    Detecting machine-translated subtitles in large parallel corpora

    Parallel corpora extracted from online repositories of movie and TV subtitles are employed in a wide range of NLP applications, from language modelling to machine translation and dialogue systems. However, the subtitles uploaded in such repositories exhibit varying levels of quality. A particularly difficult problem stems from the fact that a substantial number of these subtitles are not written by human subtitlers but are simply generated through the use of online translation engines. This paper investigates whether these machine-generated subtitles can be detected automatically using a combination of linguistic and extra-linguistic features. We show that a feedforward neural network trained on a small dataset of subtitles can detect machine-generated subtitles with a F1-score of 0.64. Furthermore, applying this detection model on an unlabelled sample of subtitles allows us to provide a statistical estimate for the proportion of subtitles that are machine-translated (or are at least of very low quality) in the full corpus

    A Novel and Robust Approach for Pro-Drop Language Translation

    A significant challenge for machine translation (MT) is the phenomena of dropped pronouns (DPs), where certain classes of pronouns are frequently dropped in the source language but should be retained in the target language. In response to this common problem, we propose a semi-supervised approach with a universal framework to recall missing pronouns in translation. Firstly, we build training data for DP generation in which the DPs are automatically labelled according to the alignment information from a parallel corpus. Secondly, we build a deep learning-based DP generator for input sentences in decoding when no corresponding references exist. More specifically, the generation has two phases: (1) DP position detection, which is modeled as a sequential labelling task with recurrent neural networks; and (2) DP prediction, which employs a multilayer perceptron with rich features. Finally, we integrate the above outputs into our statistical MT (SMT) system to recall missing pronouns by both extracting rules from the DP-labelled training data and translating the DP-generated input sentences. To validate the robustness of our approach, we investigate our approach on both Chinese–English and Japanese–English corpora extracted from movie subtitles. Compared with an SMT baseline system, experimental results show that our approach achieves a significant improvement of++1.58 BLEU points in translation performance with 66% F-score for DP generation accuracy for Chinese–English, and nearly++1 BLEU point with 58% F-score for Japanese–English. We believe that this work could help both MT researchers and industries to boost the performance of MT systems between pro-drop and non-pro-drop languages

    Dual Subtitles as Parallel Corpora

    <p>In this paper, we leverage the existence of dual subtitles as a source of parallel data. Dual subtitles present viewers with two languages simultaneously, and are generally aligned in the segment level, which removes the need to automatically perform this alignment. This is desirable as extracted parallel data does not contain alignment errors present in previous work that aligns different subtitle files for the same movie. We present a simple heuristic to detect and extract dual subtitles and show that more than 20 million sentence pairs can be extracted for the Mandarin-English language pair. We also show that extracting data from this source can be a viable solution for improving Machine Translation systems in the domain of subtitles.</p
