    Quality of Service Support in IEEE 802.11 Wireless LAN

    Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs) are gaining popularity at an unprecedented rate, at home, at work, and in public hot spot locations. As these networks become ubiquitous and an integral part of the infrastructure, they will be increasingly used for multi-media applications. The heart of the current 802.11 WLANs mechanism is the Distributed Coordination Function (DCF) which does not have any Quality of Service (QoS) support. The emergence of multimedia applications, such as the local services in WLANs hotspots and distributions of entertainment in residential WLANs, has prompted research in QoS support for WLANs. The absence of QoS support results in applications with drastically different requirements receiving the same (yet potentially unsatisfactory) service. Without absolute throughput support, the performance of applications with stringent throughput requirements will not be met. Without relative throughput support, heterogeneous types of applications will be treated unfairly and their performance will be poor. Without delay constraint support, time-sensitive applications will not even be possible. The objective of this dissertation is, therefore, to develop a comprehensive and integrated solution to provide effective and efficient QoS support in WLANs in a distributed, fair, scalable, and robust manner.In this dissertation, we present a novel distributed QoS mechanism called Distributed Relative/Absolute Fair Throughput with Delay Support (DRAFT+D). DRAFT+D is de- signed specifically to provide integrated QoS support in IEEE 802.11 WLANs. Unlike any other distributed QoS mechanism, DRAFT+D supports two QoS metrics (throughput and delay) with two QoS models (absolute and relative) under two fairness constraints (utilitarian and temporal fairness) in the same mechanism at the same time a fully distributed manner. DRAFT+D is also equipped with safeguards against excessive traffic injection DRAFT+D operates as a fair-queuing mechanism that controls packet transmissions (a) by using a distributed deficit round robin mechanism and (b) by modifying the way Backoff Interval (BI) are calculated for packets of different traffic classes. Fair relative throughput support is achieved by calculating BI based on the throughput requirements. Absolute throughput and delay support are achieved by allocating sufficient shares of bandwidth to these types of traffic

    Interference Management in Dense 802.11 Networks

    Wireless networks are growing at a phenomenal rate. This growth is causing an overcrowding of the unlicensed RF spectrum, leading to increased interference between co-located devices. Existing decentralized medium access control (MAC) protocols (e.g. IEEE 802.11a/b/g standards) are poorly designed to handle interference in such dense wireless environments. This is resulting in networks with poor and unpredictable performance, especially for delay-sensitive applications such as voice and video. This dissertation presents a practical conflict-graph (CG) based approach to designing self-organizing enterprise wireless networks (or WLANs) where interference is centrally managed by the network infrastructure. The key idea is to use potential interference information (available in the CG) as an input to algorithms that optimize the parameters of the WLAN.We demonstrate this idea in three ways. First, we design a self-organizing enterprise WLAN and show how the system enhances performance over non-CG based schemes, in a high fidelity network simulator. Second, we build a practical system for conflict graph measurement that can precisely measure interference (for a given network configuration) in dense wireless environments. Finally, we demonstrate the practical benefits of the conflict graph system by using it in an optimization framework that manages associations and traffic for mobile VoIP clients in the enterprise. There are a number of contributions of this dissertation. First, we show the practical application of conflict graphs for infrastructure-based interference management in dense wireless networks. A prototype design exhibits throughput gains of up to 50% over traditional approaches. Second, we develop novel schemes for designing a conflict graph measurement system for enterprise WLANs that can detect interference at microsecond-level timescales and with little network overhead. This allows us to compute the conflict graph up to 400 times faster as compared to the current best practice proposed in the literature. The system does not require any modifications to clients or any specialized hardware for its operation. Although the system is designed for enterprise WLANs, the proposed techniques and corresponding results are applicable to other wireless systems as well (e.g. wireless mesh networks). Third, our work opens up the space for designing novel fine-grained interference-aware protocols/algorithms that exploit the ability to compute the conflict graph at small timescales. We demonstrate an instance of such a system with the design and implementation of an architecture that dynamically manages client associations and traffic in an enterprise WLAN. We show how mobile clients sustain uninterrupted and consistent VoIP call quality in the presence of background interference for the duration of their VoIP sessions

    An Analysis of Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) of Ultra Wideband(UWB) and IEEE 802.11A Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) Employing Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM)

    Military communications require the rapid deployment of mobile, high-bandwidth systems. These systems must provide anytime, anywhere capabilities with minimal interference to existing military, private, and commercial communications. Ultra Wideband (UWB) technology is being advanced as the next generation radio technology and has the potential to revolutionize indoor wireless communications. The ability of UWB to mitigate multipath fading, provide high-throughput data rates (e.g., greater than 100 Mbps), provide excellent signal penetration (e.g., through walls), and low implementation costs makes it an ideal technology for a wide range of private and public sector applications. Preliminary UWB studies conducted by The Institute for Telecommunications Science (ITS) and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) have discovered that potential exists for harmful interference to occur. While these studies have provided initial performance estimates, the interference effects of UWB transmissions on coexisting spectral users are largely unknown. This research characterizes the electromagnetic interference (EMI) effects of UWB on the throughput performance of an IEEE 802.11a ad-hoc network. Radiated measurements in an anechoic chamber investigate interference performance using three modulation schemes (BPSK, BPPM, and OOK) and four pulse repetition frequencies over two Unlicensed National Information Infrastructure (U-NII) channels. Results indicate that OOK and BPPM can degrade throughput performance by up to 20% at lower pulse repetition frequencies (PRFs) in lower U-NII channels. Minimal performance degradation (less than one percent) due to interference was observed for BPSK at the lower PRFs and higher U-NII channels

    Interaktive latenzkritische Anwendungen in mobilen Ad-hoc Netzen

    In this thesis we discuss the challenges that latency-sensitive interactive applications face in mobile ad-hoc networks. By using multi-player games as an example, we argue that the traditional client-server architecture is unsuitable for this new environment. We consequently create a novel communication architecture as well as quality of service mechanisms that can support the network requirements of such applications in mobile environments. By using a number of distributed zone servers that are selected and managed dynamically by our server selection algorithm, we provide a scalable approach that offers the necessary redundancy. Furthermore, we propose additional quality of service mechanisms to reduce latency and packet loss for interactive applications. We evaluate our approach through network simulation and realistic mobile gaming scenarios. The performance of our evaluation is checked against real-world measurements.In dieser Arbeit werden die Probleme und Herausforderungen von latenz-kritischen interactiven Computeranwendungen in mobilen Ad-hoc Netzen untersucht. Am Beispiel von Mehrbenutzercomputerspielen zeigen wir, dass traditionelle Client-Server Architekturen für diese neuen Umgebungen ungeeignet sind. Im Rahmen dieser Arbeit wird daher eine neue Kommunikationsarchitektur sowie verschiedene Mechanismen zur Erhöhung der Dienstgüte vorgeschlagen. Mit Hilfe von Zonenserver, die durch den Serverauswahlalgorithmus ausgesucht und verwaltet werden zeigen wir einen Ansatz auf, der sowohl bezüglich der Netzgröße skalierbar ist als auch die notwendige Redundanz bereitstellt. Wir zeigen die Funktionalität und die Leistung unseres Ansatzes mit Hilfe von Netzsimulationen bei denen realistische Szenarien für mobiles Spielen simuliert werden. Der hierbei benutze Netzsimulator wurde dafür auf Basis von eigenen Messungen verbessert und für das jeweilige Szenario passend eingestellt

    Achieving Soft Real-time Guarantees for Interactive Applications in Wireless Mesh Networks

    The use of 802.11-based multi-hop wireless mesh networks for Internet access is extensive and growing. The primary advantages of this approach are ease of deployment and lower cost. However, these networks are designed for web and e-mail applications. Highly interactive applications, such as multiplayer online games and VoIP, with their requirements for low delay, present significant challenges to these networks. In particular, the interaction between real-time traffic and TCP traffic tends to result in either a failure of the real-time traffic getting its needed QoS or the TCP traffic unnecessarily experiencing very poor throughput. To solve this problem we place real-time and TCP traffic into separate queues. We then rate-limit TCP traffic based on the average queue size of the local or remote real-time queues. Thus, TCP traffic is permitted to use excess bandwidth as long as it does not interfere with real-time traffic guarantees. We therefore call our scheme Real-time Queue-based Rate and Admission Control, RtQ-RAC. Extensive simulations using the network simulator, ns-2, demonstrate that our approach is effective in providing soft real-time support, while allowing efficient use of the remaining bandwidth for TCP traffic

    Smart PIN: performance and cost-oriented context-aware personal information network

    The next generation of networks will involve interconnection of heterogeneous individual networks such as WPAN, WLAN, WMAN and Cellular network, adopting the IP as common infrastructural protocol and providing virtually always-connected network. Furthermore, there are many devices which enable easy acquisition and storage of information as pictures, movies, emails, etc. Therefore, the information overload and divergent content’s characteristics make it difficult for users to handle their data in manual way. Consequently, there is a need for personalised automatic services which would enable data exchange across heterogeneous network and devices. To support these personalised services, user centric approaches for data delivery across the heterogeneous network are also required. In this context, this thesis proposes Smart PIN - a novel performance and cost-oriented context-aware Personal Information Network. Smart PIN's architecture is detailed including its network, service and management components. Within the service component, two novel schemes for efficient delivery of context and content data are proposed: Multimedia Data Replication Scheme (MDRS) and Quality-oriented Algorithm for Multiple-source Multimedia Delivery (QAMMD). MDRS supports efficient data accessibility among distributed devices using data replication which is based on a utility function and a minimum data set. QAMMD employs a buffer underflow avoidance scheme for streaming, which achieves high multimedia quality without content adaptation to network conditions. Simulation models for MDRS and QAMMD were built which are based on various heterogeneous network scenarios. Additionally a multiple-source streaming based on QAMMS was implemented as a prototype and tested in an emulated network environment. Comparative tests show that MDRS and QAMMD perform significantly better than other approaches
