    History, Colonial Conquest and Empire: Louis-Philippe's Musée Historique & Horace Vernet's Battle Paintings of the French Occupation of Algeria

    The construction of the Musée Historique at Versailles and the colonial conquest of Algeria were two concurrent projects of national concern that spanned the July Monarchy (1830-1848), the period of Louis-Philippe d'Orléans's political administration. Louis-Philippe commissioned the history painter, Horace Vernet, to represent significant battles of the Algerian campaign to decorate three rooms in the Versailles museum, collectively titled the salles d'Afrique (African rooms). In this thesis, I argue that Vernet's Algerian battle scenes connect the Versailles historical-museological program with the colonial conquest of Algeria along aesthetic and ideological lines. Vernet's battle scenes functioned as propaganda, articulating the July Monarchy's imperial ambitions. In this respect, they invoked the legacy of Napoleon and the First Empire (1804-1815). Installed in the Versailles museum, they were also complicit in Louis-Philippe's project of writing history visually and inserting the Orléans chapter into the epic of French civic and martial glory embodied in the Musée Historique

    Half-timbered houses of the Tudor and Elizabethan periods in Britain

    Now half-timbered English houses, upholstered on facades with slanting boards that exhibit architectonics of the framework, and laconically painted in black (brown)-white, are gradually becoming a sign of good taste in the construction of other European countries. However, there are almost no scholars who studied the half-timbered buildings of Britain in Ukraine; however, progressively the fashion for such buildings extends to our country. The article is devoted to the monuments of half-timbered architecture of the late Gothic period (1500-1560s – during the Tudor era (1485-1603) and the Renaissance, the epoch of the Elizabethan style (1558-1603) – the time of the highest prosperity of England. In the specified century, the foundations of folk architecture of Britain were laid, based on the legacy of German Gothic building techniques. Now the traditional half-timbered houses of England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales are not only preserved and protected by law in the UK but also undergo a time of quality renovation and a new fashion boom. In this regard, it is relevant to study their unique artistic-figurative and technological features, as well as the specifics of arranging interiors in such buildings, gradually starting to capture not only the inhabitants of Northern Europe, but also its East

    The primary purpose of conducting this research was to establish game assessment guidelines and characteristics for integrating elected characteristics of games into ongoing instructional approaches. The cost of repurposing commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) games could offer a considerably lower cost alternative than the cost of creating a new instructional game developed for a specific instructional goal. The McNeese Game Assessment Tool (MGAT), created for the assessment of games in this usability study, is currently in a beta stage and was found to have potential for future game assessment. The overall assessment indicated that the tool was effective in analyzing game products for reuse potential and that the five instruments that make up the tool did meet the purpose of the design. However, the study also indicated that the instruments needed recommended modifications and further testing with a larger population group before the tool could be utilized. The assessment process identified in this study was a step forward in the area of game and simulation integration research. This study indicated that more research is needed in the area of instructional design to enhance instructional integration goals for future game, simulation and training applications

    Urban palimpsest: re-placing memory in war torn city Dresden

    Urban landscapes can be envisaged as a palimpsest of historical layers, some of which have disappeared while others remain active in constituting contemporary identities. Yet memory is tricky and one’s memory can be false, distorted or erased consciously or unconsciously from brain. Like history, some memories can be lost, while others others might be retained and continue to influence the present. This thesis explores memory as active construction. Construction and reconstruction are ongoing and as layered and nuanced as the history itself. Moreover, memory is both personal and collective. It is shared, appropriated, and reassigned depending on whose personal filter is determining value or elimination. The thesis uses the idea of palimpsest, a term suggesting the wearing away of a surface to expose previous realities and presences in a collage of focus, diffusion, collision and superimposition. By engaging the new media Augmented Reality (AR), the shield of the present and the individual can be dropped long enough to allow history and memory to accumulate, interact and shared beyond, the single viewer and moment of physical encounter

    A plm implementation for aerospace systems engineering-conceptual rotorcraft design

    The thesis will discuss the Systems Engineering phase of an original Conceptual Design Engineering Methodology for Aerospace Engineering-Vehicle Synthesis. This iterative phase is shown to benefit from digitization of Integrated Product&Process Design (IPPD) activities, through the application of Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) technologies. Requirements analysis through the use of Quality Function Deployment (QFD) and 7 MaP tools is explored as an illustration. A "Requirements Data Manager" (RDM) is used to show the ability to reduce the time and cost to design for both new and legacy/derivative designs. Here the COTS tool Teamcenter Systems Engineering (TCSE) is used as the RDM. The utility of the new methodology is explored through consideration of a legacy RFP based vehicle design proposal and associated aerospace engineering. The 2001 American Helicopter Society (AHS) 18th Student Design Competition RFP is considered as a starting point for the Systems Engineering phase. A Conceptual Design Engineering activity was conducted in 2000/2001 by Graduate students (including the author) in Rotorcraft Engineering at the Daniel Guggenheim School of Aerospace Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta GA. This resulted in the "Kingfisher" vehicle design, an advanced search and rescue rotorcraft capable of performing the "Perfect Storm" mission, from the movie of the same name. The associated requirements, architectures, and work breakdown structure data sets for the Kingfisher are used to relate the capabilities of the proposed Integrated Digital Environment (IDE). The IDE is discussed as a repository for legacy knowledge capture, management, and design template creation. A primary thesis theme is to promote the automation of the up-front conceptual definition of complex systems, specifically aerospace vehicles, while anticipating downstream preliminary and full spectrum lifecycle design activities.     Weimar – a Personal Tribute

    Weimar is a relatively small town in the centre of Germany. Around 1552 it became the capital of the small Herzogtum Sachsen-Weimar (Principality Saxony-Weimar), from 1741 until 1918 the capital of the (still relatively small) Principality – since 1815 Grand Principality – (Groß-) Herzogtum Sachsen-Weimar-Eisenach (Saxony-Weimar-Eisenach). After World War I all monarchic structures in Germany were abandoned, the democratic Free State of Thuringia was founded in 1920, and Weimar became its capital until 1950. Despite its moderate size, Weimar managed to gain a cultural profile that extended and still extends far beyond the borders of the (Grand-) Principality, even beyond Germany. The foundations were laid in the 18th and early 19th century, connected to writers and pilosophers like Christoph Martin Wieland, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Johann Gottfried von Herder, and Friedrich von Schiller who all lived and worked in Weimar. In the late 19th and early 20th century more writers, musicians and artists contributed to Weimar’s reputation, e.g. Franz Liszt, Richard Strauss, Hugo von Hofmannsthal, Harry Graf Kessler, Henry van de Velde, Edvard Munch, Walter Gropius, Paul Klee, Oskar Schlemmer, Wassily Kandinsky, Lyonel Feininger. In politics, Weimar played ambiguous roles between a comparatively liberal (Grand) Principality, the birth place of the first democratic state in Germany (Weimar Republic), turning “brown” (National-Socialist) from the late 1920s, Communist after World War II, democratic again after the German re-unification in 1990. Weimar is a very special, even intriguing place. This book tries to convey its aura by telling its story from the early beginnings in the 16th century until today, with a main focus on the last three centuries – embedded into pan-German, even pan-European developments
