The benefits of resource discovery for publishers: a librarian’s view
A core goal of librarians is to maximize usage of the content to which their libraries subscribe. Webscale or resource discovery systems offer a single search box for library users to access subscribed content. This article examines usage data at the University of Huddersfield to show how resource discovery has helped to increase the usage of publisher content, which has been made available to discovery vendors and considers the implications for publishers who are yet to do this. The article concludes that resource discovery systems have effectively levelled the playing field, allowing small to medium sized publishers to make content discoverable to users, and encourages publishers who do not have their content indexed in resource discovery systems to speak to discovery service vendor in order to do so at the earliest opportunity
Personalizable Service Discovery in Pervasive Systems
Today, telecom providers are facing changing challenges.
To stay ahead in the competition and provide market
leading offerings, carriers need to enable a global ecosystem of
third party independent application developers to deliver converged
services. This is the aim of leveraging a open standardsbased
service delivery platform. To identify and to cope with
those challenges is the main target of the EU funded project
IST DAIDALOS II. And a central point to satisfy the changing
user needs is the provision of a well working, user friendly and
personalized service discovery. This paper describes our work
in the project on a middleware in a framework for pervasive
service usage. We have designed an architecture for it, that
enables full transparency to the user, grants high compatibility
and extendability by a modular and pluggable conception and
allows for interoperability with most known service discovery
protocols. Our Multi-Protocol Service Discovery and the Four
Phases Service Filtering concept enabling personalization should
allow for the best possible results in service discovery
A Comparative Study of U.S. and British Approaches to Discovery Conflicts: Achieving a Uniform System of Extraterritorial Discovery
This note examines the international efforts undertaken by nations collectively and individually to resolve extraterritorial discovery conflicts. Discussed are the international efforts to achieve uniform discovery international discovery standards. The U.S. and U.K. systems and their joint efforts to establish a set of legal tenets and norms to resolve costly extraterritorial discovery disputes
A Taxonomy of Self-configuring Service Discovery Systems
We analyze the fundamental concepts and issues in service
discovery. This analysis places service discovery in the context of distributed
systems by describing service discovery as a third generation
naming system. We also describe the essential architectures and the
functionalities in service discovery. We then proceed to show how service
discovery fits into a system, by characterizing operational aspects.
Subsequently, we describe how existing state of the art performs service
discovery, in relation to the operational aspects and functionalities, and
identify areas for improvement
Information Surfaces in Systems Biology and Applications to Engineering Sustainable Agriculture
Systems biology of plants offers myriad opportunities and many challenges in
modeling. A number of technical challenges stem from paucity of computational
methods for discovery of the most fundamental properties of complex dynamical
systems. In systems engineering, eigen-mode analysis have proved to be a
powerful approach. Following this philosophy, we introduce a new theory that
has the benefits of eigen-mode analysis, while it allows investigation of
complex dynamics prior to estimation of optimal scales and resolutions.
Information Surfaces organizes the many intricate relationships among
"eigen-modes" of gene networks at multiple scales and via an adaptable
multi-resolution analytic approach that permits discovery of the appropriate
scale and resolution for discovery of functions of genes in the model plant
Arabidopsis. Applications are many, and some pertain developments of crops that
sustainable agriculture requires.Comment: 24 Pages, DoCEIS 1
Recursion Aware Modeling and Discovery For Hierarchical Software Event Log Analysis (Extended)
This extended paper presents 1) a novel hierarchy and recursion extension to
the process tree model; and 2) the first, recursion aware process model
discovery technique that leverages hierarchical information in event logs,
typically available for software systems. This technique allows us to analyze
the operational processes of software systems under real-life conditions at
multiple levels of granularity. The work can be positioned in-between reverse
engineering and process mining. An implementation of the proposed approach is
available as a ProM plugin. Experimental results based on real-life (software)
event logs demonstrate the feasibility and usefulness of the approach and show
the huge potential to speed up discovery by exploiting the available hierarchy.Comment: Extended version (14 pages total) of the paper Recursion Aware
Modeling and Discovery For Hierarchical Software Event Log Analysis. This
Technical Report version includes the guarantee proofs for the proposed

A cognitive architecture for learning in reactive environments
Previous research in machine learning has viewed the process of empirical discovery as search through a space of 'theoretical' terms. In this paper, we propose a problem space for empirical discovery, specifying six complementary operators for defining new terms that ease the statement of empirical laws. The six types of terms include: numeric attributes (such as PV/T); intrinsic properties (such as mass); composite objects (such as pairs of colliding balls); classes of objects (such as acids and alkalis); composite relations (such as chemical reactions); and classes of relations (such as combustion/oxidation). We review existing machine discovery systems in light of this framework, examining which parts of the problem space were, covered by these systems. Finally, we outline an integrated discovery system (IDS) we are constructing that includes all six of the operators and which should be able to discover a broad range of empirical laws

A Novel Device-to-Device Discovery Scheme for Underlay Cellular Networks
Tremendous growing demand for high data rate services such as video, gaming
and social networking in wireless cellular systems, attracted researchers'
attention to focus on developing proximity services. In this regard,
device-to-device (D2D) communications as a promising technology for future
cellular systems, plays crucial rule. The key factor in D2D communication is
providing efficient peer discovery mechanisms in ultra dense networks. In this
paper, we propose a centralized D2D discovery scheme by employing a signaling
algorithm to exchange D2D discovery messages between network entities. In this
system, potential D2D pairs share uplink cellular users' resources with
collision detection, to initiate a D2D links. Stochastic geometry is used to
analyze system performance in terms of success probability of the transmitted
signal and minimum required time slots for the proposed discovery scheme.
Extensive simulations are used to evaluate the proposed system performance.Comment: Accepted for publication in 25'th Iranian Conference on Electrical
