    Magnetic and Newtonian noises in Advanced Virgo: evaluation and mitigation strategies

    In the present study, I table the first detailed estimation of the magnetic noise contribution to the Advanced Virgo sensitivity to gravitational waves. I tackle the topic by performing experimental assessments and numerical finite element simulations, all accompanied by careful data analysis. Results suggest that the magnetic noise impact for Advanced Virgo is not dramatic, but it will eventually be a considerable issue once the detector will approach its final design. In anticipation of that, I propose a mitigation strategy based on passive magnetic field shielding. In the second part, I deal with seismic newtonian noise, focusing on two crucial aspects involving the noise cancellation pipeline. These are the choice of the subtraction filter and the optimization of the seismic sensor array placement. The former issue required the definition of a machine learning algorithm based on deep neural networks, and its fine tuning. Results give some indication of good performances compared to the standard Wiener filter approach. The problem of the sensors deployment is instead addressed with the finite element analysis of the actual Virgo infrastructure and underground soil layers surrounding the test masses

    Objective Assessment of Machine Learning Algorithms for Speech Enhancement in Hearing Aids

    Speech enhancement in assistive hearing devices has been an area of research for many decades. Noise reduction is particularly challenging because of the wide variety of noise sources and the non-stationarity of speech and noise. Digital signal processing (DSP) algorithms deployed in modern hearing aids for noise reduction rely on certain assumptions on the statistical properties of undesired signals. This could be disadvantageous in accurate estimation of different noise types, which subsequently leads to suboptimal noise reduction. In this research, a relatively unexplored technique based on deep learning, i.e. Recurrent Neural Network (RNN), is used to perform noise reduction and dereverberation for assisting hearing-impaired listeners. For noise reduction, the performance of the deep learning model was evaluated objectively and compared with that of open Master Hearing Aid (openMHA), a conventional signal processing based framework, and a Deep Neural Network (DNN) based model. It was found that the RNN model can suppress noise and improve speech understanding better than the conventional hearing aid noise reduction algorithm and the DNN model. The same RNN model was shown to reduce reverberation components with proper training. A real-time implementation of the deep learning model is also discussed

    Sleep Stage Classification: A Deep Learning Approach

    Sleep occupies significant part of human life. The diagnoses of sleep related disorders are of great importance. To record specific physical and electrical activities of the brain and body, a multi-parameter test, called polysomnography (PSG), is normally used. The visual process of sleep stage classification is time consuming, subjective and costly. To improve the accuracy and efficiency of the sleep stage classification, automatic classification algorithms were developed. In this research work, we focused on pre-processing (filtering boundaries and de-noising algorithms) and classification steps of automatic sleep stage classification. The main motivation for this work was to develop a pre-processing and classification framework to clean the input EEG signal without manipulating the original data thus enhancing the learning stage of deep learning classifiers. For pre-processing EEG signals, a lossless adaptive artefact removal method was proposed. Rather than other works that used artificial noise, we used real EEG data contaminated with EOG and EMG for evaluating the proposed method. The proposed adaptive algorithm led to a significant enhancement in the overall classification accuracy. In the classification area, we evaluated the performance of the most common sleep stage classifiers using a comprehensive set of features extracted from PSG signals. Considering the challenges and limitations of conventional methods, we proposed two deep learning-based methods for classification of sleep stages based on Stacked Sparse AutoEncoder (SSAE) and Convolutional Neural Network (CNN). The proposed methods performed more efficiently by eliminating the need for conventional feature selection and feature extraction steps respectively. Moreover, although our systems were trained with lower number of samples compared to the similar studies, they were able to achieve state of art accuracy and higher overall sensitivity

    Review of Cetacean's click detection algorithms

    The detection of echolocation clicks is key in understanding the intricate behaviors of cetaceans and monitoring their populations. Cetacean species relying on clicks for navigation, foraging and even communications are sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) and a variety of dolphin groups. Echolocation clicks are wideband signals of short duration that are often emitted in sequences of varying inter-click-intervals. While datasets and models for clicks exist, the detection and classification of clicks present a significant challenge, mostly due to the diversity of clicks' structures, overlapping signals from simultaneously emitting animals, and the abundance of noise transients from, for example, snapping shrimps and shipping cavitation noise. This paper provides a survey of the many detection and classification methodologies of clicks, ranging from 2002 to 2023. We divide the surveyed techniques into categories by their methodology. Specifically, feature analysis (e.g., phase, ICI and duration), frequency content, energy based detection, supervised and unsupervised machine learning, template matching and adaptive detection approaches. Also surveyed are open access platforms for click detections, and databases openly available for testing. Details of the method applied for each paper are given along with advantages and limitations, and for each category we analyze the remaining challenges. The paper also includes a performance comparison for several schemes over a shared database. Finally, we provide tables summarizing the existing detection schemes in terms of challenges address, methods, detection and classification tools applied, features used and applications.Comment: 23 pages, 6 tables, 4 figure

    A virtual hand assessment system for efficient outcome measures of hand rehabilitation

    Previously held under moratorium from 1st December 2016 until 1st December 2021.Hand rehabilitation is an extremely complex and critical process in the medical rehabilitation field. This is mainly due to the high articulation of the hand functionality. Recent research has focused on employing new technologies, such as robotics and system control, in order to improve the precision and efficiency of the standard clinical methods used in hand rehabilitation. However, the designs of these devices were either oriented toward a particular hand injury or heavily dependent on subjective assessment techniques to evaluate the progress. These limitations reduce the efficiency of the hand rehabilitation devices by providing less effective results for restoring the lost functionalities of the dysfunctional hands. In this project, a novel technological solution and efficient hand assessment system is produced that can objectively measure the restoration outcome and, dynamically, evaluate its performance. The proposed system uses a data glove sensorial device to measure the multiple ranges of motion for the hand joints, and a Virtual Reality system to return an illustrative and safe visual assistance environment that can self-adjust with the subject’s performance. The system application implements an original finger performance measurement method for analysing the various hand functionalities. This is achieved by extracting the multiple features of the hand digits’ motions; such as speed, consistency of finger movements and stability during the hold positions. Furthermore, an advanced data glove calibration method was developed and implemented in order to accurately manipulate the virtual hand model and calculate the hand kinematic movements in compliance with the biomechanical structure of the hand. The experimental studies were performed on a controlled group of 10 healthy subjects (25 to 42 years age). The results showed intra-subject reliability between the trials (average of crosscorrelation ρ = 0.7), inter-subject repeatability across the subject’s performance (p > 0.01 for the session with real objects and with few departures in some of the virtual reality sessions). In addition, the finger performance values were found to be very efficient in detecting the multiple elements of the fingers’ performance including the load effect on the forearm. Moreover, the electromyography measurements, in the virtual reality sessions, showed high sensitivity in detecting the tremor effect (the mean power frequency difference on the right Vextensor digitorum muscle is 176 Hz). Also, the finger performance values for the virtual reality sessions have the same average distance as the real life sessions (RSQ =0.07). The system, besides offering an efficient and quantitative evaluation of hand performance, it was proven compatible with different hand rehabilitation techniques where it can outline the primarily affected parts in the hand dysfunction. It also can be easily adjusted to comply with the subject’s specifications and clinical hand assessment procedures to autonomously detect the classification task events and analyse them with high reliability.     Decoding Neural Signals with Computational Models: A Systematic Review of Invasive BMI

    There are significant milestones in modern human's civilization in which mankind stepped into a different level of life with a new spectrum of possibilities and comfort. From fire-lighting technology and wheeled wagons to writing, electricity and the Internet, each one changed our lives dramatically. In this paper, we take a deep look into the invasive Brain Machine Interface (BMI), an ambitious and cutting-edge technology which has the potential to be another important milestone in human civilization. Not only beneficial for patients with severe medical conditions, the invasive BMI technology can significantly impact different technologies and almost every aspect of human's life. We review the biological and engineering concepts that underpin the implementation of BMI applications. There are various essential techniques that are necessary for making invasive BMI applications a reality. We review these through providing an analysis of (i) possible applications of invasive BMI technology, (ii) the methods and devices for detecting and decoding brain signals, as well as (iii) possible options for stimulating signals into human's brain.
