Industrial Energy Management and Sustainability

Growing environmental concerns caused by increasing consumption of naturalresources and pollution need to be addressed. Manufacturing dictates the efficiencywith which resource inputs are transformed into economically valuableoutputs in the form of products and services. Consequently, it is also responsiblefor the resulting waste and pollution generated from this transformation process.As a matter of fact, about one-third of the global total energy consumption isassociated withmanufacturing activities; thus, achieving higher energy efficiencyin this sector has been the focus of research as well as of policy and industrialprogrammes in recent years. In particular, being able to effectively manageenergy and energy-related activities has proved to be a fundamental capabilityfor companies willing to improve their sustainability, as it constitutes the first,critical step to understanding their processes and to identifying and correctlyevaluating improvement opportunities.This Special Issue focuses on energy management and sustainability of bothmanufacturing processes and systems, including methods, practices, tools, applicationsand experiences

16th European Symposium on Comminution and Classification: book of extended abstracts

Extended abstracts from the 16th European Symposium on Comminution and Classification, ESCC 2019 held at the University of Leeds, 2-4 September 2019. Based on the abstracts received, the symposium was structured in the following themes: fundamentals of size reduction, innovations in milling and classification, nanomilling, mechano-chemistry and solid state transformations, pharmaceuticals and foods, attrition and wear, and related modelling. The notable number of abstracts received on modelling made it possible to divide them in sub-themes: mechanistic, population balance, discrete element and coupling with computational fluid dynamics

1993 OURE report, including the 3rd Annual UMR Undergraduate Research Symposium -- Entire Proceedings

The Opportunities for Undergraduate Research Experience program began in 1990. This volume represents the proceedings of the third annual OURE program. The aims of the program are to enrich the learning process and make it more active, encourage interaction between students and faculty members, raise the level of research on the campus, help recruit superior students to the graduate program, and support the notion that teaching and research are compatible and mutually reinforcing. As the papers herein attest, the OURE program continues to achieve its goals -- UMR students have performed research on an enormous variety of topics, have worked closely with faculty members, and have experienced deeply both the pleasures and frustrations of research. Several of the undergraduates whose papers are included are now graduate students at UMR or elsewhere. The first section of this volume is made up of papers presented at the third annual UMR Undergraduate Research Symposium held on January 29, 1993
