    Performance analysis with network-enhanced complexities: On fading measurements, event-triggered mechanisms, and cyber attacks

For networked systems, especially large-scale systems such as multiagent systems and systems over sensor networks, the complexities are inevitably enhanced in terms of their degrees or intensities because of the usage of the communication networks. Therefore, it would be interesting to (1) examine how this kind of network-enhanced complexities affects the control or filtering performance; and (2) develop some suitable approaches for controller/filter design problems. In this paper, we aim to survey some recent advances on the performance analysis and synthesis with three sorts of fashionable network-enhanced complexities, namely, fading measurements, event-triggered mechanisms, and attack behaviors of adversaries. First, these three kinds of complexities are introduced in detail according to their engineering backgrounds, dynamical characteristic, and modelling techniques. Then, the developments of the performance analysis and synthesis issues for various networked systems are systematically reviewed.     On the Control of Microgrids Against Cyber-Attacks: A Review of Methods and Applications

    Nowadays, the use of renewable generations, energy storage systems (ESSs) and microgrids (MGs) has been developed due to better controllability of distributed energy resources (DERs) as well as their cost-effective and emission-aware operation. The development of MGs as well as the use of hierarchical control has led to data transmission in the communication platform. As a result, the expansion of communication infrastructure has made MGs as cyber-physical systems (CPSs) vulnerable to cyber-attacks (CAs). Accordingly, prevention, detection and isolation of CAs during proper control of MGs is essential. In this paper, a comprehensive review on the control strategies of microgrids against CAs and its defense mechanisms has been done. The general structure of the paper is as follows: firstly, MGs operational conditions, i.e., the secure or insecure mode of the physical and cyber layers are investigated and the appropriate control to return to a safer mode are presented. Then, the common MGs communication system is described which is generally used for multi-agent systems (MASs). Also, classification of CAs in MGs has been reviewed. Afterwards, a comprehensive survey of available researches in the field of prevention, detection and isolation of CA and MG control against CA are summarized. Finally, future trends in this context are clarified

    Distributed Fault-Tolerant Consensus Tracking Control of Multi-Agent Systems under Fixed and Switching Topologies

    This paper proposes a novel distributed fault-tolerant consensus tracking control design for multi-agent systems with abrupt and incipient actuator faults under fixed and switching topologies. The fault and state information of each individual agent is estimated by merging unknown input observer in the decentralized fault estimation hierarchy. Then, two kinds of distributed fault-tolerant consensus tracking control schemes with average dwelling time technique are developed to guarantee the mean-square exponential consensus convergence of multi-agent systems, respectively, on the basis of the relative neighboring output information as well as the estimated information in fault estimation. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed fault-tolerant consensus tracking control algorithm

    Resilience-oriented control and communication framework for cyber-physical microgrids

    Climate change drives the energy supply transition from traditional fossil fuel-based power generation to renewable energy resources. This transition has been widely recognised as one of the most significant developing pathways promoting the decarbonisation process toward a zero-carbon and sustainable society. Rapidly developing renewables gradually dominate energy systems and promote the current energy supply system towards decentralisation and digitisation. The manifestation of decentralisation is at massive dispatchable energy resources, while the digitisation features strong cohesion and coherence between electrical power technologies and information and communication technologies (ICT). Massive dispatchable physical devices and cyber components are interdependent and coupled tightly as a cyber-physical energy supply system, while this cyber-physical energy supply system currently faces an increase of extreme weather (e.g., earthquake, flooding) and cyber-contingencies (e.g., cyberattacks) in the frequency, intensity, and duration. Hence, one major challenge is to find an appropriate cyber-physical solution to accommodate increasing renewables while enhancing power supply resilience. The main focus of this thesis is to blend centralised and decentralised frameworks to propose a collaboratively centralised-and-decentralised resilient control framework for energy systems i.e., networked microgrids (MGs) that can operate optimally in the normal condition while can mitigate simultaneous cyber-physical contingencies in the extreme condition. To achieve this, we investigate the concept of "cyber-physical resilience" including four phases, namely prevention/upgrade, resistance, adaption/mitigation, and recovery. Throughout these stages, we tackle different cyber-physical challenges under the concept of microgrid ranging from a centralised-to-decentralised transitional control framework coping with cyber-physical out of service, a cyber-resilient distributed control methodology for networked MGs, a UAV assisted post-contingency cyber-physical service restoration, to a fast-convergent distributed dynamic state estimation algorithm for a class of interconnected systems.Open Acces

    Defense and Tolerance Technique Against Attacks and Faults on Leader-Following Multi-USVs

    This study explores the leader-following consensus tracking control issue of multiple unmanned surface vehicles (multi-USVs) in the presence of malicious connectivity-mixed attacks in the cyber layer, and concurrent output channel noises, sensor/actuator faults, and wave-induced disturbances in the physical layer. Sensor/actuator faults are initially modeled with unified incipient and abrupt features. Additionally, connectivity-mixed attacks are depicted using connectivity-paralyzed and connectivity-maintained topologies through nonoverlapping and switching iterations. The standardization and observer design in multi-USVs are incorporated to decouple the augmented dynamics and estimate unknown state, fault, and noise observations, and then a defense and fault-tolerant consensus tracking control approach is designed to accomplish the robustness to disturbances/noises, resilience to attacks, and tolerance to faults, simultaneously. The criteria for achieving leader-following exponential consensus tracking of multi-USVs with cyber-physical threats can be determined based on activation rate and attack frequency indicators. Comparative simulations outline the effectiveness and economy of the proposed defense and tolerance technique against sensor/actuator faults and cyber-attacks on multi-USVs

    Event-based security control for discrete-time stochastic systems

    This study is concerned with the event-based security control problem for a class of discrete-time stochastic systems with multiplicative noises subject to both randomly occurring denial-of-service (DoS) attacks and randomly occurring deception attacks. An event-triggered mechanism is adopted with hope to reduce the communication burden, where the measurement signal is transmitted only when a certain triggering condition is violated. A novel attack model is proposed to reflect the randomly occurring behaviours of the DoS attacks as well as the deception attacks within a unified framework via two sets of Bernoulli distributed white sequences with known conditional probabilities. A new concept of mean-square security domain is put forward to quantify the security degree. The authors aim to design an output feedback controller such that the closed-loop system achieves the desired security. By using the stochastic analysis techniques, some sufficient conditions are established to guarantee the desired security requirement and the control gain is obtained by solving some linear matrix inequalities with nonlinear constraints.     Distributed filtering of networked dynamic systems with non-gaussian noises over sensor networks: A survey

    summary:Sensor networks are regarded as a promising technology in the field of information perception and processing owing to the ease of deployment, cost-effectiveness, flexibility, as well as reliability. The information exchange among sensors inevitably suffers from various network-induced phenomena caused by the limited resource utilization and complex application scenarios, and thus is required to be governed by suitable resource-saving communication mechanisms. It is also noteworthy that noises in system dynamics and sensor measurements are ubiquitous and in general unknown but can be bounded, rather than follow specific Gaussian distributions as assumed in Kalman-type filtering. Particular attention of this paper is paid to a survey of recent advances in distributed filtering of networked dynamic systems with non-Gaussian noises over sensor networks. First, two types of widely employed structures of distributed filters are reviewed, the corresponding analysis is systematically addressed, and some interesting results are provided. The inherent purpose of adding consensus terms into the distributed filters is profoundly disclosed. Then, some representative models characterizing various network-induced phenomena are reviewed and their corresponding analytical strategies are exhibited in detail. Furthermore, recent results on distributed filtering with non-Gaussian noises are sorted out in accordance with different network-induced phenomena and system models. Another emphasis is laid on recent developments of distributed filtering with various communication scheduling, which are summarized based on the inherent characteristics of their dynamic behavior associated with mathematical models. Finally, the state-of-the-art of distributed filtering and challenging issues, ranging from scalability, security to applications, are raised to guide possible future research
