    Time-Dependent Influence Measurement in Citation Networks

    In every scientific discipline, researchers face two common dilemmas: where to find bleeding-edge papers and where to publish their own articles. We propose to answer these questions by looking at the influence between communities, e.g. conferences or journals. The influential conferences are those which papers are heavily cited by other conferences, i.e. they are visible, significant and inspiring. For the task of finding such influential places-to-publish, we introduce a Running Influence model that aims to discover pairwise influence between communities and evaluate the overall influence of each considered community. We have taken into consideration time aspects such as intensity of papers citations over time and difference of conferences starting years. The community influence analysis is tested on real-world data of Computer Science conferences

    Previous studies on social networking sites have failed to address comprehensively the level of efficacy and role of peer influences in the rise in membership levels of this new communication innovation. This study assessed the level of social influences at play in college students` decision to participate on Facebook. Online and postal surveys were sent to undergraduate students of a Northeastern institution of higher education to obtain self-reported of levels of perceived peer pressure influencing their participation on Facebook. The data collected were used to test a new theory of social conformity. No relationship was found between time spent on Facebook in a typical week and peer pressure

    Influence Maximization in Social Networks: A Survey

    Online social networks have become an important platform for people to communicate, share knowledge and disseminate information. Given the widespread usage of social media, individuals' ideas, preferences and behavior are often influenced by their peers or friends in the social networks that they participate in. Since the last decade, influence maximization (IM) problem has been extensively adopted to model the diffusion of innovations and ideas. The purpose of IM is to select a set of k seed nodes who can influence the most individuals in the network. In this survey, we present a systematical study over the researches and future directions with respect to IM problem. We review the information diffusion models and analyze a variety of algorithms for the classic IM algorithms. We propose a taxonomy for potential readers to understand the key techniques and challenges. We also organize the milestone works in time order such that the readers of this survey can experience the research roadmap in this field. Moreover, we also categorize other application-oriented IM studies and correspondingly study each of them. What's more, we list a series of open questions as the future directions for IM-related researches, where a potential reader of this survey can easily observe what should be done next in this field

    A theoretical framework for constructive interpersonal leadership relations in knowledge-based organisations

    Text in English with abstracts in English, Afrikaans and VendaIn this qualitative study, the research objective was to present a theoretical framework for the phenomenon of interpersonal leadership relations (denoting both the dyadic relationship between two leader/followers and the leadership communication taking place in the dyad) in knowledge-based organisational contexts. It is posited that the interpersonal leader-follower dyad (LFD) may be viewed from a systems theory perspective as a system consisting of two system parts (individuals). These individuals are labelled ‘leader/followers’ to emphasise their mutual interdependence, and to indicate that these roles may be interchangeable, based on the knowledge needs in a particular situation (in line with the tenets of shared leadership). The dyadic system is influenced by its environment, the organisational context. However, the primary focus of this study is on interpersonal leadership communication as symbolic interaction between the leader/followers in the LFD. These three systemic levels are represented as major themes in the model resulting from this study: Theme 1 – an organisational environment that supports constructive interpersonal leadership relations (ILR); Theme 2 – symbolic interaction in the LFD; and Theme 3 – personal attributes that enhance ILR. The data were collected from two convenience samples. In-depth, semi-structured interviews were conducted with participants in Sample 1, while questionnaires were used to collect data from Sample 2. In both cases, thematic analysis was used to analyse and interpret the data. The major contribution of the study is the resulting theoretical framework of ILR, which comprises a theoretically based definition of ILR; a generic model of ILR; and current guidelines for fostering constructive ILR in knowledge-based contexts, with reference to the three systemic levels. The following definition was phrased based on the study: Constructive interpersonal leadership relations (ILR) in a knowledge-based organisational context is a dyadic process of symbolic communication between two expert leader/followers who mutually influence each other and share meaning to strengthen their relationship and to collaboratively transfer and apply knowledge to achieve organisational goals. In terms of the environment, it was found that organisational leaders should actively model and promote the following: a collaborative leadership concept, workplace spirituality, cultural inclusivity, and adaptation to advancing communication technologies. Regarding symbolic interaction in the LFD, the following communication practices were found to be central to constructive ILR: active listening, supporting followers as unique individuals, respectful communication, considering followers’ input, facilitating constructive redefinition of the other leader/follower’s self, role-taking (taking the perspective of the other leader/follower’s role), awareness of attribution, conflict management through non-threatening, respectful and preferably face-to-face discussion, facilitating a sense of meaning or purpose at work for the other leader/follower, and fostering constructive relationship properties such as trust. It was found that ILR may produce system outputs into the organisation that contribute to the organisational culture and climate, job performance, employee morale and engagement, and staff retention. Personal attributes were organised into personal values and competencies that support ILR. The most important personal values were identified as honesty, love or supportiveness, respect, relationships or engagement, trust, and professional excellence. Essential competencies were identified as listening skills, emotional communication competencies (particularly self-awareness, self-reflection and attending to others’ emotions), engagement skills, conflict management skills, and multicultural competency (including generational skills).In hierdie kwalitatiewe studie word ’n teoretiese raamwerk voorgelê vir die verskynsel ‘interpersoonlike leierskapsverhoudings‘ (verwysende na beide die diadiese verhouding tussen twee leier/volgelinge en die leierskapskommunikasie wat in die diade plaasvind) in kennisgebaseerde organisatoriese kontekste. Die uitgangspunt is dat die interpersoonlike leier-volgeling-diade (LVD) vanuit ‘n sisteemteoretiese perspektief beskou kan word as ‘n sisteem wat uit twee sisteemdele (individue) bestaan. Hierdie individue word ‘leier/volgelinge‘ genoem om hulle wedersydse interafhanklikheid te beklemtoon; en om aan te toon dat hierdie rolle uitruilbaar mag wees, afhangende van die kennisbehoeftes in ’n gegewe situasie (met verwysing na die teorie van gedeelde leierskap). As ’n sisteem word die LVD ook deur die omringende omgewing of organisatoriese konteks beïnvloed. Die primêre fokus van hierdie studie is egter op interpersoonlike leierskapskommunikasie as simboliese interaksie tussen die leier/volgelinge in die LVD. Hierdie drie sistemiese vlakke word in hierdie studie deur die hooftemas in die studie verteenwoordig en ook as sulks in die voortvloeiende model uitgebeeld: Tema 1 – ’n organisatoriese omgewing wat konstruktiewe interpersoonlike leierskapsverhoudings (ILV) ondersteun; Tema 2 – simboliese interaksie in die LVD; en Tema 3 – persoonlike eienskappe wat ILV bevorder. Die teoretiese raamwerk van ILV bestaan uit die volgende: ’n teoreties gefundeerde definisie van ILV; ’n generiese model van ILV; en ’n raamwerk van huidige riglyne vir die kweek van konstruktiewe ILV in kennisgebaseerde kontekste, met verwysing na die drie sistemiese vlakke van omgewing, diade en individuele leier/volgelinge. Die volgende definisie is op grond van die navorsingsresultate geformuleer: Konstruktiewe interpersoonlike leierskapsverhoudings (ILV) in ’n kennisgebaseerde organisatoriese konteks is ’n diadiese proses van simboliese kommunikasie tussen twee kundige leier/volgelinge wat mekaar wedersyds beïnvloed en betekenis deel om hulle verhouding te versterk en kennis samewerkend oor te dra en aan te wend om organisatoriese doelwitte te bereik. In terme van die organisatoriese omgewing is bevind dat organisatoriese leiers, veral senior leiers, die volgende aktief moet modelleer en bevorder in die organisasie: ’n samewerkende leierskapskonsep, spiritualiteit in die werkplek, kulturele insluiting, en aanpassing by vooruitgang in kommunikasietegnologie. Met verwysing na simboliese interaksie in die LVD is die volgende praktyke bevind as sentraal tot konstruktiewe ILV: aktiewe luistergedrag, die ondersteuning van volgelinge as unieke individue, respekvolle kommunikasie, die inagneming van volgelinge se insette, die fasilitering van die konstruktiewe herdefiniëring van die ander leier/volgeling se self, rol-inneming (die inneem van die rolperspektief van die ander leier/volgeling), bewustheid van attribusie, die bestuur van konflik deur nie-bedreigende, respekvolle en – waar moontlik – aangesig-tot-aangesig bespreking, die fasilitering van ’n sin van doel of betekenis by die werk vir die ander leier/volgeling, en die kweek van konstruktiewe verhoudingseienskappe (vertroue, uitruilbare leier/volgeling-rolle en wedersydse invloed is geïdentifiseer as belangrik). Dit is ook bevind dat ILV sisteemuitsette in die organisasie mag genereer wat bydra tot die organisatoriese kultuur en klimaat, werkprestasie, werknemers se moreel en betrokkenheid, en personeelbehoud. Persoonlike eienskappe is verdeel in waardes en vaardighede wat ILV ondersteun. Die belangrikste waardes is geïdentifiseer as eerlikheid, liefde, respek, verhoudings, vertroue, en professionele uitnemendheid. Die volgende vaardighede is geïdentifiseer as noodsaaklik: luistervaardighede, emosionele kommunikasievaardighede (met spesifieke verwysing na selfbewussyn, selfrefleksie en aandag aan ander se emosies), betrekkingsvaardighede, konflikbestuursvaardighede, en multi-kulturele vaardighede (wat generasievaardighede insluit).     “No decision about me without me.” Do people with an acquired communication disability think that they can influence strategic healthcare decision-making?

    This thesis presents my Professional Doctorate research and practice development concerning the extent to which public participation leads to influence in strategic healthcare planning. The decision to undertake this study was informed by my observations of practice as a Speech and Language Therapist and my personal experiences as a citizen of the United Kingdom. My personal narrative is used to show how integral my own beliefs and understandings are to the topic of my study and my embodiment in the role of researcher. The context for my research was the National Health Service (NHS) public engagement agenda and of specific focus within this context were the views of Dorset residents who are living with an acquired communication disability (ACD). In particular, I have sought to discover how this group of people frame their thoughts regarding their ability to influence NHS strategic decision-making. This is an aspect of NHS public engagement activity which has not been previously investigated. As a counter-perspective, the views of NHS commissioners in Dorset regarding their ability to be open to the influence of others were also gathered. Influence mapping activities were used with both sets of participants and the resultant associated conversations were recorded. An ethnomethodological ethnographic framework was chosen to analyse the conversations and explore the ‘ethno-methods’ or taken-for-granted practical reasoning which each participant used to situate their views. This analytical approach is one which has been little used to investigate participatory constructs and one which I found merits further development. My research findings indicate that participants with ACD used their knowledge of the world as members of UK society to frame their understanding of their power to influence and that their communication disability was not necessarily the most salient determinant within this. The ability of the NHS commissioning structure to accommodate citizen input was seen to be limited by participant groups. Each of us deploys our stock of common-sense knowledge and understanding to organise our approach to situations and because it is taken for granted by each of us it is very rarely interrogated. Further research is needed to explore how a better understanding of these hidden methods might be used to improve the NHS participatory environment and to grow public confidence in the purpose of participation

    The contributions summarized in this volume have been presented at the 16th Congress of the European Association of Work and Organizational Psychology (EAWOP) in Münster, Germany, May 22-25th, 2013. The bi-annual EAWOP Congress is one of the largest international conferences of work and organizational psychologists worldwide, and the largest in Europe. For the current congress, more than 1.700 abstract were submitted that were subject to a double-blind review process. The theme of the EAWOP Congress 2013 “Imagine the future world: How do we want to work tomorrow?” particularly focused on new challenges that we experience in work organizations today and tomorrow, such as globalization and digitalization of economic processes, flexible work with remote partners, demographic changes, financial turbulences, and growing climatic problems. Providing new and innovative ideas on mastering these challenges, this congress was not only a stimulating event for the community of work and organizational psychologists, but also offers new ideas and concepts for decision makers in related disciplines, consultancies, and politics

    Pode parecer um paradoxo falar de qualidade de vida quando a turbulência dos mercados tem gerado crises sucessivas nos últimos anos, crises essas que têm remetido os indivíduos para a procura de soluções de vida focadas no evitamento de problemas, parecendo a qualidade um luxo a que não têm direito. Porém, os momentos conturbados são também oportunidades de reformulação do que estava antes estabelecido. As crises económicas e financeiras que têm assolado o mundo nos últimos anos, são certamente um alerta para a necessidade de reformulação de um status quo que sobrevaloriza os resultados em detrimento dos processos. Emergem então oportunidades de olhar para aquilo em que estamos a tornar a nossa vida, e de procurar alternativas que facilitem a valorização do aqui e agora e não apenas do futuro que virá um dia. E a vida interessa-nos em todas as suas dimensões: física, emocional, social, intelectual e espiritual. Na edição de 2011 do Interfaces da Psicologia, teremos como pano de fundo esta reflexão, enquadrada naquele que tem sido o espírito destes eventos. Esse espírito pode ser configurado em duas ideias fundamentais. A primeira, que a especialização progressiva do conhecimento vem ampliar as áreas de intersecção entre saberes, e requerer o diálogo cooperativo entre campos do conhecimento, para a construção da realidade social e para a escolha deliberada do percurso de desenvolvimento das sociedades humanas. A segunda, que a diversidade é hoje uma constante nos ambientes de acção quotidiana dos indivíduos, apelando à flexibilidade mental e à aceitação das diferenças, senão mesmo à sua estimulação. Assim, as temáticas a abordar situam-se em todos os campos do conhecimento, desde que perspectivadas na sua interface com a psicologia e focadas na temática geral do evento. Lançamos por isso o repto a todos aqueles que vêem nesta reflexão um esforço que vale a pena, a apresentarem os seus trabalhos de modo que, juntamente com um desafiador conjunto de convidados, possamos produzir pensamento relevante sobre a qualidade de vida e as vidas de qualidade que queremos para nós, sem que fiquem comprometidas as legítimas aspirações das gerações vindouras
