    Investigating human-perceptual properties of "shapes" using 3D shapes and 2D fonts

    Shapes are generally used to convey meaning. They are used in video games, films and other multimedia, in diverse ways. 3D shapes may be destined for virtual scenes or represent objects to be constructed in the real-world. Fonts add character to an otherwise plain block of text, allowing the writer to make important points more visually prominent or distinct from other text. They can indicate the structure of a document, at a glance. Rather than studying shapes through traditional geometric shape descriptors, we provide alternative methods to describe and analyse shapes, from a lens of human perception. This is done via the concepts of Schelling Points and Image Specificity. Schelling Points are choices people make when they aim to match with what they expect others to choose but cannot communicate with others to determine an answer. We study whole mesh selections in this setting, where Schelling Meshes are the most frequently selected shapes. The key idea behind image Specificity is that different images evoke different descriptions; but ‘Specific’ images yield more consistent descriptions than others. We apply Specificity to 2D fonts. We show that each concept can be learned and predict them for fonts and 3D shapes, respectively, using a depth image-based convolutional neural network. Results are shown for a range of fonts and 3D shapes and we demonstrate that font Specificity and the Schelling meshes concept are useful for visualisation, clustering, and search applications. Overall, we find that each concept represents similarities between their respective type of shape, even when there are discontinuities between the shape geometries themselves. The ‘context’ of these similarities is in some kind of abstract or subjective meaning which is consistent among different people

    AutoGraff: towards a computational understanding of graffiti writing and related art forms.

    The aim of this thesis is to develop a system that generates letters and pictures with a style that is immediately recognizable as graffiti art or calligraphy. The proposed system can be used similarly to, and in tight integration with, conventional computer-aided geometric design tools and can be used to generate synthetic graffiti content for urban environments in games and in movies, and to guide robotic or fabrication systems that can materialise the output of the system with physical drawing media. The thesis is divided into two main parts. The first part describes a set of stroke primitives, building blocks that can be combined to generate different designs that resemble graffiti or calligraphy. These primitives mimic the process typically used to design graffiti letters and exploit well known principles of motor control to model the way in which an artist moves when incrementally tracing stylised letter forms. The second part demonstrates how these stroke primitives can be automatically recovered from input geometry defined in vector form, such as the digitised traces of writing made by a user, or the glyph outlines in a font. This procedure converts the input geometry into a seed that can be transformed into a variety of calligraphic and graffiti stylisations, which depend on parametric variations of the strokes

    Grounding semantic cognition using computational modelling and network analysis

    The overarching objective of this thesis is to further the field of grounded semantics using a range of computational and empirical studies. Over the past thirty years, there have been many algorithmic advances in the modelling of semantic cognition. A commonality across these cognitive models is a reliance on hand-engineering “toy-models”. Despite incorporating newer techniques (e.g. Long short-term memory), the model inputs remain unchanged. We argue that the inputs to these traditional semantic models have little resemblance with real human experiences. In this dissertation, we ground our neural network models by training them with real-world visual scenes using naturalistic photographs. Our approach is an alternative to both hand-coded features and embodied raw sensorimotor signals. We conceptually replicate the mutually reinforcing nature of hybrid (feature-based and grounded) representations using silhouettes of concrete concepts as model inputs. We next gradually develop a novel grounded cognitive semantic representation which we call scene2vec, starting with object co-occurrences and then adding emotions and language-based tags. Limitations of our scene-based representation are identified for more abstract concepts (e.g. freedom). We further present a large-scale human semantics study, which reveals small-world semantic network topologies are context-dependent and that scenes are the most dominant cognitive dimension. This finding leads us to conclude that there is no meaning without context. Lastly, scene2vec shows promising human-like context-sensitive stereotypes (e.g. gender role bias), and we explore how such stereotypes are reduced by targeted debiasing. In conclusion, this thesis provides support for a novel computational viewpoint on investigating meaning - scene-based grounded semantics. Future research scaling scene-based semantic models to human-levels through virtual grounding has the potential to unearth new insights into the human mind and concurrently lead to advancements in artificial general intelligence by enabling robots, embodied or otherwise, to acquire and represent meaning directly from the environment

    Predictive Maintenance of an External Gear Pump using Machine Learning Algorithms

    The importance of Predictive Maintenance is critical for engineering industries, such as manufacturing, aerospace and energy. Unexpected failures cause unpredictable downtime, which can be disruptive and high costs due to reduced productivity. This forces industries to ensure the reliability of their equip-ment. In order to increase the reliability of equipment, maintenance actions, such as repairs, replacements, equipment updates, and corrective actions are employed. These actions affect the flexibility, quality of operation and manu-facturing time. It is therefore essential to plan maintenance before failure occurs.Traditional maintenance techniques rely on checks conducted routinely based on running hours of the machine. The drawback of this approach is that maintenance is sometimes performed before it is required. Therefore, conducting maintenance based on the actual condition of the equipment is the optimal solu-tion. This requires collecting real-time data on the condition of the equipment, using sensors (to detect events and send information to computer processor).Predictive Maintenance uses these types of techniques or analytics to inform about the current, and future state of the equipment. In the last decade, with the introduction of the Internet of Things (IoT), Machine Learning (ML), cloud computing and Big Data Analytics, manufacturing industry has moved forward towards implementing Predictive Maintenance, resulting in increased uptime and quality control, optimisation of maintenance routes, improved worker safety and greater productivity.The present thesis describes a novel computational strategy of Predictive Maintenance (fault diagnosis and fault prognosis) with ML and Deep Learning applications for an FG304 series external gear pump, also known as a domino pump. In the absence of a comprehensive set of experimental data, synthetic data generation techniques are implemented for Predictive Maintenance by perturbing the frequency content of time series generated using High-Fidelity computational techniques. In addition, various types of feature extraction methods considered to extract most discriminatory informations from the data. For fault diagnosis, three types of ML classification algorithms are employed, namely Multilayer Perceptron (MLP), Support Vector Machine (SVM) and Naive Bayes (NB) algorithms. For prognosis, ML regression algorithms, such as MLP and SVM, are utilised. Although significant work has been reported by previous authors, it remains difficult to optimise the choice of hyper-parameters (important parameters whose value is used to control the learning process) for each specific ML algorithm. For instance, the type of SVM kernel function or the selection of the MLP activation function and the optimum number of hidden layers (and neurons).It is widely understood that the reliability of ML algorithms is strongly depen-dent upon the existence of a sufficiently large quantity of high-quality training data. In the present thesis, due to the unavailability of experimental data, a novel high-fidelity in-silico dataset is generated via a Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) model, which has been used for the training of the underlying ML metamodel. In addition, a large number of scenarios are recreated, ranging from healthy to faulty ones (e.g. clogging, radial gap variations, axial gap variations, viscosity variations, speed variations). Furthermore, the high-fidelity dataset is re-enacted by using degradation functions to predict the remaining useful life (fault prognosis) of an external gear pump.The thesis explores and compares the performance of MLP, SVM and NB algo-rithms for fault diagnosis and MLP and SVM for fault prognosis. In order to enable fast training and reliable testing of the MLP algorithm, some predefined network architectures, like 2n neurons per hidden layer, are used to speed up the identification of the precise number of neurons (shown to be useful when the sample data set is sufficiently large). Finally, a series of benchmark tests are presented, enabling to conclude that for fault diagnosis, the use of wavelet features and a MLP algorithm can provide the best accuracy, and the MLP al-gorithm provides the best prediction results for fault prognosis. In addition, benchmark examples are simulated to demonstrate the mesh convergence for the CFD model whereas, quantification analysis and noise influence on training data are performed for ML algorithms

    Understanding the behavioural and neurological response to word reading training paired with anodal tDCS in participants with Central Alexia

    Central alexia (CA) is an acquired reading disorder co-occurring with a generalised language deficit (aphasia). In my thesis, through a series of three experiments, I aim to explore the reading network of 23 patients with CA and how it responds to a training application (app) called iReadMore. It is hoped that improving our understanding of the mechanisms of neural plasticity following therapy for post-stroke CA will lead to the development of more effectively targeted therapies. The introduction outlines models of reading and our current understanding of neuroplasticity in post-stroke aphasia. Of particular importance is the view of aphasia as a network disorder. Accordingly, this thesis investigates the effective connectivity observed when reading, rather than activation within individual regions. In the first results chapter, I compare the reading networks of CA and control participants using dynamic causal modelling (DCM) for magnetoencephalography (MEG) data. This analysis aims to identify potentially damaged and adapted connections within the reading network of CA participants. I then report the results of a clinical trial investigating the effects of iReadMore training, paired with anodal transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (A-tDCS). This chapter aims to identify if iReadMore training improves single word reading aloud, and if A-tDCS provides an additive effect on training. In the final results chapter, I use DCM for MEG to explore training induced changes in the reading network of CA patients. This chapter aims to identify the neural mechanisms by which iReadMore training is effective. In chapter six, I take each of the results chapters in turn and discuss the main findings, limitations and potential future research directions. I also discuss reading therapy for CA and the clinical use of DCM as two broader topics touched upon by this thesis

    Behaviour-aware mobile touch interfaces

    Mobile touch devices have become ubiquitous everyday tools for communication, information, as well as capturing, storing and accessing personal data. They are often seen as personal devices, linked to individual users, who access the digital part of their daily lives via hand-held touchscreens. This personal use and the importance of the touch interface motivate the main assertion of this thesis: Mobile touch interaction can be improved by enabling user interfaces to assess and take into account how the user performs these interactions. This thesis introduces the new term "behaviour-aware" to characterise such interfaces. These behaviour-aware interfaces aim to improve interaction by utilising behaviour data: Since users perform touch interactions for their main tasks anyway, inferring extra information from said touches may, for example, save users' time and reduce distraction, compared to explicitly asking them for this information (e.g. user identity, hand posture, further context). Behaviour-aware user interfaces may utilise this information in different ways, in particular to adapt to users and contexts. Important questions for this research thus concern understanding behaviour details and influences, modelling said behaviour, and inference and (re)action integrated into the user interface. In several studies covering both analyses of basic touch behaviour and a set of specific prototype applications, this thesis addresses these questions and explores three application areas and goals: 1) Enhancing input capabilities – by modelling users' individual touch targeting behaviour to correct future touches and increase touch accuracy. The research reveals challenges and opportunities of behaviour variability arising from factors including target location, size and shape, hand and finger, stylus use, mobility, and device size. The work further informs modelling and inference based on targeting data, and presents approaches for simulating touch targeting behaviour and detecting behaviour changes. 2) Facilitating privacy and security – by observing touch targeting and typing behaviour patterns to implicitly verify user identity or distinguish multiple users during use. The research shows and addresses mobile-specific challenges, in particular changing hand postures. It also reveals that touch targeting characteristics provide useful biometric value both in the lab as well as in everyday typing. Influences of common evaluation assumptions are assessed and discussed as well. 3) Increasing expressiveness – by enabling interfaces to pass on behaviour variability from input to output space, studied with a keyboard that dynamically alters the font based on current typing behaviour. Results show that with these fonts users can distinguish basic contexts as well as individuals. They also explicitly control font influences for personal communication with creative effects. This thesis further contributes concepts and implemented tools for collecting touch behaviour data, analysing and modelling touch behaviour, and creating behaviour-aware and adaptive mobile touch interfaces. Together, these contributions support researchers and developers in investigating and building such user interfaces. Overall, this research shows how variability in mobile touch behaviour can be addressed and exploited for the benefit of the users. The thesis further discusses opportunities for transfer and reuse of touch behaviour models and information across applications and devices, for example to address tradeoffs of privacy/security and usability. Finally, the work concludes by reflecting on the general role of behaviour-aware user interfaces, proposing to view them as a way of embedding expectations about user input into interactive artefacts

    Model based methods for locating, enhancing and recognising low resolution objects in video

    Visual perception is our most important sense which enables us to detect and recognise objects even in low detail video scenes. While humans are able to perform such object detection and recognition tasks reliably, most computer vision algorithms struggle with wide angle surveillance videos that make automatic processing difficult due to low resolution and poor detail objects. Additional problems arise from varying pose and lighting conditions as well as non-cooperative subjects. All these constraints pose problems for automatic scene interpretation of surveillance video, including object detection, tracking and object recognition.Therefore, the aim of this thesis is to detect, enhance and recognise objects by incorporating a priori information and by using model based approaches. Motivated by the increasing demand for automatic methods for object detection, enhancement and recognition in video surveillance, different aspects of the video processing task are investigated with a focus on human faces. In particular, the challenge of fully automatic face pose and shape estimation by fitting a deformable 3D generic face model under varying pose and lighting conditions is tackled. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) is utilised to build an appearance model that is then used within a particle filter based approach to fit the 3D face mask to the image. This recovers face pose and person-specific shape information simultaneously. Experiments demonstrate the use in different resolution and under varying pose and lighting conditions. Following that, a combined tracking and super resolution approach enhances the quality of poor detail video objects. A 3D object mask is subdivided such that every mask triangle is smaller than a pixel when projected into the image and then used for model based tracking. The mask subdivision then allows for super resolution of the object by combining several video frames. This approach achieves better results than traditional super resolution methods without the use of interpolation or deblurring.Lastly, object recognition is performed in two different ways. The first recognition method is applied to characters and used for license plate recognition. A novel character model is proposed to create different appearances which are then matched with the image of unknown characters for recognition. This allows for simultaneous character segmentation and recognition and high recognition rates are achieved for low resolution characters down to only five pixels in size. While this approach is only feasible for objects with a limited number of different appearances, like characters, the second recognition method is applicable to any object, including human faces. Therefore, a generic 3D face model is automatically fitted to an image of a human face and recognition is performed on a mask level rather than image level. This approach does not require an initial pose estimation nor the selection of feature points, the face alignment is provided implicitly by the mask fitting process

    Improving time efficiency of feedforward neural network learning

    Feedforward neural networks have been widely studied and used in many applications in science and engineering. The training of this type of networks is mainly undertaken using the well-known backpropagation based learning algorithms. One major problem with this type of algorithms is the slow training convergence speed, which hinders their applications. In order to improve the training convergence speed of this type of algorithms, many researchers have developed different improvements and enhancements. However, the slow convergence problem has not been fully addressed. This thesis makes several contributions by proposing new backpropagation learning algorithms based on the terminal attractor concept to improve the existing backpropagation learning algorithms such as the gradient descent and Levenberg-Marquardt algorithms. These new algorithms enable fast convergence both at a distance from and in a close range of the ideal weights. In particular, a new fast convergence mechanism is proposed which is based on the fast terminal attractor concept. Comprehensive simulation studies are undertaken to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed backpropagataion algorithms with terminal attractors. Finally, three practical application cases of time series forecasting, character recognition and image interpolation are chosen to show the practicality and usefulness of the proposed learning algorithms with comprehensive comparative studies with existing algorithms

    Robust Subspace Estimation via Low-Rank and Sparse Decomposition and Applications in Computer Vision

    PhDRecent advances in robust subspace estimation have made dimensionality reduction and noise and outlier suppression an area of interest for research, along with continuous improvements in computer vision applications. Due to the nature of image and video signals that need a high dimensional representation, often storage, processing, transmission, and analysis of such signals is a difficult task. It is therefore desirable to obtain a low-dimensional representation for such signals, and at the same time correct for corruptions, errors, and outliers, so that the signals could be readily used for later processing. Major recent advances in low-rank modelling in this context were initiated by the work of Cand`es et al. [17] where the authors provided a solution for the long-standing problem of decomposing a matrix into low-rank and sparse components in a Robust Principal Component Analysis (RPCA) framework. However, for computer vision applications RPCA is often too complex, and/or may not yield desirable results. The low-rank component obtained by the RPCA has usually an unnecessarily high rank, while in certain tasks lower dimensional representations are required. The RPCA has the ability to robustly estimate noise and outliers and separate them from the low-rank component, by a sparse part. But, it has no mechanism of providing an insight into the structure of the sparse solution, nor a way to further decompose the sparse part into a random noise and a structured sparse component that would be advantageous in many computer vision tasks. As videos signals are usually captured by a camera that is moving, obtaining a low-rank component by RPCA becomes impossible. In this thesis, novel Approximated RPCA algorithms are presented, targeting different shortcomings of the RPCA. The Approximated RPCA was analysed to identify the most time consuming RPCA solutions, and replace them with simpler yet tractable alternative solutions. The proposed method is able to obtain the exact desired rank for the low-rank component while estimating a global transformation to describe camera-induced motion. Furthermore, it is able to decompose the sparse part into a foreground sparse component, and a random noise part that contains no useful information for computer vision processing. The foreground sparse component is obtained by several novel structured sparsity-inducing norms, that better encapsulate the needed pixel structure in visual signals. Moreover, algorithms for reducing complexity of low-rank estimation have been proposed that achieve significant complexity reduction without sacrificing the visual representation of video and image information. The proposed algorithms are applied to several fundamental computer vision tasks, namely, high efficiency video coding, batch image alignment, inpainting, and recovery, video stabilisation, background modelling and foreground segmentation, robust subspace clustering and motion estimation, face recognition, and ultra high definition image and video super-resolution. The algorithms proposed in this thesis including batch image alignment and recovery, background modelling and foreground segmentation, robust subspace clustering and motion segmentation, and ultra high definition image and video super-resolution achieve either state-of-the-art or comparable results to existing methods
