracy theory studies, as well as being of interest to those working in the media, regulatory agencies, and civil society organizations, who seek to better understand the problem of how and why conspiracy theories spread

    ‘The man who writes tunes': an assessment of the work of Eric Coates (1886-1957) and his role within the field of British light music

    The light-music composer Eric Coates was one of the most successful and popular composers of the twentieth century. This thesis seeks to address how he achieved this status through the various media that were open to him. After a biographical and teleological discussion of Coates, light music, his position within this 'school' of composition and his views on light music this thesis discusses his relationship with the BBC. Looking at the BBC's policy towards light music shows how his music fitted into their broadcasting schedules and was tailor made for use as signature tunes. Concomitant to this was a mutual symbiosis, the BBC needed his music and Coates desired their promotion and performances of his music. Key BBC personnel were important in programming, obstructing, commenting and performing his music, especially Stanford Robinson and the BBC Theatre Orchestra. Coates' popularity was sealed by his legacy of gramophone records, though these contained frequent cuts, Coates' slender output was all of a high standard because of its sincerity, melody, countermelodies, orchestration, integration of dance bands and jazz music. Though he was alive to a compositional formula that governed light music, it was never creatively limiting, as demonstrated by an in-depth discussion of several pieces. Coates often appeared in newspapers as a minor celebrity and these interviews often drew in his latest compositions. Allied to this was the foundation of the Performing Right Society which enabled him to earn a comfortable living through his music. The final aspect of his career dealt with is the music festivals held at many seaside resorts and the BBC Light Music Festivals which gave Coates the chance to conduct with important luminaries and to produce new works. All these issues united to create a unique and well-loved composer
