    This paper presents a policy-focused overview of relevant extant and ongoing research relating to the economic impact of knowledge transfer from higher education institutions. It highlights gaps in the current higher education research policy agenda on knowledge transfer as well as making suggestions where further research could most usefully inform policy. Consideration is also given within this paper to the development and use of metrics related to knowledge transfer activities of higher education institutions

    A Perceptive of Bibliometric Analysis on University-Industry Collaboration Using PRISMA Framework

    Collaboration between the university and industry can lead to successful knowledge transfer, technology transfer, and skill development. To improve the economy in the world, this collaboration advocates IPR, real-time research, and skilled students who are ready for the workforce. The bibliometric analysis methodology is employed in this study to examine, assess, and pinpoint the advantages and disadvantages of UIC. We searched for pertinent research papers for this study using the Google Scholar database and the search term "University-Industry Collaboration". Although there were many articles available, we only included one that had at least 21 citations and was published by Springer and Elsevier between 1998 and 2023. The introduction, methodology, result, and conclusion are the four sections that make up this paper. The present state of research, findings, gaps, and methodology are highlighted in this research article to help steer future investigations

    The role of universities in regional development: conceptual models and policy institutions in the UK, Sweden and Austria

    The literature on universities’ contributions to regional development is broad and diverse. A precise understanding of how regions may draw advantages from various university activities and the role of public policy institutions in promoting such activities is still missing. The aim of this paper is to provide a framework for analysing universities’ contributions to regional economic and societal development in differing national contexts and the policy institutions that underpin them. To do this, we review four conceptual models: the entrepreneurial university model, the regional innovation system (RIS) model, the mode 2 university model and the engaged university model. The paper demonstrates that these four models emphasize very different activities and outputs by which universities are seen to benefit regional economy and society. It is also shown that these models differ markedly with respect to the policy implications and practice. Analysing some of the public policy imperatives and incentives in the UK, Austria and Sweden, the paper highlights that in the UK, policies encourage all four university models. In contrast, in Sweden and Austria, policy institutions tend to privilege the RIS university model, whilst at the same time, there is some evidence for increasing support of the entrepreneurial university model

    Incentivizing knowledge exchange engagement: direct and indirect benefits of external engagement

    Engagement in knowledge exchange (KE) with external actors has become widely accepted as an integral mission of universities. However, research and teaching performance remain more important for career progression, while engagement activities are more weakly institutionalized. This raises the question of why academics participate in knowledge exchange engagement activities. This paper examines to what extent academics perceive that they are rewarded directly for KE by their university and to what extent they perceive to benefit in terms of their performance in other missions (research and teaching). Furthermore, we examine how these perceptions are associated with actual engagement behavior. We use data from a sample of academics in seven European universities to examine whether direct and indirect benefits from engagement are linked to engagement in a broad range of KE activities. The results suggest that direct university rewards are associated with less engagement in KE activities, while perceived indirect benefits are associated with more engagement.     How University Departmens respond to the Rise of Academic Entrepreneurship? The Pasteur's Quadrant Explanation

    This paper examines how universities can develop a new organizational structure to cope with the rise of academic entrepreneurship. By deploying the Pasteurian quadrant framework, knowledge creation and knowledge utilization in universities are measured. The relationships between university antecedents, Pasteurian orientation, and research performance are analyzed. A survey of university administrators and faculty members collected 634 responses from faculty members in 99 departments among 6 universities. The findings indicate that university antecedents of strategic flexibility and balancing commitment contribute to a greater Pasteurian orientation in university departments. The higher degree of Pasteurian orientation has significantly positive impacts on the performance both of knowledge creation and knowledge utilization. Moreover, the Pasteurian orientation acts as a mediator between university antecedents and research performance. Using cluster analysis, the departments are categorized into four groups. The differences between university- and department- factors in these four groups are examined and discussed. We conclude that not all university departments should move toward the Pasteurian group, and there are specific organizational and disciplinary factors resulting in mobility barriers among groups.     The governance of formal university–industry interactions: understanding the rationales for alternative models

    This article develops a conceptual framework to explain the economic rationale underpinning the choice of different modes of governance of formal university–industry interactions: personal contractual interactions, where the contract regulating the collaboration involves a firm and an individual academic researcher, and institutional interactions, where the relationship between the firm and the academic is mediated by the university. Although institutional interactions, for numerous reasons, have become more important, both governance modes are currently being implemented. We would argue that they have some important specificities that need to be understood if university–industry knowledge transfer is to be managed effectively and efficiently

    Individual and Organizational Aspects of University-Industry Relations in Nanotechnology: The Turkish Case

    Emerging nanotechnologies bring a new challenge for developing countries to improve knowledge and technology transfer between universities and firms. In developing countries, weaker ties between academia and the industry seem to be one of the main barriers to the dissemination of nanotechnology innovations. This study aims to understand individual and organizational factors affecting university-industry interactions in emerging nanotechnologies in a developing country context, namely Turkey. For this study, 181 questionnaires were collected from a sample of nano-science and nanotechnology academics who are currently employed by Turkish universities. The results provide that informal / interpersonal and research-related interactions are the most common forms of relationship between academics and firms.     Research in Kazakhstani universities: exploring faculty’s perspectives

    Research has been emphasized in several major Kazakhstani state policies on education and science development, and the importance of research lies in the promotion of innovation and economic development of the country. Within the research ecosystem of Kazakhstan, over 50% of researchers are faculty based in universities but there has been limited research done to illustrate their understanding and practice of research. This study seeks to examine faculty’s understanding and practice of research in Kazakhstani HEIs. A multiple case study was based on a university (which is a part of SPIID 2015-2019) in which faculty’s perspectives were explored across the three departments of hard sciences. This design was applied because it provides more extensive data to be collected and more profound understanding of the concept of research.
