    Human in the Loop: Distributed Deep Model for Mobile Crowdsensing

    With the proliferation of mobile devices, crowdsensing has become an appealing technique to collect and process big data. Meanwhile, the rise of fifth generation wireless systems, especially the new cellular base stations with computing ability, brings about the revolutionary edge computing. Although many approaches regarding the mobile crowdsensing have emerged in the last few years, very few of them are focused on the combination of edge computing and crowdsensing. In this paper, we adopt the state-of-the-art edge computing method to solve the crowdsensing problem with the real-time sensing data, and more importantly, make human be in the loop again, in order to respect the users’ willing and privacy. A distributed deep learning model is adopted to extract features from the captured data, which is not only a compression process to reduce the communication cost, but an encryption procedure for safety protection. The proposed model enables the crowdsensing system to fully harness the computing capacity of edge nodes and devices, and obtain a strong data analysis ability to process the captured data. Simulations demonstrate that our approach is robust and efficient, and outperforms other strategies in several related tasks

    A DevOps approach to integration of software components in an EU research project

    We present a description of the development and deployment infrastructure being created to support the integration effort of HARNESS, an EU FP7 project. HARNESS is a multi-partner research project intended to bring the power of heterogeneous resources to the cloud. It consists of a number of different services and technologies that interact with the OpenStack cloud computing platform at various levels. Many of these components are being developed independently by different teams at different locations across Europe, and keeping the work fully integrated is a challenge. We use a combination of Vagrant based virtual machines, Docker containers, and Ansible playbooks to provide a consistent and up-to-date environment to each developer. The same playbooks used to configure local virtual machines are also used to manage a static testbed with heterogeneous compute and storage devices, and to automate ephemeral larger-scale deployments to Grid5000. Access to internal projects is managed by GitLab, and automated testing of services within Docker-based environments and integrated deployments within virtual-machines is provided by Buildbot

    Uncovering Bugs in Distributed Storage Systems during Testing (not in Production!)

    Testing distributed systems is challenging due to multiple sources of nondeterminism. Conventional testing techniques, such as unit, integration and stress testing, are ineffective in preventing serious but subtle bugs from reaching production. Formal techniques, such as TLA+, can only verify high-level specifications of systems at the level of logic-based models, and fall short of checking the actual executable code. In this paper, we present a new methodology for testing distributed systems. Our approach applies advanced systematic testing techniques to thoroughly check that the executable code adheres to its high-level specifications, which significantly improves coverage of important system behaviors. Our methodology has been applied to three distributed storage systems in the Microsoft Azure cloud computing platform. In the process, numerous bugs were identified, reproduced, confirmed and fixed. These bugs required a subtle combination of concurrency and failures, making them extremely difficult to find with conventional testing techniques. An important advantage of our approach is that a bug is uncovered in a small setting and witnessed by a full system trace, which dramatically increases the productivity of debugging

    FireGrid: An e-infrastructure for next-generation emergency response support

    Peer reviewed paper published in Journal of Parallel and Distributed Computing.The FireGrid project aims to harness the potential of advanced forms of computation to support the response to large-scale emergencies (with an initial focus on the response to fires in the built environment). Computational models of physical phenomena are developed, and then deployed and computed on High Performance Computing resources to infer incident conditions by assimilating live sensor data from an emergency in real time–or, in the case of predictive models, faster-than-real time. The results of these models are then interpreted by a knowledge-based reasoning scheme to provide decision support information in appropriate terms for the emergency responder. These models are accessed over a Grid from an agent-based system, of which the human responders form an integral part.     Integration of a Canine Agent in a Wireless Sensor Network for Information Gathering in Search and Rescue Missions

    Search and rescue operations in the context of emergency response to human or natural disasters have the major goal of finding potential victims in the shortest possible time. Multi-agent teams, which can include specialized human respondents, robots and canine units, complement the strengths and weaknesses of each agent, like all-terrain mobility or capability to locate human beings. However, efficient coordination of heterogeneous agents requires specific means to locate the agents, and to provide them with the information they require to complete their mission. The major contribution of this work is an application of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) to gather information from a multi-agent team and to make it available to the rest of the agents while keeping coverage. In particular, a canine agent has been equipped with a mobile node installed on a harness, providing information about the dog’s location as well as gas levels. The configuration of the mobile node allows for flexible arrangement of the system, being able to integrate static as well as mobile nodes. The gathered information is available at an external database, so that the rest of the agents and the control center can use it in real time. The proposed scheme has been tested in realistic scenarios during search and rescue exercises
