WFL is a word formation based resource for Latin where words are analysed in their formative components and connected to each other on the basis of word formation rules. It represents a wide lexical resource for the study of Latin word formation. This paper describes how compounding is treated in the Word Formation Latin lexicon: the methodology and workflow employed to insert compound lemmas into the resource are described, as well as the reasons behind some methodological choices that have been taken during the process. Through the analysis of some types of Latin compounds, the theoretical contribution of this resource is highlighted and outlined

Ars Pseudo-Scauri : A Critical Edition and Commentary

This doctoral thesis contains the first edition of an anonymous Late Antique Latin elementary grammar discovered by Dr. Vivien Law more than two decades ago. The thesis presents not only the edited text and translation of the Ars Pseudo-Scauri (thus named because of the attributions of both Dr. Law as well as a Late Antique compiler known as Sergius), but also a commentary which aims to help the reader to make out the connections this text shares with other extant grammars. In the introduction and commentary, an attempt has also been made to describe certain developments in Roman language science, as well as to determine if and how they influence the doctrine of the Ars Pseudo-Scauri. In addition to a few articles by Vivien Law, little else has been written on this grammar. However, within the past few decades since the discovery of the text, an important adjustment in the paradigm of the study of ancient linguistics has taken place, with the repudiation of the traditional, static model of historiography in favour of one that emphasizes the fact that grammatical science was in lively interaction with philosophy in late Antiquity. In 1987 Dr. Law came to the conclusion that the text which has been preserved for us is either the Ars minor of Q. Terentius Scaurus, or a later abbreviation of a longer grammatical work by Scaurus. However, the attribution of this grammar to Scaurus appears not to be well founded. The text contains many doctrinal aspects which speak against such an early attribution, aspects which were not adequately addressed by Dr. Law in her article. The thesis argues against the attribution of this grammar to Q. Terentius Scaurus. The issue of dating the grammar, taking into account recent developments concerning the historiography of ancient linguistics, is also addressed. In the commentary and the introduction the content of the Ars Pseudo-Scauri is reviewed in the light of the recent hypotheses on the interaction between grammar and philosophy, which is today considered to have taken place from the first and second century AD onwards, in contrast with previous views which assumed a much earlier date. The fairly recently discovered Ars Pseudo-Scauri has not been subject to much analysis to date, and, more importantly, the few previous endeavours have not taken into account the developments which have shed new light on the study of ancient linguistics.FM Anna Reinikan väitöstutkimus liittyy kielitieteen historian alaan. Kyseessä on silti todennäköisesti yksi varhaisimmista kokonaisuudessaan säilyneistä latinankielisistä kielioppiteksteistä

This thesis contains a preface, an introduction, and a table of contents; it also contains six chapters and concludes with six appendices, the last of which is the bibliography, and a brief chronology. The first two chapters are introductory; the first chapter describes the history of grammatical writing in Europe from the ancient Greeks up to the Middle Ages; the second chapter describes briefly the mediaeval background to the Modistae, writers of speculative grammars in the later Middle Ages. Chapter three describes their grammatical theories against the metaphysical theories of reality on which they constructed their theories; the second part of this chapter contains an analysis of their technical vocabulary. The fourth chapter analyses the descriptive procedure of the Modistae; it is divided into two parts. The first part elements describes the creation of a pars orationis beginning with the expression (vox) and culminating in the pars, orationis the second section, 'categories', describes the process beginning with the thing to be signified and its properties (modus essendi) and ending with its grammatical signification (modus significandi). Chapter five is an analysis of Modistic descriptions of the partes orationis, and is divided into two parts; the first part contains the description of the eight partes orationis; the second part discusses Modistic syntactic theory. The sixth chapter attempts to evaluate the grammatical theories of the Modistae with reference to modem linguistic theories. The thesis concludes with six appendices. The first contains a brief comparison of Siger de Courtrai and Thomas of Erfurt, the principal members of our corpus: the second contains definitions of the modes used to describe the partes orationis; the third and fourth are diagrammatic expositions of their descriptions of the partes orationis and their syntax; the fifth contains a glossary of technical terms; the final appendix contains the bibliography

Prospettive nello studio del lessico italiano

The Proceedings of the 9th Conference of the International Society of Italian Linguistics and Philology (SILFI), «Prospects in the study of Italian vocabulary» (Florence, 14-17 June 2006), comprise 88 contributions by scholars from Italy and abroad. The essays are divided into twelve sections, each representing a study prospect, thus illustrating the vitality of the great tradition of Italian studies on language. The Conference confirms the importance of tradition, but also points up how the new areas of study – concerning the use of information infrastructures for the acquisition and conservation of the linguistic heritage – are by now pivotal both for research and for the establishment of essential resources for the defence and promotion of our language. Meditation on the Italian lexicon at this moment in time signifies retrieving the relation between our language and our culture, which tends to be overshadowed in a period of globalisation and of vehicular language such as the present
