    Prepare for Citizen Science Challenges at CERN

    Abstract: To inspire more people to contribute to science, and educate the public about science, two Citizen Science "challenges" were prepared during summer 2013: the CERN Summer Webfest 2013 and the Virtual LHC Challenge. The first part of this report summarizes how to organize a Webfest at CERN and the outcome of the CERN Summer Webfest 2013.The second part gives an introduction to the current state of the Virtual LHC Challenge: a development of the LHC@Home Test4Theory project planned to attract many unskilled volunteers.     Digitized Engineering Notebook is a web based application of the Engineering Notebook that can be used by an individual or team which can track and record all the activities during specific design process. This application can create a new project or select an existing project, add team members to the project, it also enables team members to access the portal at the same time there to synchronize their work. The substantial applicability of this portal is creation of dated log entries for ideas, details, and observations, chronological listing of log entries and enabling uploads of text documents, diagrams, sketches, figures, etc. By designing the digitized engineering notebook in a user-friendly way, we can save lot of time for an individual or team by enabling to access and navigate from anywhere using their own devices

    Examining Teachers\u27 and College Students\u27 Perspectives Toward E-textbooks as an Educational Tool

    The purpose of this research was to understand the perspectives of teachers and students regarding their use of specific e-textbooks in a higher education learning environment. The e-textbooks used by the teachers and students were examined in order to determine functions and features to focus on during the inquiry. This study was particularly interested in the design of e-textbooks and how they are used by both teachers and students in the learning process. The participants in the research were also prompted to suggest improvements to e-textbooks. A case study approach was used as the methodology to examine three teachers represented three majors in three different colleges and a small sample of their students to gather information to answer the research questions. Qualitative data from multiple sources such as in depth interviews and document reviews were used to analyze and examine the overall utility of e-textbooks toward learning/teaching, and functions related to the instructional and navigational design of e-textbooks. Results of this study showed that there was overall agreement that choosing books needs to be based on the quality of the material contained within the book, regardless of the format, print or electronic. E-textbooks facilitate teachers’ and students’ interactions and access to the materials and resources. However, both teachers and students viewed their e-textbooks as supplementary materials, even thought these e-textbooks allowed them to interact with the text using different tools. One recurring finding was how flexible e-textbooks are in individualizing student learning. Recommendations by students/teachers included the improvement of page layout, the interface, increasing window size, providing more complex tasks, keeping up with technology, and insuring the quality of information within the e-textbook. Implications for future research include further investigation into the use of e-textbooks as supplementary materials, and whether printed texts are also being considered as supplementary. Finally, there are indications that advanced technology may be changing how students learn and if e-textbooks reflect this change. Further research into this possible change in ways that students learn would shed additional light on this question

    From Lagrangians to Events: Computer Tutorial at the MC4BSM-2012 Workshop

    This is a written account of the computer tutorial offered at the Sixth MC4BSM workshop at Cornell University, March 22-24, 2012. The tools covered during the tutorial include: FeynRules, LanHEP, MadGraph, CalcHEP, Pythia 8, Herwig++, and Sherpa. In the tutorial, we specify a simple extension of the Standard Model, at the level of a Lagrangian. The software tools are then used to automatically generate a set of Feynman rules, compute the invariant matrix element for a sample process, and generate both parton-level and fully hadronized/showered Monte Carlo event samples. The tutorial is designed to be self-paced, and detailed instructions for all steps are included in this write-up.     Widening Access for Education: Proposing a Conceptual Model for Integrated Open and Distance Learning (ODL) on Demand

    The education world has seen a dramatic change in the mode of learning and teaching. Attention has been drawn to open and distance learning (ODL) as one method of educational instruction using advanced information and communication technology (ICT) as the enabler. ODL has become the means by which education can be accessed by all who so require, anywhere, anytime. Thus, ODL itself must be able to meet the “demands” of its stakeholders including learners and facilitators. There has to be in place a system that can support instant delivery of learning and guiding materials to learners and enables facilitators to guide and assess their learners both synchronously and asynchronously. Such a system should be holistic and dynamic in a way that it can cater ‘on demand’ any requests from the stakeholders. This paper proposes a conceptual model for integrated ODL on demand which can be utilised for the teaching and learning of a range of courses. The proposed model’s delivery mode would be based upon learning through visualisation, interaction, collaboration, exploration and a host of possible alternatives that can be replicated for any course carried out by ODL institutions including Open University Malaysia (OUM).     Adaptive Visualization for Focused Personalized Information Retrieval

    The new trend on the Web has totally changed todays information access environment. The traditional information overload problem has evolved into the qualitative level beyond the quantitative growth. The mode of producing and consuming information is changing and we need a new paradigm for accessing information.Personalized search is one of the most promising answers to this problem. However, it still follows the old interaction model and representation method of classic information retrieval approaches. This limitation can harm the potential of personalized search, with which users are intended to interact with the system, learn and investigate the problem, and collaborate with the system to reach the final goal.This dissertation proposes to incorporate interactive visualization into personalized search in order to overcome the limitation. By combining the personalized search and the interac- tive visualization, we expect our approach will be able to help users to better explore the information space and locate relevant information more efficiently.We extended a well-known visualization framework called VIBE (Visual Information Browsing Environment) and implemented Adaptive VIBE, so that it can fit into the per- sonalized searching environment. We tested the effectiveness of this adaptive visualization method and investigated its strengths and weaknesses by conducting a full-scale user study.We also tried to enrich the user models with named-entities considering the possibility that the traditional keyword-based user models could harm the effectiveness of the system in the context of interactive information retrieval.The results of the user study showed that the Adaptive VIBE could improve the precision of the personalized search system and could help the users to find out more diverse set of information. The named-entity based user model integrated into Adaptive VIBE showed improvements of precision of user annotations while maintaining the level of diverse discovery of information
