    The Largest Unethical Medical Experiment in Human History

    This monograph describes the largest unethical medical experiment in human history: the implementation and operation of non-ionizing non-visible EMF radiation (hereafter called wireless radiation) infrastructure for communications, surveillance, weaponry, and other applications. It is unethical because it violates the key ethical medical experiment requirement for “informed consent” by the overwhelming majority of the participants. The monograph provides background on unethical medical research/experimentation, and frames the implementation of wireless radiation within that context. The monograph then identifies a wide spectrum of adverse effects of wireless radiation as reported in the premier biomedical literature for over seven decades. Even though many of these reported adverse effects are extremely severe, the true extent of their severity has been grossly underestimated. Most of the reported laboratory experiments that produced these effects are not reflective of the real-life environment in which wireless radiation operates. Many experiments do not include pulsing and modulation of the carrier signal, and most do not account for synergistic effects of other toxic stimuli acting in concert with the wireless radiation. These two additions greatly exacerbate the severity of the adverse effects from wireless radiation, and their neglect in current (and past) experimentation results in substantial under-estimation of the breadth and severity of adverse effects to be expected in a real-life situation. This lack of credible safety testing, combined with depriving the public of the opportunity to provide informed consent, contextualizes the wireless radiation infrastructure operation as an unethical medical experiment

    Rapid advances in wireless technology have increased the number of users of mobile devices. As of 2011, the number of cell phone subscribers have reached 5.3 billion worldwide. Mobile devices have saturated our environment with radio frequency (RF) signals. This situation has created public concern over the effect of such signals on human health. This dissertation focuses on the correlation of RF signals emitted by cell phones with male infertility. A thorough discussion is provided on the effects of RF signals on the development of central nervous system (CNS) neoplasm, the design of these mobile devices, the range of the RF frequencies they emit, the power with which they operate, their specific absorption rate (SAR), the distance between the user and the device while in use, how and where the devices are used, the duration of usage, and the accumulated exposure associated with the use of multiple RF devices. The results of our reviews and experimental in vitro studies show a significant correlation between the usage of mobile phones and human semen parameters, with a decrease in motility and viability, and an increase in the reactive oxygen species (ROS) score. However, in daily usage, a cell phone kept in proximity to the groin is separated from the testes by multiple layers of tissue. To explore this effect, a computational model of scrotal tissues was designed. Our results show that during in vitro experimentation, an effect equivalent to real-life conditions can be obtained by placing the cell phone a few centimeters farther away from the semen sample. The results of our study can be used to calculate the equivalent distance between a radiation source and a semen sample, and to set up in vitro experiments that mimic real-life condition

    Sensing at nanostructures for agri-food and enviromental applications

    With a predicted population increase of 2.3 billion people, by 2050, agricultural productivity must be vastly improved and made sustainable. Globally, agriculture must deliver a 60% increase in food production to cope with the population demand. Moreover, this needs to be achieved against a changing climate, an exploitation of natural resources, and growing water and land scarcities. New digital technologies can optimise production efficiency and ensure food security and safety while also minimising waste within the production systems and the supply chain. To this end, new sensor technologies are being developed for applications in animal health diagnostics and environmental issues related to the global population, such as food & crop protection, pathogen and toxin detection, and environmental remediation. In this thesis, two new nanosensing diagnostic devices are developed and presented; surface enhanced Raman sensing and electrochemical sensing. Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) substrates were fabricated by templating a flexible thermoplastic polymer against an aluminium drinks can followed by coating with a silver film, to produce a rough nanostructured metallic surface. SERS is used for both qualitative (molecular fingerprint) and quantitative detection of dye molecules and food toxins. In addition, the SERS technique is also applied in combination with nanoelectrochemical square wave voltammetry to detect nano-concentrations of neonicotinoid pesticides. The enhanced sensitivity and minimum sample preparation requirements provide tremendous opportunities for food safety and security sectors. An impedimetric immunosensor device (with a micro SD style pin-out) was also developed for the serological diagnosis of viruses and antibodies associated with bovine respiratory disease and bovine liver fluke. The silicon chip devices consist of six on-chip nanoband electrodes which can be independently modified with a polymer layer for covalent immobilisation of capture and target biomolecules. This electrochemical biosensor technology provides label-free and cost-efficient sensing capability in a compact size, and demonstrates the potential development of immunoassay-based point-of-use devices for on-farm diagnosis or therapeutic monitoring in animal health applications

    Modulation of the haematopoietic stem cell niche by photo-triggerable nanoparticles

    The bone-marrow haematopoietic stem cell niche is a protective hard to reach microenvironment that is difficult to modulate in the context of HSC transplant and malignant haematopoietic disease. In this thesis we developed new strategies to tackle this by the use of a combination of nanomedicine tools and cell-mediated delivery systems. In the context of leukaemia, cells that are resistant to conventional therapies are thought to reside in protective niches. Here, we describe light-inducible polymeric retinoic acid (RA)-containing nanoparticles (NPs) with the capacity to accumulate in the cytoplasm of leukaemia cells for several days and release their RA payloads within a few minutes upon exposure to blue/UV light. Compared to NPs that are not activated by light exposure, these NPs more efficiently reduce the clonogenicity of bone marrow cancer cells from patients with AML and induce the differentiation of RA-low sensitive leukaemia cells. Importantly, we show that leukaemia cells transfected with light-inducible NPs containing RA can engraft into bone marrow in vivo in the proximity of other leukaemic cells, differentiate upon exposure to blue light and release paracrine factors that modulate nearby cells. This capacity of remotely modulating the leukaemic niche has been tested in an AML disease animal model with success. RA+NPs induced AML differentiation towards monocytic/macrophage lineage in the MLL-AF9 mouse model of AML. Also, we have shown in vitro that RA+NPs stimulate antitumoral M1 macrophage activation. This macrophage induced differentiation in vivo seems to have “systemic” anti-leukemic effect within the BM leukemic niche, as we observed a significant reduction of leukemic cells in the BM of animals treated with RA+NPs when compared with animals treated with empty NPs (RA-NPs). Finally, prospective studies on the use of healthy HSCs as carriers have shown that despite having a more sensitive behaviour UCB CD34+cells can be loaded with RA+NP and after light-activated release of RA, induce CD38 expression and differentiate. Towards the use of this type of tools in the context of HSC transplant engraftment modulation we were able to produce functional HOXB4, a pivotal transcription factor for HSC potency, that was able to induce G0 quiescence, but NP-functionalization with this molecule remains a challenge and is the subject of future work

    Dyslipidemia

    Dyslipidemia has a complex pathophysiology consisting of various genetic, lifestyle, and environmental factors. It has many adverse health impacts, notably in the development of chronic non-communicable diseases. Significant ethnic differences exist due to the prevalence and types of lipid disorders. While elevated serum total- and LDL-cholesterol are the main concern in Western populations, in other countries hypertriglyceridemia and low HDL-cholesterol are more prevalent. The latter types of lipid disorders are considered as components of the metabolic syndrome. The escalating trend of obesity, as well as changes in lifestyle and environmental factors will make dyslipidemia a global medical and public health threat, not only for adults but for the pediatric age group as well. Several experimental and clinical studies are still being conducted regarding the underlying mechanisms and treatment of dyslipidemia.
