St. Petersburg is the proud and jealous owner of the title of home port of “The first regularly scheduled commercial Airline in the world.” This despite the fact it acquired the title quite accidentally; the unexpected result of a rather casual and typical publicity stunt sponsored by one of its early day flamboyant “characters,” one Noel A. How special are early birds?

This volume honours the academic achievements and scholarship of Professor Florence Myles as a world-leading scholar in the fields of Second Language Acquisition (SLA) and French Linguistics, in particular for her work in corpus-based SLA and language policy in primary school education. In addition to reviews of the field (e.g., primary languages policy in the UK), the volume presents new research studies reflective of key theoretical and methodological issues in current SLA research, including theory-building, corpus-based investigations, studies of language development, as well as informing teacher professional development through research. Taken together, this edited book provides a wide-ranging and balanced account of Myles’s work and speaks to her influence on SLA research and primary languages policy. We invite readers to learn more about the fascinating research presented here as inspired by Florence’s dedication to field

Fossilized skin reveals coevolution with feathers and metabolism in feathered dinosaurs and early birds

Feathers are remarkable evolutionary innovations that are associated with complex adaptations of the skin in modern birds. Fossilised feathers in non-avian dinosaurs and basal birds provide insights into feather evolution, but how associated integumentary adaptations evolved is unclear. Here we report the discovery of fossil skin, preserved with remarkable nanoscale fidelity, in three non-avian maniraptoran dinosaurs and a basal bird from the Cretaceous Jehol biota (China). The skin comprises patches of desquamating epidermal corneocytes that preserve a cytoskeletal array of helically coiled α-keratin tonofibrils. This structure confirms that basal birds and non-avian dinosaurs shed small epidermal flakes as in modern mammals and birds, but structural differences imply that these Cretaceous taxa had lower body heat production than modern birds. Feathered epidermis acquired many, but not all, anatomically modern attributes close to the base of the Maniraptora by the Middle Jurassic

Urban agriculture and 'early birds' initiatives in Warsaw

    Get PDF
The article concern on application of the idea of urban agriculture in Poland. The concept has notyet been widely recognized in Poland , that is why the emerging practitioners and their initiatives can thus verywell be named as ‘early birds’. To capture general views on UA, similarities and differences in opinions and toformulate possibilities for UA in Warsaw we organized a workshop with representatives of main UA organizationsin the Polish capital as well as representatives of the City Hall. The workshop tasks reflect different topics as:identification of UA, aims of UA, location of UA, the future of UA, opportunities and barriers for UA development, and the role of local authorities in UA development. To conclude, the UA activities represent in Warsaw promotemostly the social and ecological aspects with the role of UA in the protection of open green space in the city.Professional production in the city linked to job creation is currently not seen as of great importance. The most UAforms in Warsaw are related to allotment gardens and agricultural holdings

Does the Market Pay Off? Earnings Inequality and Returns to Education in Urban China

The paper examines earnings inequality and earnings returns to education in China among four types of workers characterized by their labor market history. Compared to workers staying in the state sector, early market entrants no longer enjoyed advantages. The commonly observed higher earnings returns to education in the market sector are only limited to recent market entrants. This results from the aggregation of two very different types of workers: those who were "pushed" and those who "jumped" into the market in later stage of the reform. The findings challenge the prevailing wisdom that education is necessarily more highly rewarded by the market sector.http://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/39838/3/wp454.pd
