Recognizing problems in shipboard logging meteorology systems

    Get PDF
This report is to assist shipboard technicians whose responsibilities are maintaining digital logging meteorological systems. Examples of good and bad data recorded on ships by IMET (Improved METeorology) systems are given, as well as general comments on how various parameters should appear when plotted against time. Parameters included are: wind speed and direction, air temperature, relative humidity, barometric pressure, short- and long-wave radiation, and precipitation (R. M. Young gauges).Funding provided by the National Science Foundation under Grant No. OCE-9806381

Human-computer interaction for development (HCI4D):the Southern African landscape

    Get PDF
Human-Computer interaction for development (HCI4D) research aims to maximise the usability of interfaces for interacting with technologies designed specifically for under-served, under-resourced, and under-represented populations. In this paper we provide a snapshot of the Southern African HCI4D research against the background of the global HCI4D research landscape. We commenced with a systematic literature review of HCI4D (2010-2017) then surveyed Southern African researchers working in the area. The contribution is to highlight the context- specific themes and challenges that emerged from our investigation

Semantics-based selection of everyday concepts in visual lifelogging

Concept-based indexing, based on identifying various semantic concepts appearing in multimedia, is an attractive option for multimedia retrieval and much research tries to bridge the semantic gap between the media’s low-level features and high-level semantics. Research into concept-based multimedia retrieval has generally focused on detecting concepts from high quality media such as broadcast TV or movies, but it is not well addressed in other domains like lifelogging where the original data is captured with poorer quality. We argue that in noisy domains such as lifelogging, the management of data needs to include semantic reasoning in order to deduce a set of concepts to represent lifelog content for applications like searching, browsing or summarisation. Using semantic concepts to manage lifelog data relies on the fusion of automatically-detected concepts to provide a better understanding of the lifelog data. In this paper, we investigate the selection of semantic concepts for lifelogging which includes reasoning on semantic networks using a density-based approach. In a series of experiments we compare different semantic reasoning approaches and the experimental evaluations we report on lifelog data show the efficacy of our approach

The Device for Communication in the Tool for Measurement in Boreholes

    Get PDF
In this paper an implementation and test of the device for communication between Telemetry system and Surface unit with the tool for measurement of pipe diameter, fluid velocity and direction of flow in the borehole (Calliper-Fullbore Flowmeter - CFF) are presented. This communication is done according to SIPLOS (Simultaneous Production Logging String) protocol and it is used by Hotwell company [1] as a part of a larger system for borehole investigations

The Development of an Inexpensive Alternative to Industry Solar Simulators

    Get PDF
Solar cells are a prominent renewable energy source used in the twenty-first century. In order for the technology to grow, research lab equipment is needed to measure and characterizes these cells. This report covers solar simulator devices and proposes an alternative design solution to lessen the cost of solar cell lab equipment. Common household light sources were tested by generating I-V characteristics using an amorphous silicon solar cell. The light bulb that generated the best I-V curve was selected and then tested for the optimal distance between the light source and the solar panel. The alternative solar simulator was then tested at the optimal distance by the generation of I-V characteristics and light spectrum. These results will be compared to an industry-standard solar simulator: the Newport LED Solar Simulator LSH-7320. The experiment conducted in this report and its findings’ intentions are to motivate more research in designing low-cost solar simulators with the hopes of allowing developing countries to start utilizing solar cell technology
