    Dear Colleagues, I am very happy to have this Special Issue of the journal Energies on the topic of Design and Control of Electrical Motor Drives published. Electrical motor drives are widely used in the industry, automation, transportation, and home appliances. Indeed, rolling mills, machine tools, high-speed trains, subway systems, elevators, electric vehicles, air conditioners, all depend on electrical motor drives.However, the production of effective and practical motors and drives requires flexibility in the regulation of current, torque, flux, acceleration, position, and speed. Without proper modeling, drive, and control, these motor drive systems cannot function effectively.To address these issues, we need to focus on the design, modeling, drive, and control of different types of motors, such as induction motors, permanent magnet synchronous motors, brushless DC motors, DC motors, synchronous reluctance motors, switched reluctance motors, flux-switching motors, linear motors, and step motors.Therefore, relevant research topics in this field of study include modeling electrical motor drives, both in transient and in steady-state, and designing control methods based on novel control strategies (e.g., PI controllers, fuzzy logic controllers, neural network controllers, predictive controllers, adaptive controllers, nonlinear controllers, etc.), with particular attention to transient responses, load disturbances, fault tolerance, and multi-motor drive techniques. This Special Issue include original contributions regarding recent developments and ideas in motor design, motor drive, and motor control. The topics include motor design, field-oriented control, torque control, reliability improvement, advanced controllers for motor drive systems, DSP-based sensorless motor drive systems, high-performance motor drive systems, high-efficiency motor drive systems, and practical applications of motor drive systems.     Robust-Neural Observer Design for Discrete-Time Uncertain Non-Affine Nonlinear System

    This paper proposed a new Nonlinear Discrete-Time Robust-Neural Observer (DTRNO) which capable to give estimation for the states of Discrete-Time Uncertain Non-affine Non-linear Systems in presence of external disturbances. The Neural network is a kind of discrete-time Multi Layered Perceptron (MLP) which Trained with an Extended Kalman-Filter (EKF) based algorithm, which this neural observer is robust in presence of external and internal uncertainties, using a parallel configuration.This work includes the stability proof of the estimation error on the basis of the Lyapunov approach, and for demonstrate observer performance an Uncertain Non-affine Nonlinear Systems have been simulated to formulations validate the theoretical.     Jedan novi postupak estimacije brzine vrtnje vektorski upravljanog asinkronog motora zasnovan na adaptivnom sustavu s referentnim modelom i neuronskim mrežama

    This paper proposes a new sensorless technique for induction motor drives based on a hybrid MRAS-neural technique, which improves a previously developed neural MRAS based sensorless method. In this paper the open-loop integration in the reference model is performed by an adaptive neural integrator, enhanced here by means of a speed-varying filter transfer function. The adaptive model is based on a more accurate discrete current model based on the modified Euler integration, with a resulting more stable behaviour in the field weakening region. The adaptive model is further trained on-line by a generalized least squares technique, the MCA EXIN + neuron, in which a parameterized learning algorithm is used. As a consequence, the speed estimation presents an improved convergence with higher accuracy and shorter settling time, because of the better transient behaviour of the neuron. A test bench has been set up to verify the methodology experimentally and the results prove its goodness at very low speeds (below 4 rad/s) and in zero-speed operation.U članku se predlaže novi postupak estimacije brzine vrtnje elektromotornog pogona s vektorski upravljanim asinkronim motorom. Postupak se zasniva na hibridnom adaptivnom sustavu s referentnim modelom (MRAS) i neuronskim mrežama. Takav postupak poboljšava prethodno razvijeni estimacijski postupak također zasnovan na »neuronskom MRAS-u«. U radu je realizirana integracija u otvorenoj petlji u referentnom modelu pomoću adaptivnog neuronskog integratora unaprijeđenog s filtrom čija prijenosna funkcija ovisi o brzini motora. Adaptivni je model zasnovan na točnijem diskretnom strujnom modelu motora dobivenom modificiranom Eulerovom integracijom, što rezultira stabilnijim vladanju pogona u režimu slabljenja polja. Adaptivni je model nadalje on-line obučavan korištenjem poopćene metode najmanjih kvadrata (»MCA EXIN+neuron« postupak) pri čemu se koristi parametrirani algoritam učenja. Zbog boljeg ponašanja neurona u dinamičkim stanjima poboljšava se konvergencija estimacije brzine s većom točnošću i manjim vremenom smirivanja. Za eksperimentalnu provjeru predložene metode izgrađena je laboratorijska maketa. Dobiveni rezultati potvrđuju valjanost metode na veoma niskim brzinama (ispod 4 rad/s) i u režimu nulte brzine

    Introduction to State Estimation of High-Rate System Dynamics

    Engineering systems experiencing high-rate dynamic events, including airbags, debris detection, and active blast protection systems, could benefit from real-time observability for enhanced performance. However, the task of high-rate state estimation is challenging, in particular for real-time applications where the rate of the observer’s convergence needs to be in the microsecond range. This paper identifies the challenges of state estimation of high-rate systems and discusses the fundamental characteristics of high-rate systems. A survey of applications and methods for estimators that have the potential to produce accurate estimations for a complex system experiencing highly dynamic events is presented. It is argued that adaptive observers are important to this research. In particular, adaptive data-driven observers are advantageous due to their adaptability and lack of dependence on the system model

    Design and Implementation of an Electric Differential for Traction Application

    International audienceThe use of an Electric Differential (ED) constitutes a technological advance in vehicle design along with the concept of more electric vehicles. EDs have the advantage of replacing loose and heavy mechanical differentials and transmissions with lighter and smaller electric motors directly coupled to the wheels via a single gear or an in-wheel motor. This paper deals then with an Electric Differential System (EDS) for an Electric Vehicle (EV) directly driven by dual induction motors in the rear wheels. A sensorless control technique is preferred to a position or speed encoder-based control one to reduce the overall cost and to improve the reliability. The EDS main feature is the robustness improvement against system uncertainties and road conditions. The EDS control performances are validated through experiments on a dSPACE-based test bench. The experimental results show that the proposed controller is able to track the speed reference and the curvature angle with good static and dynamic performances

    Adaptive Critic Based Neuro-Observer

    A new Neural Network (NN) based observer design method for nonlinear systems represented by nonlinear dynamics and linear/nonlinear measurement is proposed in this paper. In this new approach, as the first step, the observer design problem is changed into a controller design problem by establishing the error dynamics, and then the Adaptive Critic (AC) based approach is applied on this error dynamics to design a \u27controller\u27, such that the errors are driven to zero. The resulting observer has inherent robustness from the AC based design approach. Some simulations are presented to illustrate the effectiveness of this approach

    Neural network fault diagnosis of a trolling motor based on feature reduction techniques for an unmanned surface vehicle

    This article presents a novel approach to the diagnosis of unbalanced faults in a trolling motor under stationary operating conditions. The trolling motor being typically of that used as the propulsion system for an unmanned surface vehicle, the diagnosis approach is based on the use of discrete wavelet transforms as a feature extraction tool and a time-delayed neural network for fault classification. The time-delayed neural network classifies between healthy and faulty conditions of the trolling motor by analysing the stator current and vibration. To overcome feature redundancy, which affects diagnosis accuracy, several feature reduction methods have been tested, and the orthogonal fuzzy neighbourhood discriminant analysis approach is found to be the most effective method. Four faulty conditions were analysed under laboratory conditions, where one of the blades causing damage to the trolling motor is cut into 10%, 25%, half and then into full to simulate the effects of propeller blades being damaged partly or fully. The results obtained from the real-time simulation demonstrate the effectiveness and reliability of the proposed methodology in classifying the different faults faster and accurately
