Downlink Training in Cell-Free Massive MIMO: A Blessing in Disguise
Cell-free Massive MIMO (multiple-input multiple-output) refers to a
distributed Massive MIMO system where all the access points (APs) cooperate to
coherently serve all the user equipments (UEs), suppress inter-cell
interference and mitigate the multiuser interference. Recent works demonstrated
that, unlike co-located Massive MIMO, the \textit{channel hardening} is, in
general, less pronounced in cell-free Massive MIMO, thus there is much to
benefit from estimating the downlink channel. In this study, we investigate the
gain introduced by the downlink beamforming training, extending the previously
proposed analysis to non-orthogonal uplink and downlink pilots. Assuming
single-antenna APs, conjugate beamforming and independent Rayleigh fading
channel, we derive a closed-form expression for the per-user achievable
downlink rate that addresses channel estimation errors and pilot contamination
both at the AP and UE side. The performance evaluation includes max-min
fairness power control, greedy pilot assignment methods, and a comparison
between achievable rates obtained from different capacity-bounding techniques.
Numerical results show that downlink beamforming training, although increases
pilot overhead and introduces additional pilot contamination, improves
significantly the achievable downlink rate. Even for large number of APs, it is
not fully efficient for the UE relying on the statistical channel state
information for data decoding.Comment: Published in IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications on August

Active Attack on User Load Achieving Pilot Design in Massive MIMO Networks
In this paper, we propose an active attacking strategy on a massive
multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) network, where the pilot sequences are
obtained using the user load-achieving pilot sequence design. The user
load-achieving design ensures that the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio
(SINR) requirements of all the users in the massive MIMO networks are
guaranteed even in the presence of pilot contamination. However, this design
has some vulnerabilities, such as one known pilot sequence and the correlation
among the pilot sequences, that may be exploited by active attackers. In this
work, we first identify the potential vulnerabilities in the user
load-achieving pilot sequence design and then, accordingly, develop an active
attacking strategy on the network. In the proposed attacking strategy, the
active attackers transmit known pilot sequences in the uplink training and
artificial noise in the downlink data transmission. Our examination
demonstrates that the per-cell user load region is significantly reduced by the
proposed attacking strategy. As a result of the reduced per-cell user load
region, the SINR requirements of all the users are no longer guaranteed in the
presence of the active attackers. Specifically, for the worst affected users
the SINR requirements may not be ensured even with infinite antennas at the
base station.Comment: Accepted in IEEE GlobeCOM 201
Cell-Free Massive MIMO versus Small Cells
A Cell-Free Massive MIMO (multiple-input multiple-output) system comprises a
very large number of distributed access points (APs)which simultaneously serve
a much smaller number of users over the same time/frequency resources based on
directly measured channel characteristics. The APs and users have only one
antenna each. The APs acquire channel state information through time-division
duplex operation and the reception of uplink pilot signals transmitted by the
users. The APs perform multiplexing/de-multiplexing through conjugate
beamforming on the downlink and matched filtering on the uplink. Closed-form
expressions for individual user uplink and downlink throughputs lead to max-min
power control algorithms. Max-min power control ensures uniformly good service
throughout the area of coverage. A pilot assignment algorithm helps to mitigate
the effects of pilot contamination, but power control is far more important in
that regard.
Cell-Free Massive MIMO has considerably improved performance with respect to
a conventional small-cell scheme, whereby each user is served by a dedicated
AP, in terms of both 95%-likely per-user throughput and immunity to shadow
fading spatial correlation. Under uncorrelated shadow fading conditions, the
cell-free scheme provides nearly 5-fold improvement in 95%-likely per-user
throughput over the small-cell scheme, and 10-fold improvement when shadow
fading is correlated.Comment: EEE Transactions on Wireless Communications, accepted for publicatio
A Survey of Physical Layer Security Techniques for 5G Wireless Networks and Challenges Ahead
Physical layer security which safeguards data confidentiality based on the
information-theoretic approaches has received significant research interest
recently. The key idea behind physical layer security is to utilize the
intrinsic randomness of the transmission channel to guarantee the security in
physical layer. The evolution towards 5G wireless communications poses new
challenges for physical layer security research. This paper provides a latest
survey of the physical layer security research on various promising 5G
technologies, including physical layer security coding, massive multiple-input
multiple-output, millimeter wave communications, heterogeneous networks,
non-orthogonal multiple access, full duplex technology, etc. Technical
challenges which remain unresolved at the time of writing are summarized and
the future trends of physical layer security in 5G and beyond are discussed.Comment: To appear in IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communication
Towards a Realistic Assessment of Multiple Antenna HCNs: Residual Additive Transceiver Hardware Impairments and Channel Aging
Given the critical dependence of broadcast channels by the accuracy of
channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT), we develop a general
downlink model with zero-forcing (ZF) precoding, applied in realistic
heterogeneous cellular systems with multiple antenna base stations (BSs).
Specifically, we take into consideration imperfect CSIT due to pilot
contamination, channel aging due to users relative movement, and unavoidable
residual additive transceiver hardware impairments (RATHIs). Assuming that the
BSs are Poisson distributed, the main contributions focus on the derivations of
the upper bound of the coverage probability and the achievable user rate for
this general model. We show that both the coverage probability and the user
rate are dependent on the imperfect CSIT and RATHIs. More concretely, we
quantify the resultant performance loss of the network due to these effects. We
depict that the uplink RATHIs have equal impact, but the downlink transmit BS
distortion has a greater impact than the receive hardware impairment of the
user. Thus, the transmit BS hardware should be of better quality than user's
receive hardware. Furthermore, we characterise both the coverage probability
and user rate in terms of the time variation of the channel. It is shown that
both of them decrease with increasing user mobility, but after a specific value
of the normalised Doppler shift, they increase again. Actually, the time
variation, following the Jakes autocorrelation function, mirrors this effect on
coverage probability and user rate. Finally, we consider space division
multiple access (SDMA), single user beamforming (SU-BF), and baseline
single-input single-output (SISO) transmission. A comparison among these
schemes reveals that the coverage by means of SU-BF outperforms SDMA in terms
of coverage.Comment: accepted in IEEE TV
Massive MIMO has Unlimited Capacity
The capacity of cellular networks can be improved by the unprecedented array
gain and spatial multiplexing offered by Massive MIMO. Since its inception, the
coherent interference caused by pilot contamination has been believed to create
a finite capacity limit, as the number of antennas goes to infinity. In this
paper, we prove that this is incorrect and an artifact from using simplistic
channel models and suboptimal precoding/combining schemes. We show that with
multicell MMSE precoding/combining and a tiny amount of spatial channel
correlation or large-scale fading variations over the array, the capacity
increases without bound as the number of antennas increases, even under pilot
contamination. More precisely, the result holds when the channel covariance
matrices of the contaminating users are asymptotically linearly independent,
which is generally the case. If also the diagonals of the covariance matrices
are linearly independent, it is sufficient to know these diagonals (and not the
full covariance matrices) to achieve an unlimited asymptotic capacity.Comment: To appear in IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications, 17 pages,

Large System Analysis of Power Normalization Techniques in Massive MIMO
Linear precoding has been widely studied in the context of Massive
multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) together with two common power
normalization techniques, namely, matrix normalization (MN) and vector
normalization (VN). Despite this, their effect on the performance of Massive
MIMO systems has not been thoroughly studied yet. The aim of this paper is to
fulfill this gap by using large system analysis. Considering a system model
that accounts for channel estimation, pilot contamination, arbitrary pathloss,
and per-user channel correlation, we compute tight approximations for the
signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio and the rate of each user equipment in
the system while employing maximum ratio transmission (MRT), zero forcing (ZF),
and regularized ZF precoding under both MN and VN techniques. Such
approximations are used to analytically reveal how the choice of power
normalization affects the performance of MRT and ZF under uncorrelated fading
channels. It turns out that ZF with VN resembles a sum rate maximizer while it
provides a notion of fairness under MN. Numerical results are used to validate
the accuracy of the asymptotic analysis and to show that in Massive MIMO,
non-coherent interference and noise, rather than pilot contamination, are often
the major limiting factors of the considered precoding schemes.Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures, Accepted for publication in the IEEE
